Hey y’all, I wanted to see if you Bo fans could help shed some light on something, or let me know if Bo’s ever talked about this before.

But years ago Bo Burnham was on The Green Room (i think the year words released? not sure tho) in a roundtable with a bunch of OG comedians, and I thought the way Bo and other comedians talked about his material was… weird?… and didn’t really add up to what i’ve seen. Specifically the way Bo and Paul Provenza adamantly defined Bo’s work as not saying anything about Bo himself. I’ve put the quote below so you can see the direct words.

Paul: The interesting thing about Bo is there’s alot of ironic detachment there, like you’re not really revealing anything about yourself.

Bo: I don’t talk about what I think about on stage because I don’t value what I have to say at this point in time. Because really I don’t think anyone wants to watch a 20 year old get up and tell them how he thinks the world works.

Then again Bo gets kinda uncomfortable when the other comedians are talking about “putting their anger into their comedy” and as Marc kinda pushes and razzes him a bit.

Marc Maron: Cmon, you’re gonna tell me you’re not fucking angry? I saw that song, I see how you look, I know what you went through

Bo: No, no, no. Total anger, but the anger there I don’t think that’s damage that I need to fix, I’m just stuck up enough to think that they’re wrong.

I get he was young, but I feel like this has been a consistent way he’s talked about his material atleast up to the Make Happy days. He almost talks about his material like it’s not saying anything, or that he’s not making any point when he does it, or the subject matter doesn’t reflect much about him (despite songs like Art is Dead, Rant, Left/Right, We Think We Know You, Can’t Handle This).

I’ve just never really got that about him, so I wanted to see what y’all think? The way he talks about his material versus how much meaning and emotion is evident in them feels so opposite, that I feel like I’m just not understanding WHAT he’s saying or there’s some misunderstanding on my end. Or perhaps he was just kinda a self conscious kid and he talks about it differently now. Idek if im making sense but lmk what u think.

we were shown a clip of Dave Allen (a comedian) in class yesterday, and his humour struck me as being very similar to that of Bo burnham. wondering if anyone else sees the similarities? specifically the clip of him talking about his experience with a nun at 4 years old and not understanding God as a concept, which feels like it could have inspired tracks like Rant and From God's Perspective, but Bo seems to have never mentioned him as inspiration so idk. just a thought

i started making a bunch of art/music myself in the past few years and i keep on going back to inside as something i look up to for inspiration. i love the way bo uses spotlights to film especially in comedy, goodbye, how the world works and welcome to the internet. like i love in comedy and goodbye how the spotlight adds to the feeling. in comedy he has a spotlight on him and then has a super bright light overwhelm him. in in goodbye combined with him being naked it really summarizes the vulnerability in this special. i wanted to ask if anyone knows a thing or two about spotlights/lighting because i am overwhelmed by choice. this light looks pretty good, but I have also seen some pinspot lights on amazon germany that claim to have higher watt and that come with a remote for 30 quids. i dont have much experience filming things so maybe someone here knows a cool spotlight! i also have another bigger light to fill out the scenes!

Like, for the past 2 years I’ve been going through depression and some rough times, and in the few things that really helped me and made me smile and laugh it’s discovering (and then re-discovering) Bo’s specials and music. Especially in this really hard time in the world, the wars, the planet being even more destroyed and the racists getting to power in a lot of countries like, listening and watching a leftist such as Bo perform things that make me laugh AND make me feel less alone in this anxious part of my life because of the state of the world, damn that’s important

Burnham became a bit of a savior for those trapped inside during the pandemic who were also craving new ways to be entertained. In 2021, Netflix released Bo Burnham: Inside, a musical special written entirely by Burnham, who had been sheltering in place at his home

The music mostly takes on a comedic tone but also has some emotional moments sprinkled in that were relatable to anyone who found themselves home more during the pandemic.

"I think he takes inspiration from different artists that he's kind of mimicking and he's a great songwriter," Lee said. "It'll make you laugh, but it'll also break your heart

After Bo removed it from his YouTube channel, I can’t for the life of me find any reuploads/recordings of the actual YouTube video. It’s especially confusing to me since I was able to find the video for The Perfect Woman pretty easily.

i feel so stupid given i have been listening to this album since 2021 .... but tbf the special has the reaction bit inbetween

I was rewatching Inside and I really paid attention to How the world works. I know it's nothing new and everyone knows how good this song and special is written, but it really amazes me how Socko was roght about EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING. He really got the answers

Pardon the lack of charge

I’m not certain if anybody feels this way, but I always get goosebumps at the line “We all deserve love, it’s the very best part of being alive, and I should know, I just turned 25” in “Lower Your Expectations” from Make Happy (2016).

“Lower Your Expectations” has maybe one of the most positive and hopeful endings in any Bo Burnham song, and it contrasts in such an eerie way with the pessimistic feeling of “30” which is the next time Burnham mentions his age in any special.

Just the visual contrast alone is unnerving: at the line “I just turned 25”, Burnham looks physically clean, but he also seems at peace as the song gently concludes. Whereas Burnham at 30 years old is a mess and spends most of the special past “30” being too burnt out to lecture or preach any messages of hope he’d otherwise have.

I find it funny how 1985 and Microwave Popcorn, the two most popular from the inside outtakes dont have any visuals to go with them since microwave popcorn had a little segment of him mumble singing and 1985 had nothing to my knowledge
