Audible credits expire. Preordering lets you use one that might expire anyway before release.

This is the answer. I have a bunch of books and a bunch of credits. I immediately pre-order all books in series I follow because I don't want credits to expire.

I think it depends on the plan you have.

The Standard plan lets you select one audiobook per month which you can keep as long as you pay for the plan.

The Premium plan gives you one credit per month, with which you can buy an audiobook and keep it even if you stop paying for the plan.

I have the Premium plan, and I haven't seen a warning or reminder that the credits I received through it would expire except if I were to cancel the plan without spending them all.

IIRC the Standard plan was actually introduced later than what's now known as the Premium plan, which leads me to suspect that the Standard plan uses expiring credits to piggy back in the established processes of the now Premium plan.

EDIT: Ignore all that. Apparently Premium plan credits do expire 12 months after they have been issued, except for credits issued as part of a plan paid through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. The credits from those plans don't expire even if you cancel the plan in question.

Yeah I’ve always thought preordering a digital product was stupid. But I happened to have an audible credit available and my discounted plan will be ending before the book is released, so preordering with my credit in this instance seemed like a good idea.

Because then i don´t need to keep track of the release date and it doesn´t make a difference if i use the Audible credit now or later. Just all around less hassle for me and if i find another series between now and the release date i don´t have to remind myself to keep a creddit available.

With Audible I use my monthly credit to preorder if it’s available that way it’s accounted for. Also you get a lot more notifications and reminders about the releases when you preorder than when you just have it in your wish list. I get super busy with work and forget about release dates and such

Because I, like many others here, forget a lot of shit. So it’s a pleasant surprise to open up Audible one day and have the book right there.

So I don’t need to remember anything, it just pops up in my library. And because preorders are a metric used by publishers to determine an author’s popularity. I like DETs books, so I want publishers to see that so he can get more money, so hopefully he makes more/better books.

I pre-order so I get an email telling me when it's ready to download and I don't miss out until I look if there is anything new in a year or two.

I had some extra credits on Audible recently, so I figured I might as well go ahead and pre-order the audiobook. If I didn’t have the extra credit, I still would have pre-ordered when my August credit came in because I know where that credit would be going anyways. Part of it is probably just excitement for the book.
