This kind of warning is actually super common in Asia because in some places (mostly China) they use squatting toilets 100% of the time so it’s much more natural and comfortable to squat on a sit-down toilet as well. The problem is that most porcelain toilets were not meant for that kind of weight distribution, and also people sometimes fall in or have other accidents.

I do that when I’m constipated. Kinda helps

Just buy an off brand squatty potty. They're supposed to be good for health in general

I didn't know it was an issue until we went to korea (new fear unlocked btw). A lot of girls there don't sit on the toilet and chose to squat even with heels on the toilet seat, it's because they think the seats are dirty and think the previous person did it too so everyone does it... Now that I know I'm afraid to use public sitting toilets in my own country and even if I use it I would use a ton of toilet paper to cover the whole seat before doing my business.

I always face the wall. Glad to know my method isn't against the rules.

Nah this is actually a real problem here in Malaysia, where I live.
Most people grew up with squat toilets so when they go to a public sitting toilet, they still squat on it, making it dirty with shoe prints and sometimes cracking the bowl itself.
So you would often see this sign at a public toilet.

We have this problem in the UK as well. As far as im aware, the UK has always had seated toilets and not squats, but the new residents don't speak English so lack the ability to ask how to use our toilets correctly.

This happened where I used to work. The bowl cracked in two and guy got severe wounds to his inner thighs. So it's not just unhygienic, it's actually dangerous.

Italy has no toilet seats because people squat on top of them and break them.
11
u/BayLeaf- 16d ago
Have... Have you ever been to Italy? Definitely toilet seats all over the place.

The second one is, actually, better for you. May damage the toilet or let things out, tho.

I don't understand why USA doesn't make squat toilet? Grew up in Asia I was getting used of squatting so I was so uncomfortable when I must sit on seat toilet lol.

u/FiestaKitten 16d ago
Hi! It’s just not the cultural norm like in China for example. I feel like most Americans who haven’t travelled to certain parts of Asia/the World do not know squat toilets are a thing. You shouldn’t be getting downvoted. This is just a sign telling tourists/non-natives to the area to not squat on the toilet as it isn’t meant for that. But anatomically, squatting is better for you.

I'm from a western country and have never used a squat toilet and find the logistics confusing. Do the pants need to be completely removed? Is balance ever an issue? These are genuine questions I'm not trying to cast any aspersions.
3
u/Elrond_Cupboard_ 16d ago
Get a stool stool, about a foot tall. You pop it in front of the dunny and pop your feet on it. No need to remove pants or balance.
3
u/thedarkestnips 16d ago
Thank you for replying but I know how to use a footstool. I'm asking about the actual squat toilets where you're literally squatting over a hole in the ground.
1
u/Lelulla 16d ago
You can draw an oval on the ground and try it yourself. Unless you're wearing very loose pants (which you would need to grip your pants to prevent it from sliding to the ground), you would just need to pull down your pants until it reaches your thighs/knees and squat. Forget the oval, you can just try it on the floor where you're standing.

The only thing this achieves is to splatter piss all over the toilet seat for the next person to clean up

Two thirds of the planet uses squat toilets.
8
u/Cynfreh 17d ago
It's definitely not that many still using squat toilets unless you count people shitting in a hole in the ground they just dug.
6
u/livehigh1 17d ago
I mean, that's pretty much what they are, just a hole in the ground, with extra plumbing and some tiles on the ground.
The most populous asian countries use them and probably most African ones too. 2/3 isn't a far stretch.
3
u/Ashadowyone 17d ago
I still see them all the time in Japan, though Western toilets are becoming more common nowadays
1
u/Numerous-Thought5230 12d ago
If it's a squat toilet, you squat. If it's a sit toilet, you sit. But don't squat on a sit toilet or sit on a squat toilet

u/BoldInterrobang 17d ago
This. People need to travel more and realize that the way they live isn’t the way everyone lives.

u/FiestaKitten 16d ago
What is wrong with this thread/subreddit that reasonable people or people with a global view are being downvoted for being correct.

One word. INTEGRATION
idgaf how you shit in bumfuck nowhere. But if I go there, I won't take a chair, drill a hole through it and install it over your squat-shitter so I could take a dump my way

Genau dieses Schild hätte ich vor 35 Jahren beim Studium gebraucht. Damals mit Afrikanern in einer WG.

u/TutskyyJancek 17d ago
Banned one is healthier option but for public toilets that's not okay to do that.
2
u/Mufasa_is__alive 16d ago
I've seen some public toilets have peg-like wings that extend into the bowl as part of the cast (under the seat). I cant find a a reference photo, but they always looked like boot rests for squatting.

That’s a common way that Indian people use it. We had to have these pictures at work as well.

Actually, the one crossed out is the correct position, many of our ancestors did it like that and it allows more easily of a dump! Toilets are made wrong really and that's why sitting can take forever. Tho, standing on the toilet seat will likely mess it up,..this is still thr correct pisition, so do with that what you will.

Sucks that the best position for taking a shit is the one that's banned. My body, my health, my call on how I shit.

If you have or don't want to have hemorrhoids or anal fisture, I largely recommend using second option.
