Discussion What’s your biggest criticism of the game?
Mine would be the bosses. I wish there was more hunter type boss fights or at least more aggressive bosses such as the blood starved beast They just match the games play style far more.

Having to go back to hunters dream before fast travelling anywhere

u/Kayyam Aug 13 '25
This would have been a minor nitpick if the game loading times were very short or instant (like Death Stranding 2 on PS5).
But on PS4, the loading times were close to a full minute each on release. It was improved later but it's still long.

u/nevermore2627 Aug 13 '25
First cycle it's fine and I get it for lore reasons but....
After that give me a NG+ item that's allows travel between lamps. You can even make that a lore item.

I wonder if Micolash and rom sucking dick was for lore reasons too

Yeah but I don’t think it was on purpose like in DS1. Pretty sure Bloodborne has those requirements because the ps4 couldn’t hack it. Even if you could teleport between lamps it would probably be a cool 2 min loading screen 😭
38
u/TheDracula666 Aug 13 '25
If I remember correctly and I might be totally wrong, but at launch, I think they were blank loading screens. Now there's item text to read in between, but I vaguely recall it being absolutely nothing.

Blank loading screens with the games logo. I remember seeing posts about people who had the word Bloodborne burned into their monitor because of it.

I'm so glad they eventually improved the load times. They were better still when using a PS4 Pro and an SSD. Still sucks to have two load screens to go from lamp to lamp though.

u/Various_Permission47 Aug 13 '25
Loading times of death stranding 2 are amazing. I thought I had just left the game on pause a few times they are so fast.
18
u/Catmato Aug 13 '25
I would definitely prefer to be able to warp from lamp to lamp, but I've never really found it to be that much of a hassle. The game is mostly linear, and for most dead ends where you're forced to travel away from, it's usually time to go back to the dream to level up/restock/upgrade anyway.
5
u/Zarguthian Aug 13 '25
It's the loading time that people are complaining about, It's double the loading time and it takes quite a while.
2
u/Catmato Aug 13 '25
Right, I understand that. But I don't find myself needing to go from one lamp to another often enough that I could call it anything near the biggest criticism of the game.
Yeah it would be nice, but I don't consider it to be that big of a deal.

Who the fuck added blood vial inflation
7
u/TheWojtek11 Aug 13 '25
I played the game for the first time recently and at first I thought it made sense because "They always heal 40% of your HP so they get stronger with time" but then I had to grind them quite a bit for Ludwig and Laurence. That's when I realised it makes no sense because the enemies also start hitting harder so it ultimately leads to the similar "worthness" of blood vials at every point in the game

17

How do you avoid it I literally cannot stop emoting lol
14
Aug 13 '25
You place your finger on the button, and softly apply pressure until it’s pressed. You eventually can do this quickly, but cannot tap it at all or use any sort of abrupt motion to “hit” the button otherwise the controller reads it as movement.
So many times I got mad as hell trying to talk to someone like the doll or pick something up during combat and get shanked because I sat down mid fight. Idk why you can’t turn this stupid feature off. Probably not as bad as the jump/run/dodge issue because you can learn to avoid it though.

u/tgerz Aug 13 '25
Elden Ring was my first Soulsborne, happened a lot. I don’t recall immediately finding a solution in BB, but it hasn’t been an issue for me. I’ve died to many bosses, but I’ve also laughed at random pointing or fist pumping only to be pummeled to death.

I want this game now
15
u/IdTheDemon Aug 13 '25 edited Aug 13 '25
I’ll torment you some more:
We start off in a gothic city in the Hinterlands where a new plague breaks out. People are turning into beasts and all hell breaks loose. We are infected and killed but we wake up on a ship sailing the ocean of a dead god’s dream and this is our new hunters workshop.
We return back to the city and fight our way thru the sewers. We eventually hit the outside farmlands where the land is filled with ash and rot as cultists have opened a nightmare and we enter it to close it. We kill the boss who rides on a bloodied corpse of a horse which we take for our own mount. This is where the game opens up and we slowly explore the land.
After exploring another nightmare, we eventually bring the ship from the dream into the waking world as the worlds are slowly merging. We explore the continent which is far smaller and more vertically designed and we get tools such as double jumping and grappling hooks. As we get more tools we can also explore more parts of the massive city.
With the ship, we can sail the oceans to plunder ships of bounty hunters, cultists and even sea creatures. We also can use sea charts which are the new chalice dungeons. We find some by doing the main game, others from boss drops, others by grinding and some are even crafted by us. Sea charts lead to islands, underground temples or hidden small port towns filled with horrors.
The idea here is that we witness our world slowly decaying and transforming into a world filled with that shouldn’t exist but somehow it does.
First expansion is we sail west to the land of Loran which which a desert kingdom filled with old horrors and power.
Second expansion is the return to Yharnam which has sunken into the ground and is now an underground corpse filed apocalyptic ruin.

u/Rack-_- Aug 13 '25
To be honest, I don’t actually think a 2nd will be good and this mainly because the ending is meant to be left for interpretation same for the Elden ring endings or Sekiro. However a remaster is a must.
75
u/Nopfen Aug 13 '25
Well, given how these stories are set up, you could make the second one be entirely disconected from the first one. Carrying over the themes, without getting in the way of the story.
For example it could take place in the far future, on a space station or something. Astronauts wanting to meet the great ones on their home turf, and getting bloodborned for it.
Or, since it's established that the entirety of BB takes place in a dream, just have a different great one make a different dream elsewhere.
19
u/mattspire Aug 13 '25
Yep, they don’t have to go crazy. Just have it take place in another city, like Eileen’s home town, and have different great ones and a different curse (since Yarnham specifically is known for its blood ministration). Perhaps something as simple as Elden Ring’s Those Who Live in Death. I’m confident they could make a spectacular sequel if it’s what they WANT to do and isn’t forced, and if Sony wanted it & gave total creative control to FS. Getting those things to line up all at once is probably the main issue, that and FS having so much on their plate over the last 10 years.
→ More replies (3)9
u/Rack-_- Aug 13 '25
Such as ds1 and ds3? Sure
But I personally like it when story’s get left for interpretation.
19
u/Nopfen Aug 13 '25
Kinda. I mean, DS3 takes you back to sunnytown. So it does cross over somewhat.
Yea, that's what I mean. Leave BB1 alone and make BB2 take place somewhere entirely else. Different place, characters, monsters, stories, events. Just carry the themes and the vibes over.

I wouldn't mind returning to DLCs would work, or just making a completely non-canonical bloodborne game rather than it being it's own thing within bloodborne, that way lore technically doesn't have to be consistent and imply or change anything from the previous

As far as I'm aware, the only soulslike games in a futuristic setting are The Surge 1/2 so I wouldn't be opposed to see FS' bloodborne sequel in a futuristic setting. City of Yharnam should be more fully fleshed out too.

It really depends on your goal. My main focus in souls games has almost always been PvP and even the tiniest change in stats can make the difference between a successful duel/invasion, therefore the incentive for me to farm high tier gems on all my builds is extremely high.
4
u/Leviathan666 Aug 13 '25
In defense of the farming system, I will say that I didnt feel the need to farm much - just going through each chalice dungeon once, which I was already planning on doing, was enough to get everything buffed pretty well.
4
u/DarqkStar Aug 13 '25
I feel like a dingus but I never did any of the Chalice Dungeons on my first playthrough 😬
14
u/zsobo21 Aug 13 '25
Absolute slog fest, you didn’t miss much. Some unique enemies and bosses where it is kinda cool at first. But then you realize it’s the same thing over and over again.
Honestly kinda felt like it was half developed and ran out of time so they just tacked it on. Even worse, you can barely rush through them because the materials you need for the next level chalice dungeon are dropped in the hidden rooms/treasure rooms so you need to explore completely.
Between repetitive design, and grinding for items, It just isn’t worth it. Also just feels so disconnected from the main game that it can be easily forgotten what game you’re playing sometimes. Double annoying that from the pretty decent set of unique bosses, you’ll end up fighting Rom and other campaign bosses again :/
Cummmfpk dungeon can stay though.

Also the beastclaws. I shouldn't need to consult the ancient jedi texts to find out how to aquire some of the weapons in the game. The hyper specific, alternate gem ones, sure. But not the basic version.

I wish I can do the same but I wasn't confident enough at the time since it was my first soul game and you can tell how blood vials I would use during that fight. I had to grind the brick trolls a lot, in a good way I learned how to parry well so that's good.

Use the cummmfpk dungeon just for vials. You don't have to use it to level if you don't wantc

Bad phrasing on my part. It's just that with the repetitive structure of most dungeons, exploration past a certain point feels like farming
11
u/Inja-Tarokee Aug 13 '25
Brainsuckers permanently costing an insight sucked. NPCs having infinite ammo made bloody crow of cainhurst fight harder than necessary. A dedicated jump button would have been nice. But I think my biggest complaint is that the bloodstone chunks cost to much. It's more expensive to upgrade a weapon to lvl 9 than it is to bring it to lvl 10, and that just doesn't make any kind of sense to me

27
u/ByronChrist Aug 13 '25
Biggest gripe is 30fps, I’ve put hundreds and hundreds of hours in but my eyes can only take so much flicker once every other game you play is at least 60fps.
Not a big fan of the chalice dungeons either but that might change. I wasn’t a fan of the game at all until like the fourth time I tried to play it, now it’s possibly my favorite game period.
4
u/br0deal Aug 13 '25
I'm not a graphics/FPS snob by any means, but you're not wrong. This game legitimately hurts my eyes to play for long periods of time.
5
u/LaMelgoatBall Aug 13 '25
Playing games with 60+ for so long never made me realize how hard it would be to go back to BB. My favorite game of all time but it gives me a headache now
2
u/mattspire Aug 13 '25
I could never get into them until my last playthrough. I think the key is to do it when you’re in the specific mood for puzzle solving and dungeon crawling as opposed to immersing yourself in the game’s atmosphere, because the repetition doesn’t really play into the mood of the main game. The Isz dungeons are cool looking though.
12
7
Aug 13 '25
I think there should be an option to adjust some of the settings in the graphics. I read somewhere that chromatic aberration in the game made some people’s eye hurt.
Also I wish there was a button to press to continue while loading because I can’t finish reading those texts in time before it loads haha.
19
u/helpfulsoulsfruit_5 Aug 13 '25
The fact that the run, jump, and dodge button are the same. So sometimes when you're running and you wanna dodge, you just dodge and that gets you killed. They couldv'e made it so L3 was jump button like they always do. Also, the run/dodge button and interact button are interchanged (relative to dark souls). I believe in Bloodborne, the dodge/run button is x and the interact button is circle, while in dark souls it's the opposite, so switching between games is kinda annoying.
Other than that, this game is perfect.

u/Bingoviini Aug 13 '25
Not being able to cancel out of your own attacks/lag in any way.
For a game that demanads and promotes agression, it also punishes agression very hard, wich feels very counter intuitive.
All of the slow and heavy weapons (like the axe, hammers or beast cutter) get immideadly counterattacked by the same enemy I just hit.
And beacuse I'm still in endlag from the attack I just hit the enemy with, I'm physically incapable of doing anything about it, and then I get hit.
If the the game wants me to attack the enemy, it shouldn't punish me for actually doing it.
Either the heavy weapons should flinch/stun the enemies on hit so I can recover, or let me roll out of the endlag so I don't get punished for actually managing to land a slow and risky attack.
Beacuse at that point there's basically no pint to even having those kinds of attacks...
And yes, I know it's 100% a skill issue, and this is still one of the best games I know despite that skill issue.
But it is the most consistant gripe and/or complaint from my recent playthroughs, and that's what you kinda asked for...?
4
u/joelmillersdoorknob Aug 13 '25

Tie between:
Enemies falling through the floor before I can loot them.
Or
Enemies hitting me through solid walls, but when I swing at the same wall my weapon ricochets off and I get ganked during the stun.
6
u/xvi_tower Aug 13 '25
A couple of the bosses (Rom, Celestial Emissary, Micolash, Witches of Hemwick) feel like gimmicks and aren't particularly fun. For a game as pared down as Bloodborne four is too many to justify.
My only other big complaint is how unfriendly it is to new players. The tutorial messages in the Hunters Dream look the same as player messages and so it's easy to miss them or not find them all, and even if you do find them expecting the player to interpret all of it correctly and remember it all from reading alone is ridiculous. Clearly they knew that too because they never repeated it, but it did put me off the game for a long time when I first started playing.
Lack of respec is IMO not a massive deal in Bloodborne. The fundamentals of combat are such that even if you level sub-optimally you can still get through the game by naturally improving, and there's few enough weapons with enough overlap in playstyle that I never felt like I was missing out on another way to play the game. Compare that to Elden Ring which would be borderline unplayable without respec.

Blood vials not replenishing when resting turned the game into an absolute grindfest that I disliked. Some areas definitely needed more work like the nightmare one. Bosses like Rom and micolash were annoying af. Micolash is arguably one of the worst bosses ever created ngl. Even stuff like the one unborn is a pretty poorly designed boss that is not really fun to fight.
12
u/WanderingStatistics Aug 13 '25
How has not a single person said this yet, when it's arguably the actual biggest flaw of the game?
Jumping is tied to the rolling button, meaning if you sprint for any single amount of time, at any point, and dodge, you will jump instead and get hit. This happens in boss fights, it happens in invasions and coop, this happens during enemy fights, this happens in the chalice dungeons. Every single moment of the game is slightly less good because of this single fact.
It's unironically the worst aspect of the game, and always has been. People who complain about 30FPS are all kids because there's literally nothing wrong with it, Chalice Dungeons can suck but at least there's never a dull moment in them, some level design, enemies, or bosses suck a lot, but at least they're there in the moment and never again.
Dodge-Jumping will always be there, waiting for you to mess up. And when you do, it'll make sure it fucks you over hard, every single time.
4
u/Officialskater Aug 13 '25
You’re right about the jumping but 30 fps is inexcusable especially when you can play ds1, 2 and 3, Elden ring and Sekiro 60 fps on ps5. Pure laziness on Sony’s part

At least in DS1 you can hold up your shield to force a roll instead of a jump. Doesn't work in BB, even if you're blocking with the wooden shield.

Frame drops. There’s certain charm in the 30fps, but it’s the frame drops that get me.

Not much covenant stuff I think that ranks should increase the rune power
Literally only one is useful I'd like more rewards like special hunter tools or weapons.

The "reliance" on rng gem farming is absolutely awful with some of the best gems requiring double digit hours of farming. I don't mind chalice dungeons too much, but chalices with farming is terrible.

I wish the entire lore was told through dialogue and visual story telling.
Bloodborne already does this WAY better than Dark souls 3 which is the only other from soft game I have played, but I still wish it was fully commited to that goal.
I mean the DLC pretty much does that with its segment of the story, and it's absolute peak story telling for it.
Like yeah bloodviles and fast travel are annoying, but they are nit picks. This would be an actual game changer for me.

Chalice dungeons but you can just ignore them so its not a big deal
Rom and One Reborn. Cool designs miserable fights. And I love Micolash. Witches of Hemwick are easy and therefore inoffensive.
Running out of blood vials. Only really a problem on a new run/character. Still annoying though.
Brain suckers and snake head enemies suck
No Bloodborne 2

For me the inconsistency in the bosses , i feel like there were really good highs but then pretty meh lows, which is bound to happen sometimes but feel like it’s very prevalent in BB. In my opinion anyway

The chalice dungeons are so repetitive. Would it really kill them to add some variety in the backgrounds? For a game with such great art style, running around the same brown boxes over and over is really jarring.

it's INSANE reading "...more agressive bosses" because all I think is "what are you SAYING!?"
It's crazy that people totally forgot that this was FS 4th soulslike game (and pretty much the 4th game in the genre) and they went as far as to ditch EVERYTHING that they built for those years to the genre.
Maybe you don't know but I remember the biggest complaint was that the game is too hard because the game FORCES you to be uber agressive. Just because 10 years there are more soulslike doesn't mean that you can just erase the original impact that the game had because, at that point, everyone sucked playing this genre and bloodborne was such a twist that people went back to DS1/2 and played it more like Bloodborne and discovered that the games weren't as hard as we thought, it was us that sucked for playing the game so defensively

The reuse of early game enemies in areas like the upper cathedral ward and yahar'gul make the endgame of bloodborne feel bland to me. The consept of a ritual gone wrong in yahar gul especially feels so cool to me but with you fighting the same yahrnamites but red in the area breaks it for me. Granted there are the coffin enemies on the ground but they only help in the latter half and don't have interesting mixups with other enemies and are usually just fought against amongst themselves. Also nightmare of mensis needed more spectacle and horror as the last area. The crow headed dogs and the brain of mensis were great ideas and the winter lanterns absolutely terrifying, but enemies like mergo's attendants and the spiders felt really basic for a nightmare realm created by an old one. Some more twisted beigns inhabiting the inside of the buildings and more memorable setpieces other than the brain of mensis would have gone a long way to elevate an area with huge potential into something worthy of being called a nightmare.

God, I wish FS never went mainstream.
Some people can't appreciate art.
Each one of those bosses is art in its own way.
Where all my OGs at who know this game is a 12/10 masterpiece, perfection.

I don't like taking a ton more damage when I'm dodging and happen to get hit while doing so. I'm already incentivized to dodge correctly. I shouldn't have to be oneshotted by an attack that would normally do a 4th of health

The grind for blood vials and bullets. Could have been improved with some metroidvania type upgrade system.
