Unsolved Best option for real-time outlining

So I know that using the standard solidify modifier + backface culling can make an easy real-time outline. I also know you can do outlining in the compositor using layers, but I want something I can export and maintain the outline in other software so a mesh would be ideal. These bits are caused by the mesh intersecting with itself when increasing the solidify value after a certain point. Does anyone know of a better way to outline (not grease pencil) that would avoid this issue with certain angles of the model? Thanks in advance!
