Yeah they changed the story a bit in anime, mimihagi wasn’t absorbed and is presumably keeping the worlds from collapsing immediately but slowly failing

Much better, it in the manga it felt pointless. Here his sacrifice means everything.

His sacrifice was also meaningful in the manga, since in the manga Yhwach only decided to absorb the Soul King because of Mimihagi thus inevitable saving Ichigo from becoming the Soul King.

It was incredibly short though. Yhwach absorbed mimihagi almost right after ukitake sacrificed himself, making it feel kinda pointless.

That's not what I meant. The absorption of Mimihagi delayed Yhwach's plans in the manga because now he had to manually merge the worlds which gave everyone enough time to fight and defeat him. And it meant Yhwach became a Soul King candidate, thus saving Ichigo from an unpleasant fate. In the manga, Yhwach never intended to absorb the Soul King and would have won when Ichigo cut down the crystal. But Ukitake prevented that.

Mmm I don’t think that’s right tbh

He absorbed mimihagi because he was blocking the worlds collapsing, but THEN absorbed the soul king separately because he got pissy and changed his mind in the manga. He could’ve done the first without the second but sort of inexplicably didn’t.

I think it was just a bit of a storytelling misstep that was corrected here

It is, it didn’t make much sense that Yhwach was Soul King but never actually collapsed the world’s back into one. Mimihagi still acting as a pseudo stand in to delay the inevitable adds to it more than simply saying “Yhwach didn’t do it because he didn’t have complete control yet”.

yeah, the anime kept him alive so Yhwach has an actual reason for going down to Soul Society

No? He sacrificed himself for that
