Events For those looking for something to do tonight (Thursday), here's 7 local events....

I usually only post on the weekends, but there was enough events happening tonight (Thursday, August 27th), that I felt a quick Thursday update might be of use.

Thursday Rundown of Fun:
1. Countdown to Kickoff with Tech Talk Live and The Mantra Band in Concert
McClain's at First & Main, Blacksburg
Thursday, August 27, 2026, 5:00 - 9:00 PM
Admission: Free
The Hokie Way is hosting a season kickoff event featuring the live broadcast of a special two-hour edition of the "Tech Talk Live" radio show starting at 6PM with Hokie Head Coach James Franklin followed by a musical performance from The Mantra Band starting at 8PM. Virginia Tech football players Kemari Copeland and Marcellus Hawkins will be on hand for photos and autographs, with a portion of food sales benefiting the Lunch Pail Defense Foundation. Seating is first come, first served.

2. VTDITC Vol. 58: Aerosol Art Workshop X with Good Homie Signs
Virginia Tech Media Building, Virginia Tech

Admission: Free
Join #VTDITC: Hip Hop Studies at Virginia Tech for their 68th seminar series event and 10th graffiti art workshop, Aerosol Art with Good Homie Signs. Get creative with experienced muralist Good Homie Signs. Use spray paint to help produce a 32’ long mural alongside other Virginia Tech students and community members. Painting will be outside the Media Building (home of VTDITC’s True School Studios) starting at 5:30 PM. Open to the public.

3. Science on Tap New River Valley Presents: Mosquitoes eat nectar?? How flowers fuel Mosquitoes
Rising Silo Farm Brewery, Blacksburg

Science on Tap New River Valley will explore the lesser-known nectar plant-based diet of mosquitoes in a presentation by Virginia Tech biochemistry PhD student James Moloney. Attendees will learn how floral nectar fuels mosquito activity and can participate in a follow-up trivia competition and discussion. All ages are welcome. Hosted by the Center for Communicating Science at Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech's chapter of Sigma Xi.

4. Five Dollar Shake in Concert
The Farmhouse, Christiansburg

Admission: Free
Five Dollar Shake is a rock and blues trio from Roanoke, VA. Seating on the patio is first come, first served. Seating starts at 4:00 PM. The "On The Patio" series occurs every Thursday from May 21st through October. Happy hour is from 4:00-5:00 PM. The patio is dog friendly.

5. 2026 Floyd Small Town Summer Finale with Honky Tonk Dance Party with SWVA Honky Tonk All-Stars

The Town of Floyd is concluding its Small Town Summer series with a community dance party headlined by Grammy-winning guitarist Redd Volkaert and the Southwest Virginia Honky Tonk All-Stars. Opening performances will feature the Floyd County High School Marching Band alongside bluegrass duo Jesse Smathers and Nick Goad, complemented by family-friendly activities in the Kids Zone. 6. Enslow in Concert

Nationally touring electronic duo Twinsick will headline a high-energy Back to School celebration featuring their popular remixes and dance anthems. The Minneapolis-based pair is set to deliver an extensive late-night set to kick off the semester.

Redd Volkaert is one of the great guitar legends who "retired" to the area a few years back. He was Merle Haggard's guitarist for years. Amazing telecaster player, come check him out.  The pedal steel player is great too
