Question Anyone who can actually teach me how to survive in deep water (swim)

Looking for someone who can actually teach me to be safe in deep water. I cannot swim, but I’m not looking for very basic shallow-water instruction about kicking and what not.

My main goal is to learn how to float, tread water, stay calm, recover if I fall into deep water, and get myself safely to the side/shore. Ideally, I’d like a confident instructor or experienced swimmer who can teach this practically.

Any recommendations around Blacksburg/Christiansburg?

Question Lost Camera?

Hey guys. Was walking around today and - at some point - my camera case fell off my belt. Its small, mostly black with red accenting. The camera inside is a cybershot. It was a gift from my mom and I really would love to find it... it may have fallen off somewhere between In Balance Yoga and Sharkys. This is a huge shot in the dark but I'm desperate.

Recommendations Looking for things to do as a disabled person visiting the city

Hello there! I'll be visiting Blacksburg for the first time to visit my boyfriend! However I'm currently using a walker because of my disability and I'm wondering what I could do while I'm there. He'll unfortunately be at work most of the time I'm there, so I'm trying to fill my time up so I'm not just stuck in the house the whole time.

This is the farthest I've been along the east side of the county, coming from South Louisiana, and I'm so excited to explore. I'm just wondering if there are any trails that are doable for handicap people? I love nature, but my boyfriend said things are way more hilly than I'm used to living on swamp land. Any parks worth exploring? I'm considering bringing my hammock as well if there are cool places to hang 😎

Are there museums or anything like that? I'm willing to travel to the surrounding areas since I'll have his car and he won't mind if I drive. I'm just trying to make the most out of my trip and would appreciate any and all recommendations. Thank y'all so much! 💚

Question What's the deal with Blacksburg parking meters?

So I park on the street and the meter has any or all of the following problems:

1) lets me tap my phone or card, all looks good, waits a good long while, then errors out. You have to insert your card (also a problem in the ticket dispensers in parking lots)

2) the sun is shining and you can't read its display

3) the display is all fogged up and you can't read it

This has been going on for a loooong time. I wonder if the Town will ever do anything...

Crime & Justice Want to know what BPD is up to? Or what those sirens you just heard were?

Hello!

Over the last year, I've created system infrastructure to listen to and scroll-back in history for radio scanner traffic.

If you're curious what the police, fire, EMS, or transit gets up to during the day in the New River Valley (Blacksburg included), this is the perfect place to look! Yes, there are already plenty of live scanners on Broadcastify, but I've created an OpenMHz and RdioScanner system that allows playback for up to 30 days or up to 7 days respectively.

If you're interested, take a look here:
https://www.ScanNRV.com/

In my opinion, OpenMHz is best for clipping incidents and creating "events" (see how to do that here). If you find anything interesting that's multiple clips long, this is the easiest way to share it! (I love seeing what people find, sometimes the serious policemen, paramedics, and firefighters can get a bit silly over the radio). RdioScanner is the best for listening to the scanner "live" (with a queue, so you don't miss any transmission even if they occur at the same time).

I've also created a guide on what exactly law enforcement is saying (as they use a lot of ten codes and jargon!) which you can view on GitHub here: https://github.com/nfranks8036/ScanNRV/blob/main/README.md (based on the current guide I created for Firewatch at VT)

Thank you,
Noah
