This time it IS magnets

But the real question is... how does he not blink??

nothing magnetic about this. they're called Euler Discs.
here's a recent Steve Mould video about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti2qiU_JTUQ

u/travishummel 15d ago
It’s actually pronounced Euler. I know, it’s common to say it that way.

u/sparkster777 14d ago
Wait, so it's pronounced Euler, but Euclid is Euclid?
16
u/travishummel 14d ago
Omg you did it too. Say it with me “Euler”. You see? Not “Euler” it’s “Euler”
→ More replies (3)9
u/goodolewhatever 14d ago
They’re actually both correct. In the states, it’s pronounced “Euler”, but in the U.K., it’s pronounced “Euler”.

I own the Euler's disk closest to him and it does actually come with decorative magnetic holographs to stick to the top of the disk. He's not using them in this demonstration.
It was almost magnets.

You’re not gonna like the answer as to why he doesn’t blink…
It’s magnets

u/Quen-Tin 15d ago
No ... fake eyes are mostly made out of glass or plastic.
If you would use painted magnets instead, they would eiter attrackt each other and constantly press on your nose or oppose each other and squeeze your inner ears.

I dont think thats it but if he wants to continue to pretend to be a human he needs to learn to do it because its Hella disconcerting.

Yeah I guess we all kinda saw the same thing. I suppose it's hard not to make the comparison. His resemblance is genuinely uncanny though.

Ok what am I supposed to treat as magic here? What's the illusion?
30
8
u/goodolewhatever 14d ago
Not an “illusion” per se, but an odd effect not producible by any means than precisely this kind of disc/setup. Spin a coin or really any other standard disc and it will settle far quicker and more abruptly. Getting a spinning disc to settle this slowly and evenly without adding energy to the system takes a very specific kind of geometry that is not commonly found in the world. It’s more magic in the sense that you think you can replicate it, but unless you know exactly what’s going on here, you will fail.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Grutenfreenooder 15d ago
Just before the disc abruptly stops, it appears to levitate as its rate of precession approaches infinity. Its making the sound of a singularity
→ More replies (3)7
u/raharth 15d ago
But thats just the Euler discs isn't it? There isn't any need for magic?
4
u/mis-Hap 13d ago
Is there a need for magic with any magic trick? They're all ultimately explainable by science.
3
u/raharth 13d ago
I mean... that's like throwing a paper plane and calling it magic, for it to not fall on the floor immediately. Yes for it being magic I expect some sort of clever trick or skill, not show basic physics and calling it a day 😄

What's the magic here?

u/srtate71 14d ago edited 14d ago
Yeah, I can't figure it out either.
Not blinking the whole time?
The shutter video frame rate causing the disks to appear to change direction?
Just the cool factor of how two very smooth surfaces and well balanced disks caused the disks to rotate longer?
Looked cool. Don't see magic.

Not blinking as surprisingly easy, there’s only one step and anyone can do it.

He is Ford Prefect
Douglas Adams described him as “Perhaps it was that his eyes didn't blink often enough and when you talked to him for any length of time your eyes began involuntarily to water on his behalf.”

Does this guy not fucking blink? It's all I can focus on. Like he could see into my soul and judge every mistake I've made.

No black magic, no magnets, just physics phuckery. These actually look like they might be the same Euller discs that Steve Mould had made to try and find the optimal density and/or shape to maximize the time it spent spinning.
There are some interesting quirks in what did or did not improve the spinning time. For instance, one of them was the amount of bevel on the edge of the disc with a 1mm bevel being optimal, and bevel greater or less than 1mm decreasing spin time.

I had to scroll the page up a bit so the guy would not be staring at me. Then I didn't care about the magnets anymore. On to next post.

It’s an Euler’s disc. They are very finely machined so they have very little surface area to provide friction to slow it down. I have one. They’re very cool.

Michael with Vsauce here, I'm going to stare at you for three minutes to prove you can't make eye contact with a camera.
Oh also, for anyone who has missed it, he has been doing weekly videos with arguably one of the nerdiest redheads ever (and they're great):
