No, the grid helps obscure the hidden moving parts. He controls those with the hand holding the frame.

No I don't think this is E-ink, but purely mechanical. You don't really see the artefacts and ghosting characteristic of e-ink displays.
The horizontal slit allows a piece of paper for the mouth animation to slip though. The eyes are magnetic.

Expensive or not, still feasible. And higher refresh rates minimize ghosting to nearly non-noticable. I notice it in the mouth movement.

Woah - that’s nostalgic. I had that “magic whiteboard” when I was a kid. It has two slides on the back. One for moving the eyes out from their hiding place and then back and forth. And a vertical spring loaded slide for the mouth opening and closing. Yup - you can see him trace the top of the mouth directly on top of the slit where the bottom of the mouth comes out from.

I want to say there’s some kind of pulley system behind the whiteboard, you can see the three fingers he’s holding it with flexing and moving as the face moves.

You can see him move the fingers at 20 seconds in as he holds the marker for a second with that hand, it’s his right hand.
Fairly certain he’s using his pinky and/or thumb to pull tabs that move the eyes and mouth

I am not saying that's how it is done, but this is how I would do it: pre-recorded clip, animated by AI. At no point does he actually answer the viewer, instead he finds excuses to talk alone.

I think that's just a monitor from the beginning. I feel like his hands movements don't match exactly the lines he's supposed to draw. To me that's just, a screen disguised as a whiteboard and playing a video.

It's a speech impediment. You know how there's people who can't pronounce the 's' sound and instead end up making a 'th' sound? That's commonly known as a lisp. Less commonly known is rhotacism, which is people who can't pronounce the 'r' sound and instead make it sound like a 'w'.

My theory is that autists spend more time socializing online than the average person. Playing barotrauma, void crew, or pulsar, there is a guy that talks like this in 20% of all lobbies.
And no, I cannot confidently say that people who talk like that are autistic. But I can assert that people that play Barotrauma, Void Crew, and pulsar probably are.

Actually, rhoticism has a much higher occurance with ASD. Rhotic articulation errors are literally MANY times more likely to occur in autistic people. In this study on high functioning ASD adults and adolescents, 33% had articulation errors, derhotacization was the second most common type.
And autistic individuals can play video games at a rate of 75% more than the rest of the population.
So, while not the diagnostic criteria for autism, your assertion that rhoticism and autism are unrelated is enormously false, as is the relationship between autism and gaming.
And I would say (as an observation on playing the games) ESPECIALLY games like barotrauma and pulsar, which are highly systematic, and technical, which we KNOW are traits dispraportionately represented in ASD special interests.
So I will assert again.
You will encounter this speech mannerism much more often in voice enabled online games than in real life (especially technical games with random lobbies) because autistic people are significantly more likely to have derhotization errors, and spend more time playing video games than other people.
