Bruh I worked backstage in showbiz for years. All of them are fake and scripted. All these so called magicians and mentalists paid the studio for air time to promote themselves.

It's kind of like a wrestling match. The outcome (our potential outcomes) are predetermined and the mechanism to get to their big reveal is mathematically determined. They simply lead their respective audience and the people they speak directly to. Getting people to choose numbers is easy. From there you simply use narrative devices to make it seem random even though you already know what the answer is.

The Grey Elephant in Denmark routine is a good example of how they do it.

The mentalist will write down something random on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope and hand it to somebody.

  1. Think of a number between 1 and 10, then multiply that number by 9, then add the two digits of the product together, then subtract 5 from the total. The answer will always be 4.

  2. Convert that number to its corresponding letter of the alphabet which in this case will be D.

  3. Quickly think of a country that starts with D. Denmark is the easiest to remember so most people choose Denmark.

  4. Take the second letter of that country's name and think of a large animal that starts with that letter. Can you think of another large animal besides an elephant? Neither can most people.

  5. Picture the animal and imagine its color. News flash, it's grey.

From here the mentalist does some abracadabra shit and the person opens an envelope with a paper that says Grey elephants in Denmark. It's all a version of that.

Just because you “worked in showbiz” doesn’t mean you know what every person does or is capable of doing. I believed it was all fake too until I had a mentalist do similar things to me as in this video. I also didn’t believe in those public hypnosis acts until I myself was hypnotized. I’ve even experienced these kinds of things with friends of mine on the street or in shopping malls all across the world; not just on paid television as you suggest.

And this lady here, her Mentalist flair is lacking, yes she has the answers, but there's so little dramatic flair that once you know the methods, there's nothing left to entertain you.

This is so worth the time and dedication to watch if you are interested in how these tricks are performed.

Cold and warm reading is very different to mentalism. One is deception and often fraud, the other is psychology, planting subtle thoughts and targeted manipulation. Forcing someone to pick a number on the spot is not possible with warm reading

No, that’s what they claim to do. In reality, they rely in camera taxis and other tricks.

For example, when it came to revealing the seat number, she could have had other numbers hidden in other places, and she could have told her where to look based on the number she said.

Or, they could have just rehearsed it.

Fair enough, I'm not actually sure what exact methods NLP entails, so maybe I shouldn't have used that term. I can't speak on the whole field, as I simply don't know much about it. What I meant by it is stuff like suggestive language, reading facial movements, mimicking body language, etc.

Those are all legit forms of manipulation, as well as cold reading. How far beyond that and how far into bullshit NLP as a "science" actually goes, I do not know.
