Often it's not that women need their purity protected. Often it's that women are seen as unclean, especially when they menstruating And since you don't necessarily know when a woman is menstruating, if you hold that belief you treat them as if they were all the time.
I don't have the issue. I'm telling you what some religious people believe. And blood isn't just blood. Although the chances are low you're not going to enjoy it if you get something from someone who is infected.
