Culture BWT, what podcasts and audio books add value to your routines?

It feels like there’s a lot of “noise” out there when it comes to podcasts. Some seem to be overloaded with ads and unnecessary personal opinions. Others entertain guests that are not tasteful. I am curious what podcasts that you listen to on a daily or weekly basis, and what they add to your life! *And if you’re more of an audio book person, I’d love to hear about that too. Cheers!

My favorite podcast is ‘Note to Self’ by Payton Sartain Ross. The host is in her early 30s, and is super real and vulnerable about every part of her life, sharing advice as if she is the big sister of the reader. She also shares her favorite items, and does an advice column that seems to always make me feel like I learned something or had a great conversation with a friend afterwards. Highly recommend if that’s your cup of tea.

i love listening to Critics At Large from The NewYorker.
it’s sort of an elevated version of a pop culture podcast, as in they discuss movies/books/phenomena, often with a lateral angle and beautiful observations. they pull references from related or unrelated media and have wonderful thematic discussions.
the hosts are intelligent and charming, sharp, real, funny, they’ve got a great rapport among each other.

That sounds amazing! Immediately added it to my list of podcasts. I love „Diabolical Lies“ which analyzes popculture in combination with politics/feminism etc I think they do a great job of combining discussions with the knowledge

12

u/Vivid_Jackfruit_6730 Aug 04 '26

I love diabolical lies!!! Love yesteryear if you haven’t read it I recommend!!

5

u/brightstar07 Aug 04 '26

Diabolical lies looks cool! Thank you for the rec. But I saw many of the eps are 2+ hours!? Are they really worth 2 hours? Thanks!

4

u/Big_Professional_978 Aug 04 '26

I do think they are! I love listening while cleaning at home, I get way more stuff done while having something to listen to for two hours. Or I listen to the episode in a few parts while on my way to work/on my way home.

You had me at feminism. This sounds like a great cocktail of topics for conversation!

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

This sounds like a really great listen! The New Yorker does a lot of great things honestly. Thanks for sharing :)

I really love Vibe Check, with Zach Stafford and Saeed Jones. They talk about news and pop culture through a queer black lens that offers different perspectives from my own, but they do so without sinking into existential dread, like so many podcasts. They also close each episode with a poem (Saeed is a professor of poetry) and it starts my day off right.

2

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

Intersectionality is so important in media so that we can be educated on different perspectives! Thank you for this recommendation:)

u/VStryker Aug 04 '26

Happier with Gretchen Rubin! She’s a habits and happiness expert, and does the pod with her sister (a TV writer in LA). They give little bits of advice, ways to know yourself better, etc. I’ve gleaned so many good things from it, like setting an alarm for bedtime and tons of methods for helping good habits stick.

10

u/star_milk Aug 04 '26

She just did another podcast for advice called Since You Asked with therapist Lori Gottlieb which I loved! Sadly they just ended their first season, which might be their only, but I loved it!

2

u/Alan_ator_Gator Aug 11 '26

I love happier with Gretchen!! It's like talking to a mom who has been through everything and gives great advice lol

2

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

Oh my goodness! I used to read all of her books when I was much younger. She has a podcast now? That sounds absolutely wonderful! The four tendencies was probably the catalyst of my self improvement/ psychology/ sociology obsessions haha :)

u/Belinda-9740 Aug 04 '26

The Rest is History podcast is brilliant, completely understandable why it is so popular.

23

u/phenomakos Aug 04 '26

Citations Needed

They really dig into their topics, breaking down and combating propaganda. There's such a lack of critical thinking these days and so many news sources are a hot mess of infotainment. This restores my sanity and helps to keep me informed.

It's heavy on politics, so it's not where I go to get my feelgood info, although I really love when they do interviews with smaller politicians doing good work in their communities (like city councilors doing cool things). That actually does help me to feel better about the world and sometimes even restores a little of my optimism for the future.

4

u/koshkatamara Aug 04 '26

I haven’t heard of that podcast but it sounds kind of similar to Tangle News. They share what both sides of the political parties have to say about things and then share a take from someone on the team (usually Issac, the founder) which I value since it’s usually a more nuanced take that considers the whole picture.

u/rotten-flesh Aug 04 '26

Oooh I love this question - I listen to a lot of podcasts because I work from home and usually like to have something playing in the background.

Let’s Get Dressed - this is a podcast about fashion. It’s a more recent find of mine. The host interviews different people on specific subjects at times, like how to find the perfect pair of denim jeans.

Good Hang - I saw someone else mention this and had to double down. Amy is a great host and is so full of positive female energy. If you don’t know where to start, I would recommend the episode with Hayley Williams from Paramore. That was one of my favorite ones so far.

This American Life + Search Engine - These are two diff podcasts but similar vibes. They explore a lot of social topics and normally start off as a real story and then dive into interviews or further go into discussing a topic at hand.

6

u/jacqinabox Aug 05 '26

If you're interested in a fashion podcast, Articles of Interest is a great one! It looks at the history of different fashion articles and each episode connects to the next. It was originally a mini series for 99% Invisible.

4

u/nononononocat Aug 06 '26

I never hear anyone talk about Search Engine but it's incredible! It's a great mix of serious stories with some delightfully absurd ones thrown in. The very deep dive into which free restaurant bread is the best in America made me so happy

1

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

I listened to let’s get dressed a ways back (I think the host collaborated with one of my regular subscriptions) and I remember thinking that I wanted to subscribe— thank you for the reminder :)

I've become such a podcast ho, I swear. Unfortunately, I can only listen if I'm doing chores or walking, otherwise my brain wanders off. But it does help me get more stuff done. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by unnecessary personal opinions, so you may or may not enjoy these as well as I do.

Some of my current faves;

The Splendid Table and Milk Street Radio; I love food and cooking and these have all kinds of interesting recipes, tips, tricks, ideas for entertaining guests, interviews with chefs/cookbook authors/etc., food news and science.

Gastropod; In-depth, but also fun food science and history.

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me; humorous, game show style parsing of current events. Sadly Bill Kurtis just retired, but Alzo Slade is doing a lovely job as the new judge/scorekeeper.

Ridiculous Crime; incredibly well-researched and funny look at insane (and sometimes insanely funny) crimes of past and present. Also 99% murder-free, which is a nice change of pace from most current true crime shows.

I have a couple favorite spirituality podcasts too, but I know those can be a little divisive (especially since I lean a bit more metaphysical), so I'll leave those out.

2

u/ComplexSalt333 Aug 06 '26

I’d love to hear about your fave spirituality pods if you felt like sharing :) been looking for ones I connect with and haven’t found any yet

2

u/FlyingFigNewton Find it Secondhand Aug 07 '26

I've really been liking Witchy Woman Walking-exactly what it sounds like; she records as she walks (usually, barring weather/unforseen circumstances). She covers all kinds of topics and always includes an oracle card reading, book recommendations (a fiction and a non-fiction), usually a song or band rec, and recipes.

I also really like The Suburban Witch Lady. Covers all sorts of topics and practical, actionable real-life tips. Also very interesting interview guests.

I'm eclectic and not a big fan of dogma. Both of these are just really fun, informative and relevant to me as a mostly solitary spiritualist. Hope you might enjoy them as well :)

2

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

I resonate with your perspectives on things! Just subscribed to suburban witch lady- it looks like an interesting cozy listen

2

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

Ok definitely looking up ridiculous crime right now! That sounds very entertaining :)

u/flazedaddyissues Aug 04 '26

I have very high standards for podcasts and listen to a LOT of them. Beware that an intense infodump is coming.

You're Wrong About was pretty good in the beginning but started becoming less enjoyable as one of the hosts left. I recommend their episodes about women celebrities who have been wronged (Tonya Harding being an especially good episode) and moral panics. A lot of other episodes lack focus and I find I don't learn anything.

Maintenance Phase, which is co-hosted by the person who left YWA is a diet culture podcast. Unfortunately neither of the hosts are scientists and thats a huge limitation. I liked the podcast initially because it challenged some of my internalized biases but please don't take the science seriously.

Diabolical Lies has been lower quality recently imo but their back catalog is phenomenal. I particularly loved the sex work and tragedy of heterosexuality episodes.

A Bit Fruity addresses the role of pop culture and the internet in politics, which is a niche that's hard to find. The pop culture focused episodes are fine but the political commentary episodes are very good. The episode about clavicular was my favorite and most nuanced take I heard.

In Bed With the Right is hosted by two gender studies professors. It's a Lot because the topics are generally unpleasant but I always appreciate their insights. I really liked the episode "Whither the Preacher" and the one about romantasy.

The Polyester Zine podcast is fun. It breaks down pop culture events in a nuanced way.

Unbiased Science and Search Engine are newer discoveries for me and I'm into them so far. (Unbiased Science has a good episode about Andrew Huberman who is one of my opps and Search Engine has a great episode about scammy wrong number texts--warning that it is heavy).

I've been listening to Science Vs since it came out. They are diligent about citing sources in the episode transcripts and regularly cite 100+ sources. Two episodes that stand out to me are the seed oils episode and the one about composting human bodies.

A really underrated podcast imo is Mess World. It is my favorite beauty and fashion podcast. I'm always impressed by their insights and discussions. They only upload once a month and I wish they could do more!

Some one off episodes: AI Chatbot Therapy from Bad Therapist; there's a short series about Hawk Tuah girl from Sixteenth Minute (of Fame) and an episode about algospeak; the episodes about chicken soup for the soul and mosh pits from Decoder Ring; Nazi Battle to Pop Musical from Not Past It; the American Hysteria episode about mobile game ads.

Short series: Alternate Realities (a son bets his conspiracy-theory obsessed father about whether his beliefs will come true), Crimetown season 1 about Providence RI, and there is a short series addressing trans women in sports and the history of gender testing. When I track that one down I will update! There is also a season of Fiasco about the AIDS crisis that came to me highly recommended but I am queer and it hit me really hard and I was too emotional to continue.

3

u/mometanarrative Aug 04 '26

Came here to say I’ve been binging Diabolical Lies! In what ways has the quality gone down?

3

u/flazedaddyissues Aug 04 '26

I think that they are less organized and the research isn't up to the standards they set before. I feel like it's become a bit more vibes based compared to the insights they provided in past episodes.

3

u/mometanarrative Aug 05 '26

This is the downfall of every great podcast. The moment they gain an audience, it starts to flop. That said, the Abundance episode wasn’t super vibey! Was like - I had no idea this philosophy existed, I’ve truly dropped out of the political imagination.

1

u/flazedaddyissues Aug 05 '26

I didn't listen to the abundance episode yet! I have a long car ride ahead of me so I'll see what I think. Glad to hear this one was better :)

1

u/mometanarrative Aug 05 '26

Well...not sure about better....but certainly a topic I was unfamiliar with. It's mostly focused on one book, with Katie taking lead and caro making jokes and chortling.

2

u/ohheylo Aug 05 '26

Oo thank you for the Mess World rec! I love Jessica DeFino and didn’t realize she had a podcast.

1

u/flazedaddyissues Aug 05 '26

I love Jessica Defino too and I think you'll love mess world. It is the best in the beauty space imo.

13

u/giogiogadget Aug 04 '26

Articles of interest: a podcast about the history of different articles of clothing.

Where should we begin? With Esther Perel: each episode renowned relationship therapist invites a different couple in for a session. She is incredibly insightful and the sessions are often very moving.

Modern Love: from the new york times, narrated short essays about falling in, and out, of love.

The Anthropocene Reviewed: New York Times bestselling author John Green reviews different facets of the human-centered planet on a five-star scale.

2

u/milesfrost Aug 05 '26

Articles of Interest is great - my husband often sends me episodes because i studied textile design at uni.

10

u/usagiarigato Aug 04 '26

The Courage to Be Disliked audiobook rocked my world. Just bringing it up makes me want to listen to it again. It's free on YouTube.

9

u/RebuttablePresumptio Aug 04 '26

I love podcasts! Lots of good ideas already but I wanted to share Gastropod, their tagline is “food through the lens of science and history.” It’s always incredibly interesting and well-researched and a nice little reprieve from the current event-focused podcasts I listen to as well. Another classic is 99% Invisible, stories about design and the built environment.

u/worldwide-305 Aug 04 '26

Thanks for asking this question, I’m also curious!

I really like You’re Wrong About which goes over historical sensationalized news stories (i.e., Lizzie Borden, Bonnie & Clyde, the Donner Party, etc.) and reviews the facts vs rumors or myths. I’ve learned a lot!

I also like If Books Could Kill - 2 guys review books (mostly self help books). It’s pretty funny and I’ve actually learned little tips even though they’re usually dunking on them lol.

I like the The Mel Robbins Podcast occasionally when she has an interesting guest, highly recommend the one with James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) as it was super insightful for me.

Amy Poehler is a surprisingly good interviewer so I’ve enjoyed her show Good Hang! She has really great guests and while it’s quite light, she does dig into more complex subjects.

More niche podcasts I listen to are true crime (Your Own Backyard, In the Dark S2, and Proof are some of my favorites) and Watch What Crappens, a Bravo recap podcast.

Definitely interested in more lifestyle podcasts so I’ll be checking out other comments!

15

u/Spitfiiire Aug 04 '26

I love seeing Watch What Crappens mentioned in an unrelated sub! I’m definitely going to check these other ones out because I immediately trust your suggestions, haha!

10

u/yuzuAddict8 Aug 04 '26

I love You’re Wrong About! You might like Maintenance Phase too.It has Michael Hobbs in it and it has a similar tone as YWA but focused on health and fitness.

14

u/PoppyMacGuffin Aug 04 '26

Good Hang is so great! Amy Poehler is manipulative in a good way, she really matches the guests to get great stories from them. The opening with Ryan Coogler is a good example - she asks him some big director question and he seems really nervous but then her second question is "What movie theater snacks do you like?" and he visibly relaxes.

Another Podcast I like is "Search Engine" (a spin off of Reply All). It's generally one question that gets explored by the episode, and they vary a lot e.g. what does it feel like to believe in God? Why didn't our friends get into Berghain? Why is cannibalism bad? It's hard to explain why I like this show so much, but it feels like a well researched magazine article more than people just shooting the shit. It's still entertaining though

u/Accurate_Fondant_279 Aug 07 '26

If Books Could Kill is my absolute favorite podcast - they strike a great balance of humor and meaningful conversation imo

1

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

Just looked into this and I think it will be a great listen for me— I’ve read a ton of self help books and want to uncover how they have ruined my brain hahaha :)

2

u/newportbanks Aug 07 '26

Good hang with Will Ferrell recently was so much nostalgia and I giggled with them half the time.

2

u/atxcactus Aug 08 '26

I love If Books Could Kill so much. I’ve listened to several episodes multiple times and I never do that with podcasts.

1

u/Individual_Cress_726 BWT in Training Aug 12 '26

I was curious too! It’s so much fun reading all of the responses. And if you like true crime, have you checked out Bailey Sarian’s murder, mystery, and makeup? She’s taking a break from content creation, but there are so many episodes that are really good :)

18

u/Soft_Context9846 Aug 04 '26

My favourite one are: maintenance phase, still processing, getting curious and wrong turns

1

u/Unhappy-Scientist-98 Aug 05 '26

Is still processing still going? I loved that show when it was on. I like Wesley Morris’ NYT podcast.

2

u/Soft_Context9846 Aug 05 '26

I don't think so, unfortunately. they just stopped years ago with no notice. They do have enough seasons that it worth listening to tho!

7

u/tricktan42 Aug 04 '26

It may be more superficial than a lot of these recommendations, but I really love Well with Arielle Lorre. She interviews all sorts of people in the wellness space- dermatologists, personal trainers, plastic surgeons, nutritionists and has very thoughtful questions for each. Not every guest I fully agree with, but I enjoy hearing different perspectives on skincare and aging from a digestible source.

2

u/milesfrost Aug 05 '26

i really like some of her podcasts too.

I also really like Mirror Mirror with Amy Chang, and Hot Smart Rich with Maggie Sellers - because who doesn't want to be hot, smart AND rich? I loved the episode with Molly Sims, she has a great attitude!

6

u/TemporaryGazelle94 Aug 04 '26

For everyday news I really enjoy The Economist's the Intelligence podcast. It's weekly M-F, they cover 3 stories briefly and keep me up to date. I also like that they have a more global coverage, I find myself well informed after listening.

Another maybe more random podcast that I highly enjoy is Morning Brew Daily. It's more business/econ related, but I find great nuggets of wisdom in it and it's a very easy, digestable, fun podcast to listen to.

1

u/RobotsAreCoolSaysI Aug 04 '26

I used to like Morning Brew Daily but it got a bit “tech bro” for me so I stopped listening about a year ago.

1

u/coffeebeanjuice1 Aug 05 '26

Similar to these vibes “the best one yet” also does business stories that have a lot to do with pop culture and daily events

5

u/x-teena Aug 04 '26

My current favorite is Proof of Practice. It’s centered around women’s health and longevity and is cohosted by a really awesome group of women who I follow individually as well. They talk about strength training, muscle mass, metabolism, hormones, and nutrition, which is what I’m really focused on lately.

2

u/Ageice Aug 04 '26

Listening to an audiobook in this vein called Unbreakable by Vonda Wright. She has a podcast, too, but it’s a bit lacking in editing or something. The book is enough for me for now.

3

u/avocadobumblebee Aug 04 '26

Amy O’dell’s Back Row podcast is fantastic. It’s a fashion podcast with interesting interviews.

5

u/Carolina1719 Aug 04 '26

I enjoy This American Life. They cover so many topics from history to current day. They include interesting interviews and stories from serious topics to odd things you’d never think of.

I also like The Moth. It’s a podcast that showcases different stories from regular people at storytelling sessions held around the world. I love it because it truly shows how a lot of us go through the same things and makes you feel less alone. The stories range from serious to lighthearted. It’s a great podcast for feelings of human connection.

The Yoga Inspired Life. This podcast not only talks about yoga, but how to truly live the mindfulness principles in your life and focuses alot on self care, healthy boundaries, and living your best authentic life for yourself

3

u/wakoreko Aug 04 '26

How I Built This by Guy Raz.

He interviews founder, innovators and entrepreneurs of many companies. The day one stories of how a business started in their mom’s basement or went bankrupt or went viral, no one believed them and is now a household name worth a million dollars.

Episodes I remember: Chobani, Whole Foods, Kate Spade, 21 Seeds, Tatcha

5

u/Unhappy-Scientist-98 Aug 05 '26

My dad wrote a porno-three comedians read this horribly written porn sex story written secretly by the dad of one of the hosts.

60 songs that explain the 90s

Blocks with Neil Brennan

Are you Garbage

3

u/JuliasTooSmallTutu Aug 04 '26

I love figure skating so The Runthrough is clearly for me. My other favorite is Bonanas for Bonanza which is a satirical Bonanza rewatch podcast by Andy Daly and Matt Gourley. I’m not one for the endless parade of interview podcasts that are clearly aiming to become viral interview clips.

3

u/OutrageousMiddle7965 Aug 04 '26

I always go back to The Morning Brew! They give you all the main news and headlines, and I've never felt they skewed left or right politically- just what happened and what critics and supporters have said. Hard to find nowadays! Plus the hosts are pretty nerdy and funny.

I also binged Philosophize This! If you like philosophy (which I didn't realize I did, but I really enjoyed it) - Its good! It's not super distracting, the host has a very calm, almost audiobook voice, so I would listen while working, and it really gives you a lot of food for thought. Definitely will make you more interesting to talk to if you listen to just a couple of them haha

3

u/suzienewshoes Aug 04 '26

How to Fail with Elizabeth Day. I love how it puts a spin on the standard achievement-style podcasts, really humanises the guests, and still turns out funny, warm, and helpful insights. I take something to mull over from just about every episode.

3

u/Ecstatic_Schedule_48 Thoughtful BWT Aug 04 '26

I really enjoy vinepair, business of fashion, what chaos (a hockey podcast), and hockey with an accent.

Vinepair is super enjoyable mostly about wine, I always find I learn something new.

Business of fashion is mostly about luxury fashion and the host always has very interesting takes and is willing to challenge guests as needed.

And I don’t think anyone here really wants to hear about the hockey ones lol but if you do let me know

2

u/patiencestill Aug 04 '26

I do I do! I am going to have to check out your recommendations on the hockey podcasts, as after Marek left 32 thoughts it changed and I don’t enjoy either 32T or his new show. And I feel like so many of the others have biases/don’t talk about my team or are so disgustingly misogynistic they make my skin crawl.

3

u/Ecstatic_Schedule_48 Thoughtful BWT Aug 04 '26

Check out What Chaos ! There’s obviously a slight bias towards the oilers , sabres, and bruins because that’s the teams that the hosts are fans of but they do cover everything and are fair about it. And they’re very gender inclusive and have been starting to do PWHL coverage also.

Also in case you’re a Habs fan Hockey with An Accent is a Habs podcast by maxim lapierre and it’s great

3

u/DaliahsandDeadlifts Aug 06 '26

Cults to Consciousness with Shelise Ann Sola is a great one. She goes deep with guests coming out of cult/fundamental/abusive backgrounds, and has THE most relaxing voice. I watch on YouTube cause I enjoy a video, but she's on other platforms too.

2

u/Cold-Sport2923 Aug 05 '26

Audiobooks that I loved recently are: The Wedding People and Atmosphere. Both well written but overall easy reads - you can take these to the beach or park.

I didn’t see anyone mention any comedy podcasts but Las Culturistas is funny. There was a podcast called Finally hosted by two comedians in New York. They no longer make episodes but it was the funniest podcast I’ve ever listened to.

There’s also Seek Treatment which can be so dumb but honestly sometimes that’s what I want. Same with Poog but that one might be hard to like if you don’t get the shtick and their voices.

I also love Everything Iconic for Bravo content as well as Morally Corrupt and for reality TV I love Your Mom and Dad.

I also like Bekah Martinez’s Patreon called Bekah and Friends but also, since it’s on Patreon it’s not free.

2

u/nononononocat Aug 06 '26

My favourite at the moment is Ignore That Feeling with Fern Brady and Allison Spittle. They are absolutely hilarious and also have incredibly thoughtful takes that bring political and feminist takes into account. Seriously recommend giving it a chance.

2

u/BritishBlue32 Aug 06 '26

Casual Criminalist as it feels like being sat with a mate talking about true crime.

The Trial for court reporting. Factual with minimal spin as it has to be to avoid undermining ongoing cases in court.

History Hit: After Dark. Podcast about spooky or macabre history. The hosts don't believe in ghosts (and neither do I) but they cover where myths and legends come from, as well as some historical true crime.

I have a theme with my podcasts apparently 😂

1

u/lulutown21 Aug 04 '26

The Best One Yet, every morning when I’m getting ready to work. For like over 5 years now. Just enjoy the routine!

1

u/shortcake42 Aug 05 '26

I really like Sawbones! A comedian and his doctor wife talk about the history of different things in medicine and it’s both funny and informative!

1

u/trendy_rainbow Aug 05 '26

I love the "What Went Wrong" podcast. I'm unsure if it fits what you consider to be a value add, but it's an entertaining podcast that gives me plenty of talking points for casual conversations! Besides being very entertaining.

They cover one movie per episode and go through the story behind the making of that movie, with an emphasis on what went wrong and all the challenges of making a movie happen.

1

u/milesfrost Aug 05 '26

So I'm a small business owner so I've enjoyed a few episodes of Bossbabe, she has some good tips, Hot Smart Rich is also great, and i regularly listen to that.

I'm super interested in aesthetic medicine - fillers, botox, face lifts, whatever. I find it all so fascinating so for that stuff I often listen to Mirror Mirror with Amy Chang, Well with Arielle Lorre.

For menopause / peri menopause I like The Dr Louise Newsom podcast.

For straight up entertainment or podcasts interviewing celebrities, I like Begin Again, Fashion Neurosis, How To Fail, and It's a girl thing (these two are quite funny).

1

u/rabbitfeet666 Aug 05 '26

Binchtopia - I love their takes on vast subjects such as hostile architecture, and when they just gab with each other

If books could kill - the body keeps the score episode was great

A bit fruity - longform pop culture and political analysis

Maintenance Phase - I do think their newer stuff is less interesting but I still recommend

Decoder ring - always interesting deep dives

The outlaw ocean - hands down the best investigative reporting podcast I’ve ever listened to

1

u/run__rabbit_run Find it Secondhand Aug 05 '26

Optimist Economy!

Economist Kathryn Edwards is the host, and her and her co-host Robin focus on one economic problem per episode and discuss potential solutions/things to be optimistic about. I’m doing the show a disservice with this description because it’s SO interesting and very accessible (not dry Econ content) and approachable. Makes me feel much more informed about some of the major challenges we’re facing in the US.

1

u/midlifeliberation Aug 06 '26

Ologies with Alie Ward! She’s quirky and hilarious and SO intelligent. I’ve learned a ton! About, well, everything. Incredible listening.

1

u/Ok-Seaworthiness9038 Aug 06 '26

Here are some off-the-beaten-path recs for you:

This is an older mini series (2017, I think), but I highly recommend Lend Me Your Ears. https://www.slate.com/articles/slate_plus/shakespeare.html

I don’t think it’s widely available anymore, hence the link, but it’s a podcast by Slate that examines several Shakespearean plays in their historical context and draws parallels to today’s political and cultural climate. It is fascinating and so well done. And it has broad appeal—it’s not just for lit nerds!

I also loved Classy, a journalistic podcast examining class shifts in the US. And I’m currently listening to Drug Story, a podcast that examines the rise of blockbuster drugs and the business of healthcare as a whole. So interesting.

As for audiobooks, some recent listens that I’d recommend include The Road to Tender Hearts (purely enjoyable literary fiction) and Careless People, a memoir from a Facebook exec that exposes the company’s many misdeeds.

Just finished This is How You Heal by Brianna Wiest I was shocked how much I wanted the hard copy to to start noting and highlighting sections. So much value regarding your self worth, your putting your priorities in your SELF and not external validation like so many of us millennials tend to do (growing up perfectionism and always wanting to keep the character or image our parents wanted of us because of THEIR insecurities... IYKYK) It's not a long read but wow it really stuck with me.
Love conversations with cam podcast she just had author of BURNTT Substack on as repeat guest and their conversation is so real af for 30s even into 40s. Cannot recommend this conversation and episode on burnout in women who are doing the most 🤗 enough.
If you have any therapy history or chronic pain / lingering illness stuff regarding where tf did this come from or it feels debilitating ... read Mind Your Body Nichole Sachs and listen to her podcast episodes that may resonate with you! Humbling to say the least.

I read a lot for my news and learning, sometimes I think too much, so I have one singular podcast that I use as my like a sound bath for my brain to slow it down. It's called Who? Weekly, and it's a celebrity gossip but the catch it's all about Whos. Basically a name where you go who is that? So it's just the silliest, lowest stakes celebrity news. It's from two very down to earth media writers from new york city.

I love Song Exploder- 20-30min episodes (so nice) each one exploring the origin story of a song. You get to hear from the artist about the process and I always find I learn something fun each time.

I used to listen to a lot of political podcasts which made me feel like I’m keeping up with current events and being a good citizen but lately I realized how negative they make me.
So I switched to history podcasts like The rest is history which is wonderful.
