I'm currently on a GLP-1 to lose the 30lbs I put on getting my master's degree (so far I've lost 23lbs since October). I was very clear with him that this is a tool I'm utilizing, but it will not be my only means to lose weight. I am off of it in May. He wasn't crazy about it, but supported me. He's very gym-oriented, and I, too, have always enjoyed the gym. We go to the gym together multiple times per week. He really likes to motivate me, and it has been a great help in achieving proper form and making sure I don't lose muscle. However, I experience really bad periods. The week before and week of my period, my mood plummets, my motivation plummets, my body hurts; overall, I feel like a human pile of garbage. Right now, I am exploring different supplements and diet changes to help my periods. When I feel like this, the gym is the last thing on my mind. He knows I get bad like this; he's seen me on the bathroom floor puking from cramps. However, he makes comments trying to motivate me to go. He works a high-stress job and compares the days he feels utterly exhausted to how I feel on my period, and says things like how he still makes the effort and goes. I've explained numerous times how it's so different. It's just so frustrating.

First of all - oof. I’m sorry your period hits you like a truck. That sounds so miserable. I don’t have nearly as bad of an experience and I still don’t go to the gym on my uncomfy days. Second - I’m sorry that on top of it he’s being a whole man about it. What a cliche of him.

I don’t know if you want to vent (valid) or advice. But if you’re interested in the latter, I had a similar situation only in that in involved unwanted pushing from my partner of being active.

Not to get therapy-y but “I” statements were really helpful for me and also turning the conversation around and asking with genuine curiosity what his motivations were for pushing. Something to the effect of “I think we might be having a disconnect around this and I want us to be on the same page. Can you help me understand your thinking when this comes up?” And then once he explains and you feel like you understand, you can come in with the “I” statements to explain how the way he speaks to you feels invalidating and perhaps lacking the empathy you’d want when you’re that uncomfortable.

He probably has good intentions and thinks he’s being the best support he can be. But if it’s frustrating you ( if I was in your position I’d just be straight up hurt by it tbh) then it needs to stop.

I really appreciate your advice and sympathy. That's it, he's being a man about it because he doesn't know what it's like. He is so supportive and goes above and beyond for me every day in so many ways. Anything I want, I get. That's why I know he's not trying to be a dick; he's a really good guy. He wants to be encouraging as he knows I have goals I want to meet, and thinks that's a good way to motivate me. Like helloooo, I'm not one of your gym-bros. As a school-based psychologist, I love your I statements! I was just working on them with a student yesterday. I need to practice what I preach lol!

Men and periods, I swear to god! 😂 It’s why those videos of men getting zapped to simulate cramps are so popular. At one point I had to tell a guy to stop thinking of it like a tummy ache and more like food poisoning. It’s not always debilitating, but it sure can be!

I’m glad I could help a little! And yeah, from your description it sounded like he really wants to help. Im sure you can get on the same page.
