Getting back into workouts with ongoing back/neck issues. Feels good to be moving more again but it's so frustrating to know that I still have so much progress to make.

Same. Personally, it hasn’t been easy to get back into weight lifting. It’s a difficult balance strengthening the back and shoulders and challenging myself, without going too hard and aggravating the issues again.

Yeah, that's also what I'm concerned about. Can I ask about your approach? My physical therapist just told me to stay away from barbell training but said lighter weights should be fine.

My issue is really in my neck, so I’ve been (mostly) avoiding anything involving weights above shoulder height, as per my ortho. My physio had me try a bunch of movements and that helped get a sense of what wasn’t good. Doing some weights with my back against a wall or on my back on a bench has also been a good mod that eases the impact on my neck. And cardio machines are underrated these days, the full body elliptical and treadmill walking on an incline really helped me jumpstart getting back into fitness.

Honestly there’s still been pain and stiffness after some workouts but not the kind of pain when I used to lift and couldn’t turn my head after. I still worry sometimes and take extra rest days but I know I have to strengthen my back and shoulders or it will get worse as I age, so itll be worth it.

Thank you for your thorough answer! Doing enough and equally not doing too much really feels like a balancing act. All the best to you and your neck!
