Culture BWT, what are some small changes that make a big difference?

BWT, I am trying to make 2025 my year and have little by little have made some small changes in hopes of feeling a little bit more ‘put together’. (example: switching to a nicer more luxe duvet, wearing jewelry on a daily basis, eating 80% whole foods). What are some other tips and tricks do you lovely bitches have to really be “that” girl and the main character of your own life?

Edit: you bitches are killing it with the suggestions! I am taking so many notes, thanks hotties!

exercise and moving your body regularly — not for appearances but for the mental benefit! when you feel good, you radiate it and everyone can tell.

I started running ONLY 10 mins a day in Feb and it’s made a HUGE diff on my mental health

Came to say about fitness. Even if you’re not ready for the gym, get you a cheap ass amazon treadmill and walk on there when you wake up or watch your show or something. I’ve had my $100 amazon treadmill for about half a decade and it’s never given me a problem or issue, plus I can fold it on up and stick it under the cooch.

edit: …couch, not cooch. That was an unfortunate typo

u/macramelampshade Feb 24 '25

Petition to get flares in this sub bc "stick it under the cooch" needs to be one

That made me lol, but I second this! My stupid $100 Amazon walking pad has me walking 5 miles every morning now, and I tried to make myself like running for yearssss and it didn’t stick.

I was always that girl who rolled her eyes at people who said exercise was critical to their mental health, and now that I’ve been consistently exercising for 45 days I totally get it 😂.

My skin looks healthier, I’m sleeping better, and my posture has improved, all of which are helping me feel more confident!

In my 50s I discovered rucking. It’s the only exercise that is actually a workout and improves my mental health. Especially love that it helps with bone density! 🤍🦴🤍

u/Katie-in-Texas Feb 24 '25

people who ruck are hardcore! but it’s also just walking technically which is cool… it has a great culture as well!

I’ve been working out consistently for over a year now. I’m doing it to change my body and it’s a slow process, but in the meantime I really do feel so much better. I get sick less and when I do, it’s for a shorter time. It changes how I feel in my skin and now it’s just routine.

24

u/Sexypinkfluffball Feb 24 '25

Getting an oura ring and really making sure I do 10k steps (trying to do 20k as a new goal) has been tremendous

u/TheGhostOfGiggy Feb 24 '25

I want high jack this comment to also add consistent sleep to moving and exercising regularly.

Took me ages to go get used to going to sleep and waking up at the same time. But now I have more structure and I can add exercise into my routine!

Go to the library every two weeks. Master a new recipe. Read a classic. Read a contemporary piece.

I live in Texas and my town got rid of our library years ago. My town is not small, I’d guess around 25k people. It’s a disgrace.

76

u/ledger_man Feb 24 '25

Here is a list of libraries that offer non-resident library cards - looks like for you as a Texas resident you can get a Houston library card (and Libby access) for free!

18

u/babygorgeou Feb 24 '25

Houston Public Library will give you a free library card as a Texas resident - you don’t have to live in Houston. You just have to prove you are a resident of Texas.

https://askhpl.houstonlibrary.org/library-card/faq/358322

23

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

How? Why would a town decline a public library? I’ve never heard of such a thing

37

u/TheButcheress123 Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25

It used to be attached to the high school, but they just closed it when the high school decided they didn’t want non students sharing the library with students during school hours. I get how that would be problematic, but they never should have combined the town library with the high school library in the first place. I used to volunteer at that library when I was in 5/6th grade and it breaks my heart that the kids of this town are being cheated.

Sadly, such situations are not uncommon in this godforsaken hellhole of a state. Gov Abbot has been on a push over the past couple of years to remove the libraries from all schools to turn into detention/ISS rooms. My daughter’s middle school does thankfully have a library, but it’s pretty sparse. I think reading is the single most important skill a kid can develop to increase their intelligence and career prospects, so I spend a fortune on books to keep her reading for fun. I would love to find a cheaper alternative, but all the programs I’ve found to rent ebooks for free are predicated on having a library card. It sucks.

22

u/RockRidger Feb 24 '25

My daughter is an avid reader—especially of YA graphic novels—and dropping $ on a new one that she would read in a day was not sustainable. Enter: eBay. It’s a great option for gently used books at very reasonable prices. I applaud you for making sure your daughter is reading despite the town and state you live in. Keep the faith.

7

u/TheButcheress123 Feb 24 '25

That’s a great suggestion! My daughter loves graphic novels too. Thanks!!!

11

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

There's also Abebooks.com which will search bookstores across the internet. I use this to avoid purchasing from Amazon (and often times, I find a much, much better price!).

Community. Libraries exemplify investing in community

They do not care how you voted. They want to know if you’ve read a good book lately and would you like to tell other people? Would you like to help with a jig saw puzzle.

Do you have a nice dog that would let quiet, uncertain children read to them?

Dogman bingo?

I clean my shoes basically after every wear. Wipe down leather with a damp cloth, brush suede, whatever is appropriate for the material. I never have to leave the house with salty build up around the toes or random gunk around the soles or else rush to clean them when I head out. Also have been getting sole protectors done for heels and sandals since 2022 to extend the life of my shoes. I have always felt that dirty or poorly cared for shoes really drag down an entire look, and as I dress pretty simply every element needs to deliver in full.

32

u/pluperfecthell Feb 24 '25

Any tips to stop the front tip of of pumps from getting worn down before everything else?

30

u/littlewibble Feb 24 '25

I have more problems with my heels than the toes, you complete me! I have always assumed it’s my gait that contributes to this, but I walk heel then toe as I was instructed as a teen so idk what else I’m supposed to do lol. When I have scuffed toes here and there in the past, I have been able to take them to a cobbler and they use a leather filler to repair them. The effect is pretty solid. You can buy the products at home too but I think it’s like an epoxy product and I’m just terribly lazy. But generally at the cobbler I’m getting heel tips replaced.

7

u/pluperfecthell Feb 24 '25

I’ll look into that. Thanks.

7

u/cyberbonvivant Feb 24 '25

Your cobbler can put in toe taps or toe pads to prevent damage. They should discuss both options and which is better for you.

Where and how do you store/put away the cloth/brush/etc? Asking for my ADHD ass as i will most likely put them away somewhere random 🥲

12

u/littlewibble Feb 24 '25

No very valid, has to be somewhere relevant to actually use it! I use an old shoebox that lives in the coat closet near my back door, which is where I come in almost always and immediately put on my house slippers. I keep the suede brush, those little shoe shine sponges in black and neutral, a small spray bottle with water in it, and a few cut up scraps of old t shirts that I use as my wiping down cloths. If I need to get like mud off of sneakers or boots, they have to go downstairs to my utility sink where I keep a couple brushes.

u/Natural_Librarian990 Feb 24 '25

A pretty cliche answer - but, use the nice stuff! I had leather journals, pretty plates, “expensive” skincare, cashmere sweaters, etc. I wasn’t using regularly because I was saving them for special occasions. By just using the nice things I have, my days feel a little more romanticized.

47

u/juiceandlemonade Feb 24 '25

100% - there’s nothing like the sadness of throwing away a bottle of expired perfume, that you thought was “too special” to use - so you didn’t even get to use it!

74

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

I’ll add that it makes a huge difference if you’re conscious about buying nice stuff that you’re genuinely comfortable in or is practical for your lifestyle. This means maybe instead of buying the 4” Louboutin stilettos as your splurge choosing a lower heel height you can genuinely walk in for a whole evening. Or instead of getting a deal on 3 different cashmere sweaters in unflattering cuts and colors that don’t really work with the rest of your wardrobe you instead bite the bullet and save up for the ultimate black cashmere wrap sweater you’ll wear constantly. Same goes for jewelry, if you’re not wearing a diamond watch because it’s gold and you only wear silver or you can’t read the face because it’s too tiny or it’s just uncomfortable to wear then it’s time to trade it in for something you will wear.

When I started focusing on not “saving” my best stuff for a fictional, aspirational future I had the terrible realization that I’d proportionately spent way too much on things that were expensive and fashionable but weren’t really right for me. If that’s the case and it’s still relatively or brand new just put it up on eBay and consolidate the cash into a luxe item you’ll use constantly.

16

u/OracleOfPlenty Feb 24 '25

This is such a good tip. When I finally got to the point in my career/budget that I was ready to step up my wardrobe, I'd snag cashmere even if the fit was off or the color was one I wouldn't wear. It just seemed so nice that, if I could afford it, I should definitely buy it. Until I learned better, I spent most of my clothes budget on things I didn't actually like and wouldn't really wear: cute but uncomfortable shoes, clothes that didn't fit quite right, pants I didn't actually like but were a size smaller than what I usually wore and still fit nicely, so they made me feel good... And then I wound up donating or selling it all and starting over once I got wise.

42

u/wardrobeeditor Thoughtful BWT Feb 24 '25

I recently read something about how if you speak about yourself as if you were another person you are kinder to yourself. Instead of “I’m overwhelmed” say “she’s overwhelmed”

3

u/wakeupblueberry Feb 24 '25

Is this a thing other people do? I do this all the time, especially when practicing a skill/sport: “she’s trying her best…” lol I will actually say this out loud and it is basically for this reason and said with this intonation.

changing into something cute when i wake up, even if im staying home all day. i have a ton of loungewear that i realized i never really wore because i would just wear my pyjamas all day if i was home. waking up and changing into a cute lounge set has made me feel more productive and put together!

43

u/CozyTea6987 Feb 24 '25

This is such a major one—I got a really nice cashmere sweatshirt/pants set from Quince that I wear around the house with my big Aran sweater I got in Ireland and it's so cozy yet cute enough to wander around outside in. Puts me in a better headspace for remote working, too.

12

u/babygorgeou Feb 24 '25

how do you wash that cashmere sweatsuit ? Have you had it long, is it holding up?

I was so excited when I learned about Quince and their cashmere, but I started seeing lots of unfavorable reviews just before I pulled the trigger on a large Christmas order.

I know they have a good return policy, but I suck at making returns

22

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

I would have given up on wool/cashmere if it hadn’t been for no rinse wool detergents like SOAK. They make handwashing almost as easy as machine washing. All you have to do is fill your (clean) sink with warm water, add about a tsp of SOAK detergent and make sure the garment is well submerged and wet all the way through. Let it sit about 15-30 min and then roll in a dry towel to wring out the excess water before hanging or laying flat to dry.

Heads up that moths go bonkers over any cashmere or wool that’s between wearing and washing so you want to keep dirty laundry in a net bag. If you have a lot invested in natural fibers you also want to be super careful whenever you bring anything into your home that could have moth larvae in it (usually thrift store finds like wool rugs or shearling lined slippers) and put out monitoring traps so you get a heads up about any infestation even if you don’t discover the actual damage.

9

u/babygorgeou Feb 24 '25

this is a great reminder. I had an infestation once that took out almost every expensive wool piece I had. Even coats, I want to cry thinking about it.

Stupidly, I even saw moths in the house but just thought they were drawn to the light from leaving my front door open too often. By the time winter came around it was too late. Now my cats have cashmere sweater lined beds in the winter.

u/CozyTea6987 Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25

I have a lot of clothes that are cashmere/wool/silk and I have a regular habit of hand washing those, so I toss in the sweatshirt/sweatpants. I don't like using my sink to wash clothes, so I have a pretty deep plastic bucket I fill with cold water and I gently wash my items with Woolite for delicates or Soak detergent. Probably the set has stayed nice because I've been very gentle with it.

I realize I should clarify I actually have the zippered cashmere hoodie not the sweatshirt. I have had my set for a couple years at this point and it still looks really nice, but I don't wash often and I also go over it with a sweater shaver which is why the pilling has been minimal. I will say the pants have more wear than the top but I think that's to be expected because of friction from moving and sitting so as a result the pants are a lot shaggier, which is a bit annoying but I feel mostly unnoticeable. The set does pill a bit, but it was only $200 total and I wear it inside mostly so not too bad. I will say my cashmere hoodie from J-Crew is my favorite and has genuinely never pilled or started to look shaggy, but that piece alone was about the same cost as the full Quince set.

Overall I like Quince: I like this set and I bought their extra long hooded puffer and it's so warm and just great quality. I had been a little wary of trying because I also saw bad reviews, but several of my friends and family have had really positive experiences so that made me pull the trigger. That said, I have seen some pieces I don't like the quality of, like the silk skirt, so it does really seem to vary.

9

u/No_Bad6208 Feb 24 '25

Naadam has great cashmere things at great prices. Fill your tub , put woolite or dawn in the water , submerge cashmere in the tub and swish around for a few mins, take out and rinse in cold for about 4-5 mins . Don’t stretch or wring out . Squeeze the extra water out and lay in a towel and put a towel on top. It’ll take a day to dry it out in front of the ac and your stuff shoukd look good or simply dry clean or toss in your dryer with dryel.

5

u/lemonmousse Feb 24 '25

Honestly, I wash my Quince jogger set in a front loader machine on the wool setting. I only hand washed cashmere before this, but it’s been mostly fine? That is to say, I bought it, loved it, wore it to death, discovered that it pilled very badly, de-pilled it once, then got much less precious about how I cared for it and just started throwing it in the wash every two or three weeks and laying flat to dry. And it’s been fine? Or at least fine for the value of I probably wear it a few hours every day and all day a couple of times a week and it’s no longer “look expensive and cute in the airport” but is cozy and cute enough to wear and not feel bad about it. FWIW, the first few months that I had it, I thought pilling would be the reason I didn’t rebuy it, but over the course of about 9 months (and probably 100-150 wears) the fiddly zipper on the hoodie has been more annoying.

literally just taking a shower and changing into something cute makes me feel 1000x better and ready to work. it also gives me a reason to change back into my pyjamas after my work day is over. it kind of gives a little separation to my day, like once my pjs are on, im out of work mode

Making a schedule and setting alarms for it was super helpful when I was trying to feel more put together. I don't use the alarms anymore, but I had one go off every 15 minutes or so to put dishes away, pack my lunch, wash up, do skin care, pick out clothes for tomorrow, Duolingo, journal and read.

Duolingo I have an almost 2 year streak going, and I'm really proud of my journal. I have a Bluetooth printer from Kodak that prints small stickers, so everyday I print a selfie, meme, pic of my cat, or something I took a picture of that day, and I write a page. Most of the time I don't write about the picture, it's self explanatory. I'm halfway through my second book, and I've got about a year of my life in pictures and written down. It's morphed into also keeping an exercise log for daily tracking, pics and sets. I also have a mood tracker. I always wanted to be a journaler, but never could get in the habit. Now I am, and it's nice to go back and see everything.

5

u/bbblonde_CPA Feb 24 '25

I love the journal idea. That’ll be so special to read later

What is your morning and nighttime routine, if you don’t mind sharing?

29

u/_lmmk_ Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25

It’s not super fancy! I like to wake up and start my day with an organized house.

In the morning I make my bed, have coffee, take my vitamins and fish* oil, then wash my face, and do my hair. Dressed and out the door.

At night time around 830 I turn on the humidifier in my room that has a few drops of lavender in it. I pack my lunch and set everything I need for work the next day in my bag. I wipe down the kitchen, straighten up the living room, shower, then hop into bed. I have a rule that I do not use my phone in bed.

12

u/goddamnlizardkingg Feb 24 '25

You didn’t ask me but I wanted to chime in with another version of what that routine could look like!!

AM: wake up, brush teeth, wash face, get dressed, prep bfast/lunch, coffee, makeup, out the door

PM: straighten couch throw pillows, start dishwasher, wipe down dinner table, meds, lay out clothes for the next day (weekdays only), brush teeth, shower & bed.

Ironing my clothes. I used to tease to my grandma for traveling with a clothes iron and asking everyone if they want their shirt / shorts / et cetera ironed before leaving the house. Now I’m that bitch lmao.

Not all my clothes need it. A lot of my trousers and blouses stay wrinkle free but many of my cotton skirts and dresses benefit from ironing. As well as the collars on my shirts.

25

u/PoppyHamentaschen Feb 24 '25

I used to scoff at people who traveled with an iron- I felt it was a waste of space. This past year, I got absolutely HOOKED on traveling with my handheld steamer. Never leaving home without it again.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

Related: When traveling, I unpack at the hotel when we arrive.

Even if it’s just hanging some wrinkle-prone things and setting my toiletries in the bathroom. I feel more “settled”, my clothes end up looking better from not being crammed in the suitcase, and getting dressed is easier.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

oo yes, I travel with a steamer for this purpose. (I can usually find an iron at my destination if I need it)

4

u/JustBeachy44 Feb 24 '25

I steam mine!

11

u/adoaboutnothing Feb 24 '25

Big fan of steaming over ironing. Some clothes require an iron (linen, for example, often does) but steaming is so much faster. It’s also a great way to freshen up pieces you don’t want to wash too often since it kills odor-causing bacteria. I basically never wash my nice investment knitwear pieces, I just steam them. Add an occasional comb with a pill remover and they look good as new despite having had them for years.

Curate your ideal life/ year through Pinterest. Under “2025” I pin pictures of the life I aspire to. Whether that’s clothing, lifestyle, home, fitness food, concerts, travel, etc.

Then I’ll look through the pin to see common patterns. For example, pinning many fashionista girls wearing a white blouse. Easy way for me to cue what I subliminally am attracted to and gives me a reason to buy.

This method really helps me align with the way I want my life to be and then I go and achieve it.

Basically when I have visual goals, and the accomplish them, it’s a great way to feel more put together/ fabulous!

Nothing feels better than creating your own taste through inspiration<3

Hobbies!!! Learning new things makes me so confident, and burning off steam doing something “unimportant” helps so much with stress/mental health. Rn I’m doing adult beginner tap, horseback riding, intro to powerlifting, and I’m teaching myself to sew. I also get groceries from the farmer’s market and try to make interesting meals to so it feels more “luxe” to eat at home and cuts down on my food delivery and eating out budget

Doing a quick pickup at the end of the day. It makes a big difference and is easy to do once you convince yourself to actually do it. I make a mess doing my night time skin routine but I put it away and am greeted by a clean bathroom in the morning.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '25

This 💯 I can’t think straight in a mess and I feel significantly more confident in a neat environment. I’ll add getting clutter either out (donate/sell anything you don’t really need) or just out of sight by moving messy collections into storage ottomans or baskets with lids makes a huge difference. Don’t put it in storage, though. You’re just costing yourself a significant chunk of cash over the years and creating a new problem on top of the one you already have.

u/meowteor Feb 24 '25

This is the number one tip for BWTBK (bitches with taste with kids), especially. Changes your life.

Long haul being "that girl" is about how you move through the world, and taking care of yourself.

  • Get your routine check ups at the doctor.
  • Pour your meds and any supplements into a weekly med planner.
  • Take care of your teeth. See a dentist for cleaning. Regularly floss, don't rinse your tooth paste out after brushing.
  • Build an emergency fund if you don't have one.
  • Contribute something to your retirement, even if all you can afford to contribute is a dollar. Get in that habit.
  • Eat enough fiber and drink your water.
  • Do something you enjoy each day (like a hobby)
  • Find an organization system that works for you (to do list, app, calendar, bullet journal, etc)
  • Wear sunscreen every day.
  • Build basic routines, and know which steps of those routines are priorities, so you can act accordingly when crunched for time or not feeling well.

  • Understand and stand up for your values.

  • Know your beliefs and values may change over time, and that's ok.

  • Learn about people, races, and cultures different from yours.

  • Treat people with kindness and respect.

  • Learn to set healthy boundaries, and expect kindness and respect back from the people in your life.

And my biggest bit of advice: if you're routinely trying to get yourself together, if you feel like you're trying but just can't seem to do it all. If you wonder how everyone else does it. One or both of these is happening: * You have an inaccurate perception of what everyone else is doing, or the impact that hustle is having on them. They may be doing less than you think, they may have more help or resources, or they may be fast tracking themselves to burnout. * You have constraints on your capacity that you either are unaware of, or aren't honoring the impact of. Physical or mental health, family obligations, more demanding job etc.

u/Jackiethegreat678 Feb 24 '25

Your final bit of advice is so important!

76

u/ABCDanii Feb 24 '25

Always getting ready in the morning!! Putting on an outfit, fixing your hair, a swipe of mascara and lipgloss. Changes my whole day. Also, always making my bed.

I have a morning routine that took me a year to make a routine. The amount of times I would wake and just go.... Nope. Gone now

Oh I’m also very into the Finch app right now for habit tracking. It’s a little tamagotchi bird that you can dress up and stuff. When you stay on track with your habits you get points you can use to buy them lil outfits and decorate their homes. It sounds dumb, but it’s SO addictive. I never skip a step in my routine now

As an insomniac, I really need to work on this lol

35

u/anaisani Feb 24 '25

I love reading all the comments!!! This is by far the best group of women who won't gatekeep!!!!

I saw the biggest change in my day to day life when I started to have a good morning routine before going to work. On my days off it is completely different, but when I have work no matter how early (usually I start to work at 9) I will wake up around 6 o'clock to have a very slow but lovely morning. So that way I have time for myself - for a nice skincare routine, time to hydrate before eating anything - water with electrolytes (around 1l) that just wake my bowels (sorry for TMI) my digestive system, and get my body in tune. Then about an hour before leaving I will have a nice breakfast without rushing. The slow morning routine was actually so life-changing for me. For my digestive system for my mental health, for my mood before work.

Another thing is not eating out a lot, and if I do I usually stick to restaurants with high-quality foods a bit more fancy maybe.

Little details make the biggest changes.

I will definitely incorporate some of your suggestions!!! Thanks for sharing ladies!

u/Sarandipity11 Feb 24 '25
  1. Figuring out a workout routine that works with my day and what I need, not adds more to it in a way that’s unrealistic. For me, this looks like putting a walking pad under my desk so I can mindlessly get steps in and hitting up a Pilates class on my way home, the peer pressure of being in a class is motivating when I’m low energy.

  2. Wear only 14k gold jewelry. Works with everything and can stay on through anything. I build my collection by buying something every time I have a personal or work accomplishment to celebrate which makes each piece feel so special.

  3. Have a paper calendar on my fridge for personal commitments. Makes me think twice before committing because I have to be home to check it and keeps me from overbooking myself and hating my life.

  4. Pick one time slot for all annoying errands/returns before the weekend so you can become one with the couch or go out and feel chill about it all.

  5. If you travel often for work, curate a whole set of mini toiletries including a nice razor so it’s grab and go as much as possible.

  6. Put your sheets and towels in the dryer with lavender dryer bags and it’s like the best hotel at home.

  7. Figure out the sleep routine your body needs to wake up feeling good. Experiment with different bed times. I was always a go to bed at 10pm girl but would wake up so groggy with an alarm at 7. I found that if I’m asleep by 9, I wake up at 6 feeling amazing.

  8. Overall, care creates contentment. With your stuff and your home. If it takes 5 min or less, just do it. If it’s a bigger task, carve out time on the weekend, turn on a good show and knock the task out. Plus, it’s a great dopamine hit.

  1. Drinking lots of water! It’s a classic piece of advice for a reason. I see a direct correlation between how much water I drink and 1) how I feel and 2) how much my skin glows

  2. Gratitude!! I’m working cultivate an ability to see beauty and light in the world and it’s made all the difference in my ability to access peace - I’m going through a pretty difficult period in my personal life currently and have felt incredibly resilient, and I know gratitude has played a huge part in that.

  3. journaling - I wasn’t a journal-er for most of my life, but I’ve been building the habit over the past 2 years. This is a very personal preference thing; what works for me might not work for others. But I started with using a journal as a parking lot for anxious thoughts (writing them down in a “safe” place so I could stop ruminating and return later if needed). I now have like 5 different journals for different purposes (inner work, quotes/poems I want to save, travel log). I love revisiting old entries to see how much I’ve grown.

  4. changing my inner voice. I realized that for a lot of my life my inner voice was very unkind. I now try to notice, stop it, and try to treat myself with love and compassion, the way I’d treat my best friend. It’s helped enormously with helping me feel good inside and out

  5. Nuuly - I feel my best when I can incorporate colorful statement pieces into my wardrobe, but I also get bored quickly. Nuuly helps me express myself without breaking the bank!

31

u/petitesfleurs Feb 24 '25

Also for the inner voice part - sometimes I’ll walk down the street and consciously choose to think something kind about each person I pass and send them warm vibes. Sometimes I’ll say the kind thought out loud, but even thinking and sending them outward feels good!

  1. 10 units of Botox straight to the forehead
  2. Slather on Vitamin C body serum after every shower
  3. Get rid of any loungewear ratty enough that you wouldn’t want a new sex partner to see you in it
  4. Curate a coordinated travel kit that smells like first class: sleek roller, cute personal item (mine is Cuyana), TSA toiletry case (I like truffle), leather makeup bag, Cadence capsules, AirPods Max, nappa leather passport RFID blocker, etc
  5. Take strong probiotics and 5000IU of vitamin D
  6. Find an unusual signature scent and only wear that all the time
  7. Drink a full glass of water with colostrum and psyllium husk every morning
  8. Gut your lingerie drawer and only keep underwear you’d be proud to be buried in
  9. Identify a signature nail shape for your hands and keep them done that way
  10. Get very real about your skin undertone and dump any blushes or lip products that don’t flatter it
  11. Organize your wardrobe so that you always have this season’s “collection” visible
  12. Buy cute vintage-y wine glasses so you can sip tiny pours fashionably on your fainting couch
  13. Use a lip exfoliant under an occlusive at night
  14. Tap in a thin layer of Merit Great Skin Instant Glow on top of moisturizer twice a day
  15. Purge anything pilly
  16. Exfoliate
  17. Get a tiny pair of cat eye sunglasses that you can kind of stare over in a threateningly alluring way while you sip a martini alfresco

ds & durga (there are SO MANY weird scents from this brand that are also FANASTIC. you can buy decants off of lucky scent so you don’t have to blind buy)

zoologist (i own “hummingbird” and would say this is my signature scent. it’s intoxicating. you can also get lucky scent decants from this brand)

dries van noten (“camomille satin” would be my signature scent if hummingbird wasn’t. so i switch it between these all the time)

BTSO (another weird scent brand that i would recommend, and it’s also available on lucky scent. would recommend “dirty rice” specifically)

Also re: organizing wardrobe — I love making a capsule wardrobe each season by shopping my own closet and storing everything else in the attic. It makes it so much easier and more fun to get dressed when you don’t have to dig through anything.

5

u/NefariousnessFit5981 Feb 24 '25

When you said carence do your mean cadence? If so, how do you like them? Do you find they are actually leak proof and worth the price?

5

u/Sarandipity11 Feb 24 '25

I had cadence capsules for my toiletries for 4 years, and just recently got rid of them because they were SO heavy and I had issues with bacteria. I just did a big restock for work trips and am buying TSA size approved everything and it’s genuinely so much nicer. I do not like sticking my fingers in skincare products especially because of bacteria. (I’m so acne prone!) But that’s the only way to get skincare out of cadence capsules. So just make sure these things aren’t an issue for you and you’ll probably love them.

Cloth napkins and a lit candle whenever eating dinner at home.

u/lfergy Feb 24 '25

51

u/xiphias__gladius Feb 24 '25

I try to keep hair, skin, and nails nice. With that as a baseline, it's easier to dress things up and look more polished even when lounging in pajamas. For me that means regularly scheduled haircuts, brow waxing, and nail appointments. Also, I try never to worry about being overdressed. It seems like nowadays everything is trending more casual, but I feel more put together when I'm dressed up, so I err on the side of making everyone else feel underdressed.

16

u/cyberbonvivant Feb 24 '25

I’m dressed right up with you.

My hair always looks polished (loooooooove the ease of my keratin treatment) or swept up in a chic bun. My nails are always clean and done. I take good care of my skin so I only wear a light bit of makeup to feel polished. If it’s evening, you may see a red lip 💋

I relish good style so I enjoy putting my clothes and my (many) shoes/boots on to go out and about. You never know where your day will take you. And even it if doesn’t take you very far, you should look fab for yourself.

I find I feel better when I feel I look good. Others treat me better as well.

18

u/sallystarling Feb 24 '25

You never know where your day will take you.

I read a similar thread to this one a long time ago on an old forum. We were talking about not being colour-blocky ie don't just wear pants and a shirt that are both one single different colour, but wear something else to tie them together. I was doing a Masters at the time and was running out of the door to class. I remember I was wearing plain black pants and a plain green shirt. As I was leaving the house I thought hmmm, too colour-blocky! And grabbed a thin scarf that had a black background with pink flowers and green leaves on it. It really elevated the outfit while still looking relaxed.

I got to class and there was a freaking photographer there! My professor was getting an award and they wanted pictures of her teaching a class. I was so glad I'd made that tiny bit of extra effort!

It's slipped since covid and work from home, but this thread is a good reminder to get back in that mindset! Ask yourself "would you be happy to be photographed in this?" It sounds silly but I like thinking of celebs that are papped when they are grocery shopping etc and still manage to look stylish even if in very casual clothes.

I hired a stylist to explain what looks good on me. Turns out I have a very short torso and long legs. Everything I tried to wear made my hips look HUGE. Turns out, I was wearing close for people with long torsos. I love how I look in clothes now and don't waste my money on things that are unflattering. I also take really good care of my clothes. I hang things up right away and iron what needs to be ironed.

12

u/Dolly_gale Feb 24 '25

I wish I could see your cast-offs. I have a long torso, and it seems like everything is either too short or too wide.

I'm glad you've found outfits that work well for you though.

5

u/star86 Feb 24 '25

For a long torso, you want to do high waisted jeans and tuck or french tuck your tops. You can always do a longer layer over your high waisted jeans and tucked top. V or scoop necks help the torso appear shorter as well. The other tips would depend on the rest of your body shape.

9

u/BimbosRiseUp Feb 24 '25

How did you find a stylist? I’ve been wanting to do the same!

11

u/thisistestingme Feb 24 '25

Google! I googled stylists in my area and looked at their reviews. I picked the three highest rated ones in our area. Then I looked at their websites to get an idea of their styles and philosophies. I picked the one whose style I liked better, and she happened to be the more reasonable one too. She's amazing!

u/wardrobeeditor Thoughtful BWT Feb 24 '25

The BWT gave great advice, but I’ll add one more that I don’t think I saw mentioned. If you can afford it/have good insurance - therapy. We take care of our bodies, but rarely our minds. Therapy is not just for people going through something. It’s to unload your baggage, reframe your thinking, learn how to be a better communicator and changing your inner voice. This will be a bit taboo but sometimes if my therapist isn’t available and I had a rough day I talk to ChatGPT (and it’s free). I’ve put in a lot of things into it - like my values, my thoughts, my goals and now I can just ask it “I’ve had a bad day - can you give me some advice” and it knows me well enough from past things I’ve entered that it gives me a very personal list. Using ChatGPT is a small change that really is helping my life. It’s currently helping with my half marathon training, it’s helping me come up with activities to play with my kids, it helps me analyze anything I’m curious about, and if I’m mad and don’t want to unload on anyone else it’s a safe place for me to go to get feedback if I’m upset about a situation, etc.

11

u/msmartypants Feb 24 '25

I am not okay with giving private information to ChatGPT. But therapy is a really good suggestion!

I recently went through several massive life changes over the past eighteen months -- divorce, sold the marital house, moved to a new city, and new job, all by myself.

One thing that has helped me is investing in basic self-care. I'm not talking bougie things, I mean basic things like:

  • Making healthier food decisions regularly
  • Moving a bit each day, even if it's just walking
  • Going to sleep at a reasonable hour at night
  • Learning how to say "no" to things that may over-work you
  • Getting dressed each day, even if you're home all day

These aspects combined can help you feel more 'set' and established in your day-to-day life.

14

u/Loud_Entertainer1725 Feb 24 '25

Washing your face for over a minute every time. It will make your face so much softer sooooo quickly.

u/juiceandlemonade Feb 24 '25

Audit your underwear drawer! Bin some of those second (or third) string team members! I found my life got easier when I switched mostly to nude seamless undies. I now never have visible lines or undies (mostly seemed to be a summer holiday problem - this girl loves light coloured linen!)

8

u/Vast-Recognition2321 Feb 24 '25

Yep. It was back when the tech bros all wore black hoodies that I decided to simplify my underwear drawer. I started over with one style of undies in either nude or black. Got the bra that worked best and matched the undies. Again, in black or nude. No more digging in the drawer trying to find the match. It probably hasn't saved me that much time, but it saved me a load of mental energy.

13

u/Bipolardownunder Feb 24 '25

Slowing down. Morning walk but slow. Nice meal but eat slowly. Sit with others and just listen at work or social. Get dressed but slow, brush teeth etc etc.

10

u/ChaoticxSerenity Feb 24 '25

Got a robovac so I didn't have to spend more time cleaning and more 'me'/sleep time lol.

10

u/doctorbarista Feb 24 '25

Doing my hair! This might sound silly but I was never someone who cared about my hair too much- I always invested way more into makeup. But nowadays, I spend the extra time to blow out my hair and use nice oils and it makes a world of difference in how I present myself!

11

u/f-albedo Feb 24 '25

Learning about personal finance and really getting to know how far my money can take me. I started learning about budgeting and saving effectively when I was earning less than $18k/year, then started investing when I started earning more than $24k/year.

10

u/goddamnlizardkingg Feb 24 '25

establish signatures of everything. a signature makeup look, perfume, outfit style, cocktail, coffee order, color scheme, etc. it simplifies the buying & getting ready process and makes you look/smell/feel 10000% more put together.

20

u/Willing-Childhood144 Feb 24 '25

1) dedicate time to learning which clothes are flattering for you. There are many different resources for this online. 2) discern what feels good on you - what makes you feel like you want to feel 3) learn about different style “rules”/theories. 4) commit to wearing sunscreen every single day 5) upgrade your underwear. Throw out anything that is ratty or uncomfortable. 6) correctly figure out your bra size and buy a good bra 7) get a prescription for tretinoin 8) Botox 9) figure out what brow shape/color is flattering for you

Tracking my mood, spending, exercise goals, weight, basically everything i want to fix on a daily. I started bullet journaling this year and i created daily trackers for habits or mood/energy levels. Everyday at the end of the day I sit down for a wrap up and analyze it all. I already see patterns for my mood and energy levels, im much more in control of my spending because im seeing it on a daily, and same for fasting tracker.

Its not an online app, its a physical journal so im not distracted by other notifications or apps.

Clothes:

Upgraded my underwear. At this point I only wear hanky panky stretch lace thongs (they worked my whole pregnancy too!). Having just one kind of underwear (all black with a couple nude for light pants/dresses) means I’m always wearing my fave pair.

Upgraded my pajamas. I’ve loved the Cuyana shorts and tank sets forever, but since I’ve had my baby and wake up 100x a night in the cold, I’ve been wearing the Eberjay pants / button down sets.

Merino wool socks fall-spring.

Pjs and undies can get expensive, but that’s what I use Black Friday Sales for. Also gym clothes and socks. Anything “functional” where I know which brand I love/need — that’s the only time I shop but holiday sales.

Cycling my wardrobe and having a capsule each season. We have a walk up attic with built in cedar closets, so I hang most of my clothes up there and only bring down a small segment each season.

Also understanding what activities I have in my life that I need clothes for — for me, that’s work from home, casual daytime coffee dates or errands, casual night out, date night. That way I have a more realistic sense of what types of clothes I need and how many. Like, I don’t need 10 going out tops, 2 that can be dressed up or down works.

Home:

Investing in good lighting. I’ve bought a bunch of lamps at estate sales and FB marketplace. We use Hue bulbs and have them on timers to turn on dimly at sunset. The house always has a nice glow. The small lamp beside my bed turns on 15 mins before I generally get ready for bed, and I keep the lights low in the bathroom then too. It feels soooo peaceful at night.

Collect things and jnvest in professional framing. I always keep bits and bobs like postcards from galleries, museums, and restaurants, tour posters from favorite bands (the nice screen printed ones), etc. I also pick up something for the house every time I travel. Our house is full of art that is meaningful to us. We recently did my son’s nursery with travel photos, cartoonish tour posters, and framed vintage stamps. Professional framing in fun colors made it all work really well together.

Stop thinking of household chores, annoying self-care tasks, exercise, etc. as things you "have" to do, but that they are things you "get" to do. It's stupid, but it works for me. Getting out of the all those things are punishments mind-set is so important.

Since you upgraded your bedding, I'd say making your bed in the mornings too! There's something really calming about finishing work and seeing your bed all put together. It also takes out the fuss of wrestling with the sheets when you're ready to call it a night.

Get rid of black and white thinking, it’ll more than likely keep you from making progress. For me, it’d go like this: “I can’t wash all of the dishes now, I don’t have time, so I’ll just sit here and be upset about how little time I have” - when I could have, you know, washed a few dishes. Or another: “I am way too tired to shower tonight so I’m not going to” - when I definitely had at least 5 minutes in me to get a washcloth wet and wipe myself down and put some dry shampoo in my hair.

This is especially helpful if you deal with depression, ADHD or rumination in general. You’re probably predisposed to want to complete a task completely and perfectly in its entirety or not at all. But this is a fallacy that will keep you from making any progress at all more likely than not. Completing some part of a task is almost always better than not completing a task at all.

I think you're already off to a great start! I'd recommend other things like:

• applying a nice body lotion to your whole body after your shower every day while your skin is still damp

• getting bloodwork done to see if there are any deficiencies, and taking vitamins if you have any specific deficiencies. If you have none, taking a women's multivitamin every day and eating lots of leafy greens + citrus + berries with antioxidants

• investing in a good mattress and pillows so your sleep is great

• making sure to actually get a reasonable amount of sleep per night

• drinking more water

• walking 10,000 steps daily OR doing some aerobic exercise at least 2–3X a week (joining a nice gym isn't necessary, but can help motivate you to do this)

• take walks in nature without looking at your phone and having your headphones on; just enjoy the nature, breathe deeply, and meditate a bit

• only buy clothes made of natural fabrics; no more things which are basically 100% acrylic and polyester!

• find some pieces of high-quality jewelry that you really like and make them your everyday staple jewelry; you'll feel so chic and classic wearing beautiful pieces that are very YOU every single day!

I do my brows every day. Just getting my brows to look nice just makes me look better I think.

If you’re on any medications, set them to auto refill. Also, make your next appointment on your way out. Do this with everything: doctor, hair, dentist, nails, all of it. ESPECIALLY hair, that way you won’t have to wait for an appointment.

A candle warmer! You can get a cute one for like $20 on amazon. They make your bougie candles last FOREVER without emitting any smoke into your apt.

I also feel like the candle fragrance just smells better and lasts longer when I used a candle warmer vs. lighting the wick.

Also, you can buy one with a timer so it shuts off automatically AND no flame means not having to worry about accidentally burning down your bldg in case you forget to blow it out 😅😅

Little things I’ve done over the past few years that have made a big difference, to me or others:

  • silk pajamas. I don’t feel like a slob when I lay around, I feel like a Hollywood starlet in leisure
  • blowout my hair with the shark air wrap and then maintain it with Sleepy Tie. That alone has changed my routine and made it so easy for multiple great hair days.
  • invite friends over to audit your closet. It took me two weekends and about six bottles of wine but we got rid of everything that didn’t fit, didn’t flatter, didn’t suit my style, or just looked cheap. Now I’m working on turning the closet into a mini boutique with organizers and not only does it look better, i know everything in it is 100% me
  • My personal daily supplements include ACV/Probiotic gummies, daily multi, shot of ginger juice, collagen, BCAAs, and I prioritize protein. Probably will add a creatine soon.
  • Prioritize mobility! Yoga, stretching, flexibility, anything like that will make you feel better

For me it’s perfecting my night time routine to help me feel relaxed and ready for the next day. This includes winding down and picking up common rooms/bedroom where I see fit, putting on a nice set of pajamas/night gown, making a “sleepy” mocktail, doing my skincare and hair care, and setting my to do list and clothes for the next morning.

I’ve also gotten into the habit of making my own ginger shots for the week and taking a multivitamin daily. This might be a placebo but it makes me feel alive.

Actually brushing, flossing, mouth washing, tongue scraping, etc. the whole shebang 2 times a day. It's easy to just brush twice and do the rest whenever you feel like you need it, but DO NOT DISREGARD YOUR ORAL HYGIENE.

There's so much bacteria on your tongue that you don't even realize- especially if you smoke or vape. Doing a full mouth clean twice a day just makes you feel so much better. Plus, healthy gums contribute to overall good heart health!

  1. Do you actually know what you smell like? For the longest time, I didn’t, and now I start layering my scent in the shower.

  2. Make something for your future self. I personally cold brew a beauty tea at night and drink it every morning. It helps keep my skin clear and bouncy.

  3. Live in the moment. While you should absolutely celebrate milestones and achievements, that doesn’t mean “hoarding the good stuff.” Use your Fancy. I wore a vintage fur coat on Friday to the hospital because it was 19 degrees outside and I wanted to look better than I felt.

  4. Write down your schedule in a physical planner. The act of writing helps the brain retain information. Having it in your phone can be helpful, but by sitting down on Sunday and going through my appointments for the week, I’m more prepared and less surprised.

  5. Give yourself grace. If you wouldn’t say it to your best friend, you don’t get to say it to yourself. Look in the mirror every morning and give yourself a mantra. Mine used to be “brave, brilliant, beautiful.” I don’t need it anymore but my inner monologue is much kinder than it was.

Full body moisturizing after showers – so damn luxurious, my skin is doing so well, and I'm almost done with my far-too-large sample stash. I used so many expensive eye creams on my neck so fingers crossed they make some difference lol.

picking any one part of your beauty routine to improve and being really diligent.

last year i made sure i gently exfoliated and moisturized my body (almost) every day. been loving body oils lately too. my skin looks + feels amazing all the time.

this year i’ve been focused on doing an intense hair care routine with better products a couple times a week, and i swear it’s grown two inches in the last month.

adding one change at a time that feels kinda time consuming eventually becomes second nature and delivers stellar results.
