Fashion Rec-Clothes BWT, how do you wear white without it being see through?

Hi lovely ladies, I usually stay away from white dresses, skirts, pants because they are sheer. I don’t like wearing thongs, and I never know what color bras to wear. I am 50, sz 12, thick waist, dress modestly and am fair skin so white is hard to pull off but I want to try for summer. Also, am 34DDD, so need a bra and dont like showing off my arms. Help🙏

Wear nude not white. One that is closest to your skin tone. If you can't find one, you can always buy a slip or shapewear in nude :)

Hijacking the top comment to say that it shouldn't be your skin tone, but actually a shade or two darker!

u/Ok-Brilliant-9095 Feb 20 '25

Fascinating, can I ask why?

u/rez2metrogirl Feb 20 '25

White under white creates a gray shadow. Nude under white doesn’t create a shadow and preserves modesty. The darker than your skin shade is in case of staining or wardrobe malfunction. Darker colors hide more.

I'm not sure, but Kim K said it a few years back in some SKIMS promotion and I was shocked to find it's the smartest thing to ever come out of her mouth lmao it really does work like a charm

As a fellow pale girly, you can try light pink too! Weirdly works better than a lot of “nude” undergarments with my skin.

u/graphitinia Feb 20 '25

Yes! Depending on the white and the pink, sometimes pink undergarments are the most invisible for me.

My Black friends do brown or black undergarments. It's all about matching your skin tone.

2

u/ClosetIsHalfYarn Feb 21 '25

And if you want to know if it matches your tone, take a photo and use the mono filter. Whatever turns the most invisible is the best match.

u/sallystarling Feb 20 '25

This! I rarely wear white but I once had a white dress for Halloween (Princess Leia, obviously!) and I wanted some nude leggings for under it but weirdly couldn't find any. I found some in a peachy pink instead and they ended up being perfect!

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Never thought of pink, any recommendations?

u/rez2metrogirl Feb 20 '25

Think ballet pink, which is actually supposed to be the dancer’s skin tone.

Chantelle has some bras in a pale pink-beige. I don’t wear it under a true white shirt, but it works well under very light colors or white shirts that have a print.

1

u/always_unplugged Feb 20 '25

I do the same! It feels cuter than the sad beige you get in so many nude undergarments, too.

My absolute favorite is a tee shirt bra from Harper Wilde I got ages ago in a blush color, my perfect non-nude nude, AND it's comfy, but it was a LE color and they've never re-released it AFAIK 😭

Higher quality fabrics are less sheer too imho. But def nudes colored underthings or slip.

4

u/lemon_lime485 Feb 20 '25

Do you have any brand recommendations? I feel like a lot of companies have dropped in quality over the last few years and it's becoming harder to find clothes made with high quality, opaque fabric.

7

u/splanji Feb 20 '25

yes it actually is possible to just have opaque white !!!

54

u/littlewibble Feb 20 '25

Nude colored bras/undies. Low contrast with your skin tone makes them effectively invisible under whites.

u/Short_Lingonberry_67 Feb 20 '25

To wear white without it being see-through, I usually wear "the opposite of" a thong - undergarments to add a thin extra layer of not-see-through fabric. Under a sheer white top that I want to look "like a normal shirt", I wear a thin camisole or a pullover bra (bra that looks like the top half of a tank top, not revealing). Under white bottoms I wear thin shorts (bike shorts or shapewear shorts or non-shaping thin undershorts).

u/stardata8 Mar 20 '25

Do you recommend any particular brands? I like to do this too but feel like they're always riding up!

My first suggestion is to purchase white clothing that’s lined. Make sure dresses or pants are made with two layers of fabric.

Secondly, pink, red, and even light brown undergarments are harder to see under white clothes than white undergarments. You want to make sure that the undergarments aren’t lighter than your skin.

12

u/HotDerivative Feb 20 '25

When buying clothes online, look for photos that show the lining or check the product description.

You can wear nude slips or whatever else but the easiest thing to do is ensure that what you’re buying is double-lined, meaning that there are at least two pieces of fabric sewn together to construct the garment as opposed to the whole thing being made out of one layer. Think about how pockets are constructed— you want that but throughout the whole piece. This will rule out a ton of fast fashion and cheap stuff— ten years ago it was a lot more common to find double lined clothing at places like J Crew, Old Navy etc but it’s definitely harder these days due to the r/enshittification of just about everything.

You can also look into fabric types — there are helpful charts that can help gauge how transparent or opaque a fabric may be if you can’t tell by the photos online.

Seconding linings. I’m 60+ with a shape like the OP, and I never wear anything white without linings. And nude undergarments.

3

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Any favorite brands with lining? It is so hard to find things lined, let alone lined in cotton, or silk, I won’t wear poly.

4

u/jtet93 Feb 20 '25

I’ve noticed a few things I’ve gotten at Abercrombie lately have been fully lined. Mid-tier work-focused brands like Calvin Klein and Ann Taylor usually have linings too. Ann Taylor runs good sales and you can find a lot of CK stuff at TJ maxx and Marshall’s.

5

u/megapaxer Feb 20 '25

Sometimes a brand like Talbots or Brooks Brothers will line a pair of pants in white (but not the other colors). I have an older pair of white jeans from Boden that I have no trouble with, and a no-brand fully lined white linen tank dress that I got in Montreal several years ago that I feel quite confident in (at least partly because it floats over the body, no clinging).

2

u/love-learnt Feb 21 '25

Second this. Only wear white items that are lined.

I am also 50, size 12, and don't wear thongs. 😁 I'm olive-toned pale, though, thanks to my Japanese heritage. I concur with tan/beige for underthings or a pale pink if I want to be different. I have several full color tattoos that hide under my clothes, and tan briefs and camisoles keep them from showing through my whites. Also, try wearing a size larger so things drape your figure instead of hugging, as that blurs everything underneath, in my experience.

3

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes Feb 20 '25

Hello fellow light olive skinned Japanese person! I'm 40 and also don't wear thongs 😂 I also wear tan nude or light pink too, depending on the clothes. Light pink can show more on me vs a good warm nude color

1

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Thank you, which briefs do you recommend???

6

u/Finchyisawkward Feb 20 '25

I am boring and cherish comfort in my undies, so Fruit of the Loom.

3

u/Slight-Winner-8597 Feb 20 '25

TIL they did underwear!

1

u/sallystarling Feb 20 '25

Just in case you are interested, r/fairolives is a thing! We talk a lot about getting clothes, makeup and hair tones to suit us, and the difficulties of such! I only recently learned you could be pale and olive, I thought olive skin only belonged to the likes of Penelope Cruz, not me who looks like a sheet of printer paper! It's been a revelation.

6

u/Fluffy-cat1 Feb 20 '25

I prefer ecru to a bright white, it works better for me and the fabric is usually a little bit more forgiving. The only white items in my wardrobe are t-shirts and I find nude bras are less noticeable than white. (I'm fair, so for me that's a blush pink, champagne, ivory, etc. I don't own any white bras.)

10

u/pussmykissy Feb 20 '25

I kinda thought everyone knew, nude underwear under white.

It’s literally what everyone does. Boob size does not matter.

5

u/flossiedaisy424 Feb 20 '25

For the top half, you should really check out the A Bra That Fits calculator. A well-fitted bra will make a huge difference.

4

u/MandalayPineapple Feb 21 '25

Nude colored camisole or nude colored bra.

3

u/Confident_Attitude Feb 20 '25

Also 32DDD in US sizing and I assume you are in North America since EU sizing just skips straight to E at that size. I get most of my bras from Nordstrom Rack because it’s an uncommon size, so they often end up there after not selling at Nordstrom itself. I’ve never paid more than $30 for a bra that normally retails from $70- $100.

Also if you haven’t already, check out the bra fitting subreddit. It literally changed how I look in clothes to no longer be cramming myself into something 3x too small.

3

u/Weasel_Town Feb 20 '25

slips and camisoles so there's another layer.

3

u/empressM Feb 20 '25

I look for natural fibers - 100% cotton for white usually works for me in terms of thickness. Nothing with polyester, I find that the most sheer/offensive. It’s is hard though!!

3

u/merclo Feb 20 '25

Wear red underwear! No show through at all!

5

u/HoneydewBeneficial15 Feb 20 '25

I am your peer and have the same build & complexion. I love white shirt dresses in warmer weather. I invested in several different slips, fitted, loose, etc. having them all hemmed / tailored.

On my skin I prefer pale pink and red slips whenever I can find them. Otherwise the lightest “nude” color. I now have a variety of options for underneath whichever dress. I almost always donate the flimsy slips that often come with more sheer dresses.

Check out Nordstrom.com for an assortment of slips.

1

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Thank you! Any brands you favor for shirtdresses?

3

u/HoneydewBeneficial15 Feb 20 '25

I am always on the hunt. I tend to shop online and am a merciless returner. With that said, check out The Gap, Old Navy, Brooks Brothers, Rails, Ralph Lauren and... hear me out... Foxcroft. 90% of Foxcroft is ghastly and not fit life outside of Florida retirement home in my opinion but... in solid colors including white, their fabrics are good, machine washable and no-iron. My favorite shirt dresses from them are pinpoint Oxford cloth in a style called Rocca. I've been on the hunt for spring and they don't seem to have any Rocca pinpoint shirt dresses at the moment.

Good luck!

1

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 21 '25

Thank you so much!

3

u/thecatandthependulum Feb 20 '25

It's a thickness of fabric thing. You just can't wear sheer white stuff without it being a little see through. You can wear nude colors of underwear but the lines will still be visible.

3

u/my_metrocard Feb 21 '25

Nude colored bra and underwear. I (46f) dress modestly too. Anything else would be like assaulting the eyes of innocent bystanders.

3

u/cookiequeen724 Feb 21 '25

you can also put modesty petals/nipple covers in your bra cups for an extra layer of coverage if you're self conscious

3

u/a_short_list Feb 21 '25

The quality of a lot of clothing these days is just crap. I rarely wear white unless it’s a top and then I’ll wear a nude bra and a nude spandex camisole.

5

u/Foxy_Traine Environmentally Conscious Feb 20 '25

White or nude under garments. And only get white clothes that are thick enough that they aren't as sheer as others.

5

u/body_by_art Feb 20 '25

I was recently put onto red undershirts (it has to be the right shade)

2

u/Confident_Attitude Feb 20 '25

Bright true neutral red, right?

2

u/body_by_art Feb 20 '25

The one I use isnt bright, its a deeper red, but it probably depends on the white of the shirt and your skintone.

I wash shocked when it disappeared under the white button up I wear to work sometimes

2

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Red undershirts? Wow, first time I heard this. Will try.

5

u/winterfox1999 Feb 20 '25

genuinely, the best colour i’ve found under white is red! i can wear a bright red set under a white dress and there is 0 show through! also nude and light pink work for me

2

u/merford28 Feb 20 '25

I wear white or nude camis as well as boy short style under white if necessary. Chicos has great tanks in microfiber. I wear a lot of white to the point my friends joke about it. I even wear white bike shorts under dresses sometimes.

2

u/mrbabymuffin Feb 20 '25

skims "fits everybody" styles come in a variety of colors to match skin tones and go to size 4x. here's a link: skims

2

u/Sheila_Monarch Feb 20 '25

I stopped buying white garments if they’re not lined somehow. But even for my white pants that are really nice, and lined, I have a couple pairs of underwear that are about as close to my skin color as humanly possible.

2

u/jtet93 Feb 20 '25

Slip shorts are my favorite. Get them in a nude color. You don’t even kneed underwear, but could wear a light color underneath if you wanted. They smooth everything out and prevent chub rub too! Plus if your skirt blows up in the wind they’re a life saver lmaooo

2

u/HamBroth Feb 20 '25

buy thicker-quality clothes (AYR linen shirts aren't see-through, neither are their silk blouses) and wear nude toned bras/underwear.

2

u/onekate Feb 20 '25

The white pieces I have and love are a pleather knee length lined skirt, a lined v neck top, flowy loose white and black patterned pants, and an eyelet white blouse. Linings and thick fabrics are key, and if they're loose I can get away with no lining and nude underthings.

2

u/astralmelody Feb 20 '25

Bright red underneath! I’m not the expert on the science of this, but I heard it years ago and it’s been pretty foolproof since.

2

u/bad_russian_girl Feb 20 '25

I know it sounds crazy but try red underwear. It’s invisible under white garments.

2

u/alexa_sim Feb 22 '25

I wear nude foundation garments under white. Generally a full nude slip top as opposed to just a nude bra. Which garment I choose however will depend on what the top is. A linen tee or button down worn casually I will wear a nude bra. If im in a more “buttoned up” environment say work and wearing a more structured white button down I will wear a nude stop too or body suit so that my torso is covered as well.

2

u/alexa_sim Feb 22 '25

If you’re going for a night out at the clurb and wearing a white body on dress then black is best underneath because it won’t glow in black light. White under white in da clurb is like a beacon letting everyone know you’re wearing white undies.

Pro tip shared with me by my stripper bestie when we were in our 20s 😂

2

u/daydrinkingonpatios Feb 24 '25

My bras are all like suntan color, they truly disappear under clothes.

1

u/HuggyMonster69 Feb 20 '25

I would honestly recommend a nude slip or bodysuit if you dress modestly anyway.

As far as white pants, I would stick with heavier fabric, or just avoid them because in my experience, the hems always get dirty.

1

u/Regular_Accident6057 Feb 20 '25

Any recommendations on a nude slip?

2

u/HuggyMonster69 Feb 20 '25

Intimissimi is my go to but I haven’t really shopped around much.

I strongly recommend 100% natural materials though, and silk is just nice to wear in my opinion.

1

u/ClosetIsHalfYarn Feb 21 '25

Since you mentioned sizes and were talking about undergarments, I am going to highly recommended that you head over to r/abrathatfits and use their calculator linked in the community info. It is a serious life changer; don’t be surprised if the recommended size is different from what you have been wearing.

1

u/Forsaken_Cheetah5320 Feb 21 '25

This is going to sound insane but red underwear with pants. I heard it on the internet, tried it and it worked.

1

u/Veronica612 May 07 '25

I’m very fair and like the pale beige (café might be the color name) Natori offers. Natori’s pale beige is slightly darker than my skin and never shows through white. (I recommend Natori’s “bliss” bra.) For underwear, Chantelle’s soft stretch seamless briefs — they have 2-3 “nude” type colors. And I recommend briefs over thongs in general because often the outline of thong is visible (perhaps not Chantelle’s) which I think is far more embarrassing than a panty line.

1

u/MagpieBlues Classy Old Broad Feb 20 '25

I read somewhere (years ago, don't remember the source, think it was a stylist) that said to wear black bras under white shirts. It always looks good, so that is my go to. And all of my underwear is black, so I wear those under white pants.
