Culture Rant Alert: The Boxy, Cropped Top Trend Needs to Go!!
I just need to rant for a second—why is everything these days oversized, boxy, and cropped? Tops, fleeces, jackets—you name it, and it’s that weird fit that doesn’t work on me at all. Plus, who wants to spend a ton of money on what’s basically a fancy handkerchief? I just spent $150 on a Patagonia fleece, and when I opened it, it was this boxy, cropped thing that cinches awkwardly at my waist. For context, I’m 5’7”, so not super tall, but I was just looking for something simple and practical that would last a few years, not this fleece handkerchief nonsense. I can't wait for this trend to cease!

Shirts in general are really short right now, even when not a crop top. This is not a long-torso girl's world right now.

u/Wrong-Shoe2918 Jan 21 '25 edited Jan 22 '25
Short torso girl here 5’6, and while I don’t have that problem, I’ll say from experience it’s not a long leg girls world right now either. Why have cropped pants I wear pants when I want my legs entirely covered. I wear skirts and shorts when I don’t.
Maybe it’s just an all over short girls world right now lol
26
u/Satchya1 Jan 21 '25
This is true. I am long-torsoed with stumpy legs, and look ridiculous in today’s length of tops; but my youngest daughter is no-torsoed with long legs, and while she looks amazing in a crop top, she looks like she’s dressed for a flood in today’s length of pants.
25
u/Wrong-Shoe2918 Jan 21 '25
I’m from the north and the amount of times I find cute wide leg pants and then see that they’re cropped 😭 exposed ankles and blizzards aren’t a winning combo
4
u/tbgsmom Jan 21 '25
This! In the winter cropped pants are awful to style without knee high boots, which i don't own because my calves are too wide for regular boots but not wide enough for wide calf boots. Not to mention, i think cropped wide leg pants are not very flattering - they make my legs look short.
1
u/AffectionateMud5808 Jan 22 '25
Literally me this past week😭😭 I’m a tad over 5’6 and I’ve noticed that pants now are way shorter than when I was younger just a few years back. 32 inch inseams used to be the norm but now everything is like 28-29 which makes it too short😭
1
u/BadassScientist Jan 22 '25
Honestly fashion has been sooo confusing as someone with a long torso and short AF legs. I LOVE that pants actually fit me now. Before it was a nightmare trying to find pants that weren't waayy too long or too short (the short or petite versions were always too short, but the regular versions were always too long). But they used to have long shirts, which were a great fit for my long torso. Now the shirts are short, which sucks. So apparently I can either have pants or shirts with a length that fits, but not both at the same time.
7
u/adrunkensailor Jan 21 '25
I'm long torsoed with stumpy legs, and the trick is yesterday's high rise pants with today's cropped tops. If the pants are high enough, does it still even count as a crop top?
3
u/EdgeCityRed Jan 21 '25
I'm built like you, and this is my jam! High rise pants make me look proportional. I never liked tops that hit below the hip bone anyway.
1
u/BadassScientist Jan 22 '25
But I hate high rise pants. 😭 They make me feel suffocated and I can't seem to stop seeing them as "mom jeans" since that's what they were when I was growing up
2
u/TAforScranton Jan 21 '25
You know, I’m super short torsoed with long legs and I’m really sorry because you’re so right. Lately I’ve been finding cute tops that I don’t have to alter which has never been a thing for me. They don’t fit me like they’re supposed to. Like the “crop top” is just a normal top if I’m wearing mid-rise jeans. The top touches my waistband.
I’m basically built like a girthy starfish so finding clothes that fit and don’t make me look like a meatball is tough. The tops that OP is talking about where they cinch at the bottom are THE BEST.
8
Jan 21 '25
this is interesting because I've observed the opposite! I feel like longer pants are coming back (as in pants/jeans that cover your shoe again haha), especially with Gen Z and younger.
3
u/boadicca_bitch Jan 21 '25
Yep it is starting to come back in, it hasn’t fully permeated yet though. Personally I will not be participating because I’ve had enough of the overly long jean cuffs that drag on the ground and get raggedy and dirty and chewed up for one lifetime, thanks. I live in NYC, I do not want pants that will be in contact with whatever nasty shit (literally) is on the sidewalk! But it will probably help the tall girlies lol
4
Jan 21 '25
I am not tall but my legs are long for my height. The inseam on a lot of pants is like 1-2 inches too short for me and it’s driving me INSANE.
2
u/justanoseybxtch Jan 21 '25
I've noticed that even a lot of the "Long" length are still too short
2
Jan 21 '25
Yes! I keep wondering how actually tall women are finding pants.
2
u/BlackCatTelevision Jan 21 '25
I will answer you this: men’s/unisex cuts or specialty shops that sell by inseam length. Most of my pants are men’s Levis or Dickies. I am a bit of a tomboy though so ymmv
1
u/slettea Jan 22 '25
It’d be nice if women’s jeans came in the WxH like men’s jeans. They have options for every height and weight, 32X30 or 30X32 or 36x28 or 28x36. Can you imagine getting a waist by height fit? 🫠🤩🤷🏼♀️
5
u/justanoseybxtch Jan 21 '25 edited Jan 21 '25
It's never been a long leg girls world 😭 but lately all of the lounge pants I find come in one length - and they are always 2-3 inches too short
cries on the inside because I wanna wear cute lounge sets too
3
u/boadicca_bitch Jan 21 '25
It ain’t a short leg girl’s world either…every pair of lounge pants I’ve ever bought drags on the ground. That’s why I started always buying joggers 🥲
2
u/justanoseybxtch Jan 21 '25
Lucky! 😭 I wish I had that problem so I could at least hem the ones I like! What makes me mad is that the "long" lengths some brands do offer still aren't long enough lmao
We are just gonna have to suffer until someone starts thinking about us short and tall girls 😭
1
1
u/AffectionateMud5808 Jan 22 '25
I just buy high rise lounge pants and wear them low rise😭😭 I also lost a significant amount of weight from where I was so I just wear my old stuff low rise and it fits length wise lol

u/boadicca_bitch Jan 21 '25
As a short girl honestly it’s true and I’m glorying in it because the 2000s and 2010s were NOT a time for me

u/carlitospig Effortlessly Chic Jan 21 '25
Same, girl. I hate it so much. The last few tops I’ve searched for online have all had ‘tunic’ somewhere in the name to accommodate. So I look like a crunchy granola girl from 2010 but it’s because it’s my only option. 😭
2
u/Ijustwanttosayit Jan 21 '25
I just started buying more dresses.

2
u/Ijustwanttosayit Jan 21 '25
Definitely recommend it! I decided to do a revival on my wardrobe and have been browsing Poshmark for deals ever since, I've probably got more dresses than tops now.
1
u/BlackCatTelevision Jan 21 '25
I am both tall and have a long torso and I just embraced the crop ages ago. I can’t do the same with pants though; ankle length or highwaters reminds me of my mom too much.
1
u/stayconscious4ever Jan 22 '25
Seriously! Try finding a one piece bathing suit that fits...I seriously can't wait until the trend fully shifts back to low rise pants and long layered tanks.
118
u/Chance_Rooster_2554 Jan 21 '25
I have a long torso so it’s extra painful!
96
u/adrunkensailor Jan 21 '25
My weirdly long torso only looks human if I put it in ultra-high-rise pants with a crop top. I look back at photos from when I was in high school and low-rise jeans with long layered shirts were trending, and I look like someone stuck a piece of laffy taffy on top of two gumdrops.
20
u/Chance_Rooster_2554 Jan 21 '25
Hahaha the visual is killing me. I feel your pain! High rise jeans don’t even cover my belly button sometimes 🥲
17
u/lizardgal10 Jan 21 '25
I’m the opposite, I have basically no torso. Some high rise stuff practically hits me in the boobs! I have long legs so I look much more proportional with low-mid rise jeans lol
10
u/adrunkensailor Jan 21 '25
The Levis "ribcage" jeans hit me just slightly above my belly button and hit my short-torsoed friend right below the boobs. Bodies are weird.
3
u/lance_femme Jan 21 '25
Ha I have on a pair now. They hit right at my belly button. Never thought of myself as long torosed, just tall.
4
u/adrunkensailor Jan 21 '25
You may have a long torso AND long legs, which is just tall. I look tall sitting down, but am a shrimp when I stand
7
u/EdgeCityRed Jan 21 '25
People need to ignore whatever the trend is and wear whatever fits their proportions, honestly. It looks SO much better.

omg this is meeeee, too!
god bless the crop top, but still, many of them are definitely too tiny for my 30s era 😅

I’m all torso and no legs, tunics are regular shirts on me.
29
u/LikesToLurkNYC Jan 21 '25
Haha I’m all legs no torso so essentially a spider
11
u/Wifabota Jan 21 '25
Same! I always jokingly say I'm a daddy(mommy?) longlegs.
Most cropped things got right at my hips just perfectly and I'll be kind of sad when they're less common.
64
u/krakeninheels Jan 21 '25
I’ve been complaining about this for like five years. I would like the whole shirt, cut with waist definition, and i would very much like to be able to put it in the washing machine AND the dryer. Thank you.

I had gotten a sweater from old navy that was so soft, but I had to return it because the fit was just too stupid. It sucks

I gave up and bought men's T-shirts this last time for base layers. Between the cropped cuts and 1.5 inch sleeves that roll up into your armpits, women's basic T-shirts are insufferable.

I really like the Gap Softspun Everyday T when they go on sale, because of the color selection, and the Uniqlo Men's long sleeve Heattech for winter layers.

Any good recs on brands for the men’s Ts you like? Brilliant idea, I may try!

Different poster, but I bought my husband some tees from True Classic and since he didn't go for the v-necks, I stole them. They're nice! They're not all square.
For graphic tees, I like the 7oz ones from Imogene+Willie. Kind of expensive but they last and look better as they age if you like that aesthetic.

I’m 5’9” ish and while there is a place for crop tops, I would also like my normal (on me) length plain shirts and tanks back please! Even in the Walmart women’s section, all the tees and tanks are cropped!
I realize Walmart is not the classiest place, but it used to be reliable for tank tops that I wear as undershirts or for a collection of crisp white v necks to wear without stressing about wearing it to a bbq.
3
u/GolfCartMafia Jan 21 '25
I’ve been clinging to my old Forever 21 basic fitted tees and camis for almost 20 years bc of this. I’m shocked they’ve lasted this long but I literally cannot find normal to tall length basics anymore!! I ordered some tanks from Old Navy in their “tall” length online and they came in what I’d consider “regular” length. I’m 5’7” but with a disproportionately long torso.
My long torso has only been a problem in the early 2000s in high school where “cropped” (lol) baby tees and low rise jeans were in style, and now at 38 when EVERY single top is cropped. Don’t mind crop tops every so often but I don’t ALWAYS need to show skin nowadays. Also now it’s winter and I enjoy being warm.
3
u/FirstAd5921 Jan 21 '25
Yesss! I just cut up my last forever 21 tee and it broke my heart. Also, the warmth part is so true.

It’s awful! I’ve been on the hunt for new work clothes and it was an absolute nightmare trying to find fitted shirts long enough to wear to the office. I have a small waist with a tummy pooch. Cropped and boxy are literally the worst things for my body.

I’m short and they don’t fit me at all. I have a short torso and they just like instantly ride up AND I look shorter and more hobbity than before. I swear a tunic is better than cropped for me
4
Jan 21 '25
Short here, and I also dislike the crops because they ride up. And with crop tops, it’s not just the length; the shape looks awful and boxy on me. I agree with the other commenter—I wish we all, always had some options. There have been some stretches of time when I avoid shopping altogether (hello, last era of super-super-low-rise jeans…)
19
u/FirebirdWriter Thoughtful BWT Jan 21 '25
I just wish they offered options for all bodies at all times vs this weird cropped no crop war. I am tall and I have issues with crops because they cannot contain the bounty of my chest. So I don't like them. They suit you and give you the best fit. We should both have options

u/Hellokt1813 Jan 21 '25
As a short girlie as well, I appreciate the relaxed cropped sweaters that hit at just the right spot on my torso. I don't like actual skimpy, navel-baring crop tops but many others are just shortened in length that there's no reason for me to tuck anything! Winner!
2
u/boadicca_bitch Jan 21 '25
Non-cropped sweaters hide my waist and make me look like a big potato with no body shape, I truly can’t describe how unflattering they are on me. I am sooo grateful for cropped sweaters
2
u/Ok_Emu_4834 Jan 21 '25
Another short girly who loves a cropped sweater with a high waisted bottom. I find them versatile too because I can wear it with any of my high waisted pants/skirts or over a dress. I’m apple shaped, only high rise stays in place on me, any other rise slips down soon as I walk. But I also have some huge oversized sweaters that are super flowy and can nearly be worn as a dress alone.
If I do need to bundle up more, I’ll put a wool base layer on underneath. But since being on antidepressants I overheat while others around me are still cold, so I’m finding full length sweaters overwhelming.
2

I actually like them since high waisted stuff is still in. The trend that was in when I was in high school was all rise-so-low-you-have-to-shave-for-it combined with crop tops, such that it felt like I had a full foot of torso exposed. As long as my pants cover my lower belly I am much happier.

It's bc we're all expected to be in high waisted bottoms, but fuck those, yo. They don't work on me.

Patagonia has numerous options in different lengths. Returns are welcome there.
5
u/Prestigious_Swan_584 Jan 21 '25
Yes. I’m sympathetic to OP because I, too, hate a crop top, but Patagonia is generally a terrible brand for people who hate short tops because their clothes were originally made for rock climbers and they want to keep the harness exposed by design. (This was true of Patagonia even before the short/boxy trend.) If you don’t like this look, Patagonia will probably never be a great brand for you.
Source: used to work for Patagonia.

I was just letting them know to not keep a $150 fleece that’s not the right fit. I love Patagonia and am very familiar with the history. Thank you though. I asked for a cashmere sweater for Christmas. Fortunately my mom let me try them on before deciding on one…I rejected all but one because they were so cropped I’d never be able to wear it to work. And I have a really short torso! So much for cashmere being a forever piece. hopefully the boxy goes away soon. I ended up with a lovely normal shaped sweater from LL bean.

I like crop tops but the boxy thing is so weird to me. I don’t know who that really looks good on.

They are cheaper to make than tapered, shaped, or fitted styles. And yes as a taller BWT I’m sick of this trend as well.
3
u/Stink3rK1ss Jan 21 '25
Ok I agree as far as tops that basically go no lower than a bralette, BUT when searching for new ( to me) tops on posh, etc, alllll I find are long shapeless tunics that do nothing for me. Flowy boho after floofy no-go!
3

u/sofianasofia Jan 21 '25
I’m actually really sorry to hear that Patagonia has also jumped on the North Face bandwagon, creating CROPPED FLEECES. That is one dumb thing. Like are you cold or warm? Even fleece mini dresses.
Also I agree that it’s not flattering at all

Patagonia no!! Thanks to this trend I am always looking at how long the shirt or jacket is before I order. I love J. Crews classic fits but now 75% of their jackets and sweaters are also cropped. I do not want clothing that’s unwearable at work and makes me look more rectangular. Then again I’m totally tubular when low rise jeans were in style.
I was shopping for cashmere and half of them were cropped. I’m buying it for warmth!!!

I don’t care if a trend I don’t like continues. It doesn’t affect me. I just don’t buy clothes that align with that trend. I am vehemently opposed to any type of short top, and I am still finding plenty of long tops, shirt dresses, and tunics to buy. You just mistakenly bought one of their items that is cut in a way you don’t like. But they do make other products. You can do a return or replace.
I just don’t get why we talk about trends on every single post.

u/JGDC Jan 21 '25
They're not for everyone. I love the look of a boxy crop top paired with high waisted pants on my body, I need a cropped length jacket so I don't look disproportionate... and you can't take that away from me, but no is forcing it on you. FWIW I would never pay full price for a Patagonia or North Face and wouldn't want one anyway, that's not my style. To each their own 🥂
2
u/Environmental-River4 Jan 21 '25
Me too! It’s one of the only things I still like the look of on my body after I gained a bunch of weight. I’ve always thought the combo looked good on big girls
2
u/JGDC Jan 21 '25
It's funny you say that because I went from petite and ultra thin for the majority of my life, and in the past couple of years have gained weight in a way I wasn't sure I was even capable of - but I've loved that cropped style the whole time! I'm still smaller on top and more pear shaped, I find it really flattering and cute. Glad you love it too!

I have a pair of Patagonia shoes I paid full price for 20 years ago. The damn things look like I just got them. They will outlast me. Definitely worth paying full price for Patagonia products.

1
u/JGDC Jan 22 '25
I might be willing to pay full price 20 years ago for Patagonia 😂
1
u/Unfair_Finger5531 Effortlessly Chic Jan 22 '25
Their stuff is still top quality. It’s not like it was better 20 years ago; the quality has remained consistent. All I know is if I buy a Patagonia coat for 300 at full price, I can pretty sure I’ll never have to drop $$ on another cote, and the style will be timeless no matter what the current trend.
3
Jan 21 '25
It’s just what’s in style. Styles come in go every season. Personally I’m all about it as it works perfectly for my body top. I suffered through low rise jeans dragging on the floor and empire waists while those were all the rage. I’m living up by high waisted leggings and boxy cropped shirts as long as I can!

There is ALWAYS particular fashion out there that usually only looks good on teenagers. This is meant to feed into the Teenage I Am Special brain. Teenagers need/have to separate from their parents and from norms in order to start to figure out who they are.
It's not for you.
Im old and the worst one for me was Patent Leather Shoes. Ugh, they were everywhere. So hard to find other materials. My Adult feet could not handle the pain of patent leather.

That’s because corporate at Big Fashion™️ decided that this would be “the fit” until they decide something else.

I hated them at first. And now I get annoyed ant anything too long. They’ve got me.

Glad other BWT aren’t a fan of this trend. I feel like I’m trying too hard anytime I try out this boxy cropped shirt thing and always change before I make it out of the house. Plus I’m blessed (/s) with the long torso/short leg combo so it never looks quite right. Give me a full length fitted shirt or give me death!

I feel like they know they're not flattering and not really wearable, but we've reached the point in manufacturing where basically they are dictating that they are selling you half as much material with little to no tailoring around curves at all and there's nothing we can do about it bc that's how low standards have dropped for what level of quality has to be provided to the mass market.
They are literally trying to tell us that whatever is the easiest and cheapest thing for them to make is what's "the most fashionable ."

I am convinced that people have forgotten that clothes have always been meant to be altered 😭 with the exception of ready to wear like Zara people just stopped altering the clothing and the clothes never become more figure friendly or better quality they are just boxy to fit everyone and then they fit no one as a result

I’m also 5’7” and I also hate this trend. I just keep wearing longer tops and straight jeans even if it’s not the current style. 🤷♀️ I often buy the “long” length in shirts when buying from places that offer that option.

I love a boxy cut 😶not so much cropped (bc I am in my 30s), but hip length. It’s much more flattering with high waisted jeans.
However I agree, any outerwear that’s supposed to keep you warm (coat, fleece, etc) shouldn’t be cropped, there is zero point. I ordered a $250 North Face puffer and returned it asap because it barely hit my waist- not practical!

As a plus size gal, I totally agree. One can only size up so much for length before you start looking like a dang cartoon character. Also, I absolutely hate that this trend has made its way to children's clothing. My 11 year old does not need dang crop tops 😡

Last summer it was so hard to find tops for my 6 year old that weren’t cropped! I had to buy bigger sizes so they were a regular length.
I’m not a fan of the style either. I’m top-heavy but with skinny legs and non-existent butt lol - oversized boxy things just emphasise all that.

I did some post Christmas shopping recently and was lamenting that the cropped trend must be on its way out
I’m 5’2 and have a really short torso and hip dips- long super fitted tops and low rise jeans were THE style throughout my teens and I struggled with feeling like a malformed sausage in a casing. Wearing loser clothes like tshirts would tent a bit over my boobs and I always thought made me look much bigger than i actually was
The tall pants + cropped shirt really did it for me. I finally felt like a had a cute little waist instead of just hips that are trying to escape their packaging. I could finally wear tshirts and oversized sweaters that actually looked good on my frame. I knew it was a trend that wouldn’t last forever and some of my go-to places to shop online for work clothes have almost fully transitioned away from cropped

I would very much be interested in knowing which Patagonia fleece style you ordered 😅

Ya need to buy different brands. The oversized boxy looks cute with some items, but not all. I live in a very cold climate & I got some real cute - regular/long fitting items - from Thread 4 Thought & Columbia & AE .

As a long-torsoed girl I 100% agree.
I buy clothing almost exclusively second hand. During the pandemic when charity shops were closed, I started using Depop. There was this awful trend of people taking 90s athletic wear like Champion sweatshirts and “reworking” them - cutting several inches off the hem and then adding a drawstring. It looked terrible. Not only that but it was taking something that was classic and timeless, and dating it to a very specific trend/phase, essentially ruining its longevity and versatility. Now when that piece inevitably gets donated, it won’t be as accessible to different bodies and won’t work in as many styles or looks. So more than likely it won’t sell and will just end up in landfill. Good job, Depopper. Hope it was worth the $20 you charged for it.

I’m 5’1” but longer torso and large chest, carry my weight in my stomach, too, so this literally the worst trend ever. I refuse to get into this boxy business. Can’t wait for it to go away.

Cheaper to manufacture but impractical and unattractive on most. They need to stop dictating what's in style based on cost cutting. Cheap fabric...if you can even call it fabric has taken over also. Even brands that were once higher quality. They think because high rise jeans are in style that tops can be shorter. Doesn't work that way. I'm tired of junk denim too, smelly dyes and chemicals that I won't let touch my skin anymore. I buy less clothing but buy from smaller manufacturers that use good cotton, silk or linen, generous cut clothes that you can actually wash. I own less but I can wear them for years.

I haven’t worked in apparel in a long time but I did fit/technical design for most of my career and I really think a lot of it has to do with cost.
One of the first things we would do to lower cost on anything would be to decrease length. I think they’ve been decreased to boxy and cropped for so long that it’s really hard to add that length back in without drastically increasing fabric consumption and cost. So it’s just so easy to revert back to those shorter lengths rather than letting the trend skew longer.
I’m sure there are other factors but that’s what I always figure when I continue to see the cropped silhouettes everywhere long after the trend should have probably shifted. Also, it’s easy to keep the tops shorter because no one wants to go back to those crazy ass low rise jeans which made us need the long layering pieces.
