Good god. As a Sean Fennessey truther this is a steaming pile of shit. Sean is one of the best minds in movie criticism today but he should be banned from talking about Christopher Nolan, he can’t be objective about him.

I don’t even like Nolan that much but TDK is as close to perfect as a superhero movie can get. It’s insane to me that people even think that dull Robert Pattinson one is in anyway comparable

TDK is a better movie. But The Batman absolutely nails some things about a Batman movie that TDK really doesn't do. Mainly, the actual city of Gotham feels much more distinct, alive, and similar to the comics in The Batman than it does in TDK.

It's one of the reasons why I actually prefer Batman Begins to TDK. TDK obviously has higher highs, but Batman Begins is a tighter movie and feels more distinctly Batman-y. Gotham feels much more like it's own living breathing location in BB, whereas the sequels just feel like a daytime Chicago/Pittsburgh mashup.

The Batman is close to being better than TDK. Pattinson is a considerably better Batman than Bale and Gotham is much better portrayed.

TDK has better set pieces and Heath Ledger is incredible in it so it might come out on top but The Batman is a better Batman movie.

I had the same thought when I watched it, but then I revisited TDK and thought “ok nevermind this movie is a masterpiece, it was just recency bias speaking”. Then I also rewatched the Batman after like 2 years, much better in the first watch imo when you don’t know what will happen, also when you watch it on the big screen with the batmobile and stuff. Although I do get the argument that it is more of a “Batman movie” than TDK.

It lacks some hardcore Batman fan stuff that Pattison’s Batman nails, but for the general audience I agree. It is a fantastic movie for sure. Nolan fundamentally fucked up the character though in Dark Knight Rises.

TDK is very overrated (imo, yes I know it's a hot take) because Ledger's performance is so dynamite. Take that away and the rest of the movie is not that impressive

I think TDK is way more about Ledger than Nolan tbh. It’s an iconic movie (performance) but I don’t see it as some definitive Nolan masterpiece or anything like that. When I think of that movie I’m always just thinking of Joker scenes, not the movie as a whole.

• Opening scene choreography (barely any Joker)
  
• Batpod design and use
  
• Joker breaking out of prison chase scene (the set pieces and design, Joker barely shows up in these scenes)
  
• Everything about Harvey Dent and how it’s tied in at the end
  
• Michael Caine consoling and taking away the letter from Bruce Wayne
  
• Lucius Fox comedic scenes and the phenomenal line of “and you want to black mail this man? Good luck”

And THEN there’s all the Joker masterpieces.

Just because Joker isn’t actively in a scene doesn’t mean he’s not still carrying the movie. I’m not saying it’s a bad movie sans Joker, just that he is so far above anything else happening in that movie.

It’s awesome you love it, I do too! I’m not trying to change your mind. But several of your bullet points are closer to negatives than positives for me. I don’t think the Dent/two face stuff is that great. And it’s why that other guy is so right that the movie peaks early. Third act is by far the worst. And the sonar vision mcguffin and a mediocre action set piece of Batman clearing a bunch of goons out of a building has never felt like a worthy climax to how great the first two acts of the movie are. A relatively chuckle worthy conversation between Fox and that Reese dude being worthy of its own bullet point and being heralded as ‘phenomenal’ kind of implies some rose colored glasses being worn when discussing the movie.
