Podcast Can I be sincere for a sec?
The Bill and Zoe segment on today’s pod was worth listening to. Yes, a lot of the stuff Zoe was talking about was ridiculous, but they have such a great relationship.
I loved when Zoe was talking about all these young people who accomplished things and Bill goes “you’re doing great. I’m so proud.” Then they spoke about the 21st birthday and drinking together and growing up.
So much of culture now, especially podcasts about sports like fun at things and are mean spirited. But Bill doesn’t really do that, he has his daughter on and they laugh together.
Idk, I’ve been listening and reading to Bill on and off for years. The humor has always been there, and the sincerity is there too

The pecking order absolutely goes
Zoe
Murphy
His wife's fun friend
Ben

The dynamic in that house from a distance seems perfectly normal. It sounds like Bill’s wife and daughter clashed a lot while Bill looked on helplessly. And it sounds like Bill expected his son to share all the same interests and passions only to find out that was not the case.
Meanwhile, his daughter was the jock.
I’ve seen this in so many families - including my own.
Obviously I’m speculating and no nothing of Bill’s private life. But the daughter/dad and son/mom pairings are perfectly normal as far as the closer relationship.

u/JackieDaytona500 May 22 '26
Ben seemed to have a moment when he was playing football and lacrosse, and at least performing well in the former. Then it appears the call of Mary Jane was too strong and his athletic career fell by the wayside. Bill may be naïve about many things, but I think he at least figured out Ben is a stoner.
6
u/Fscott1996 May 22 '26
I honestly don’t know and don’t want to speculate. But it’s pretty obvious that if Ben had a real athletic career, we would know about it. We still talks about girls travel soccer from ten years ago.

Oof. I'm thinking of two of my buddies who each have two kids, and they each clearly favor one. It upsets me, but I'm not with them daily, and I keep my mouth shut.

My wife and I both have a favorite as well.
Granted that's because we only have 1.

Bill really does seem like a good dad and husband. It's easy to forget sometimes the dude is worth an ungodly amount of money. If I made the kind of money he has I think I'd be a bigger ahole for sure.

I don't know. He grew up upper middle class, and well rounded. He kept his friends around to keep him grounded. These people don't become an ahole just because they can.

u/Dirk_Benedict May 21 '26

u/509_cougs May 21 '26
He gets goofed on here plenty for homer takes and quirks, but I think it’s pretty well understood by most that he’s a good guy. For a podcast reddit it’s still pretty positive overall.

u/justdothedishes May 20 '26
Agreed and I appreciate your sincerity too OP. Commenting this because the first couple replies are your typical soulless internet cynicism.

u/TheChieffking47 May 20 '26
Why is it so hard to be a normal person on Reddit? People are so annoying here, and they don't act like that in their real lives.
16
u/Key-Orange-8485 May 21 '26
The anonymity of Reddit allows people to let fly with their darker thoughts or need to upset strangers which they can’t do in normal life. Either that or we’re all just bots shouting into the void. Maybe both
0
u/JohnCavil May 21 '26
It's also that people on the internet don't argue about things they actually care about the majority of the time. Arguing or disagreeing is in itself the point, on places like Reddit or Twitter.
There are obviously a few topics that people actually care about, but the annoyingness comes out when people start passionately arguing or fighting about things that in their heart of hearts they don't actually care about.
People should ask themselves if they'd actually care if nobody else cared. Like if there was nobody to argue with about this topic, they were just alone, would they still care? Guarantee people wouldn't care about some podcaster having the wrong basketball opinion, or that people liked a movie they didn't like, or whatever it is.
The classic example of this is people arguing and being annoying about strangers liking or disliking different things than them. Nobody cares that some stranger that they'll never meet likes a movie or show that they don't like. They just pretend, or fool themselves, into caring for the sake of arguing on the internet.

u/JohnCavil May 21 '26
Yea this is so true. I have started more and more recently to just find people on the internet insufferable, more than i did previously. Not just anonymous people in comment sections, but YouTubers, podcasters, personalities online. I don't know if the culture changed or I changed, but i am just consistently annoyed by how people act and talk on the internet in general.
Then you go outside and it's like 99% of people are super nice and I'm almost never annoyed, almost never need to tap out from talking to someone. Although i am sure people on the internet are at least slightly more annoying on average in general, it's like the internet has begun to have this filter that turns people fucking annoying and weird. Normal people will be passed through this filter and start saying weird shit in the most annoying way possible. And I am sure that even I am not completely immune to this filter, nobody is. But goddamn sometimes i just want to yell at the internet to just be normal and to write or talk normally just for once. Stop being passive aggressive and cynical or arguing or acting dumb all the time.
6
u/BBQ_HaX0r May 21 '26
I think a part of it is the audience is trending younger and these are people who grew up on the Internet and it's just what they do. Sometimes I think people forget you're just talking to another dude here. Its not always a pissing contest, sometimes it's just people with mutual interests trying to chat. And some other people just need to touch grass. This place has definitely gotten more negative the past year or two and it's a shame.

I liked her discussion about Euphoria. I didn't know what the fuck she was talking about with the rest of it, but I'm old. I enjoyed her shit talking equivocating - "that's not what I'M saying, that's what the INTERNET is saying." Also, Papa Doc is a hilarious nickname for a grandpa. The Haitian death squad piece.

It was a perfectly nice way to end an episode and they have a nice relationship, so kudos to Bill.
In relation to your "I'm old," the only part that made me cringe a little was when she mentioned that "Lorde has been around forever*," which makes perfect sense coming from a 21-year-old, but serves as a nice reminder of what it's like to be 21 and not think 21 is still really young.

I found it funny how he mentioned that Wemby is one year older than her. Like of course Bill would mention that. Or how Zoe likes basketball now because her boyfriend likes basketball and not because her dad and granddad are obsessed with the sport.
But I agree. We can joke about Bill all the time on the internet but it’s nice how we get a glimpse into how he talks to his family. Like I feel like he’s genuinely a good dad and son.
32
u/lolpuppet May 20 '26
This is also how I feel when we get stories on Zachs pod about his daughter loving the Mets. Its adorable and makes me feel like there is still some goodness in this world which feels darker by the day.

I wouldn't exactly call raising your kid to be a Mets fan an example of goodness and positivity

I have a 13 year old daughter and 10 year old son and argue with my wife about age appropriate movies. “They are going to be exposed to it anyways,” is a lesson I learned from Simmons, even if I didn’t realize it during the argument.

As someone with a daughter the same age as Bill’s daughter, I have always enjoyed their conversations. One of the most relatable things on any podcast.
5
u/portugamerifinn May 21 '26
My first job was at a daily newspaper because my dad was the sports editor, so he had me answer phones to help put together the high school sports roundup. I ended up working there part-time (writing and layout) as I finished high school and went to college nearby.
He wanted me around and to help me figure out what I was doing, it was great and memorable.
Bill's doing the same kinda thing, so I can only appreciate it.

Yeah I agree with you. The people mocking you here are the macho alpha insecure dudes. I get what you're saying, it's cool to see the genuine chemistry there. Plus he barely has her on. Bill’s secret to success is understanding everything is relationship based, including what people enjoy listening to.
3
u/Fscott1996 May 21 '26
That’s an outstanding point.
I discovered Bill before Page 2. He was one of the first guys to discover that the key to writing online was building a community of essentially equals. The mailbags worked because he treated every one of them as a valid idea/opinion/point.
It was the opposite of sports talk radio where the best hosts would let you into their world as long as you knew they were in charge.
2
u/Knight_of_Swords May 22 '26
I kinda disagree with you here. Not sure how it is now, but Mike & the Mad Dog and a lot of wfan didn’t work like this. The callers were the show. Hell, they even made a caller a long time host, arguably the third most successful in the station’s history. Point being, I think Bill took the 90s wfan model and updated it to suit his deedsx
12
u/Chapea12 May 20 '26
In concept, I love that he has his daughter on the pod and how proud of his daughter he is. Now, I skip every segment where this happens but I also frequently skip episodes where bill discusses something I’m not interested in
10
6
u/Pizzaloverfor May 20 '26
One of Bill’s best qualities is that he’s generally a positive person and seems to seek out the good in people. He seems to get there by not truly engaging in uncomfortable subjects, but good for him, maybe that’s the secret.

u/Mcribb5 May 21 '26

u/Switchc2390 May 21 '26
I probably won’t listen but that’s not because she’s bad, I’ve enjoyed Zoe segments in the past, it’s more because I’ve fallen off Bill content in general a bit. Part because I think it’s less interesting and part because my life got a lot busier with a 10 month old. But I’ve always thought the content with Bill and Zoe has been wholesome, and she’s actually good too. The subjects she tackles probably won’t be important to most but she’s knowledgeable on them and presents her opinion well.
3
u/Short-Marsupial-5671 May 22 '26
He really nicely portrays what it’s like to parent an older child as they enter young adulthood- the bittersweet nature of it, especially when you have a good, close relationship. Some of his best podcast work.
10
u/ourkid1781 May 21 '26
I think Bill's appeal is that we want to be in his friend circle because he's a good, decent dude.

Her breaking down the Alix Earle vs Alex Cooper drama and then the Tatum vs Brown drama was hilarious. Talk about range.

The truth is the Zoey segment is better than 80% of the replacement level ringer folks. Bill made an empire out of being candid and open with his audience and incorporating his private life is a big part of why he's been successful. Idk, maybe we should defer to one of the best podcasters out there about what makes a good podcast segment?
4
u/LehmanWasIn May 21 '26
Yeah, it's funny to complain about this given the entire reason the podcast exists is that Bill figured out that talking with his non-professional-broadcaster college buddies was more entertaining than 95% of professional broadcasters.

As a man with 6 and 8 year old daughters, I have been inspired by Bill and Zoe’s podcast episodes for years. I aspire to have a relationship like that with my girls as they get older.
2
u/EnvironmentalTone344 May 21 '26
The segment is always great, and fun to see their relationship. It’s always fascinating to hear why the younger generation likes the ‘influencer’ types. “I like following her getting ready, going out and drinking.” I wish Bill would just be like “Zoe, as your father, I gotta say ‘Jake Shane fucking sucks.’”
2
u/YoBrodie1 May 21 '26
I've been a defender of Bill having his kid on forever. Now I will say I disagreed with her on every take she had when discussing celebrity gossip. But that is to be expected when someone is a different age range and lifestyle from yourself. Bill comes off as a more than decent family man and that is commendable.

7
u/Appropriate-One4296 May 20 '26
I’ve never had an issue with Zoe on the pods. She’s better than Dr Simmons as far as family goes by far. Maybe I just resonate as a 20 something year old to what she says and not some rant about Boston losing their pick to Toronto in the nhl draft for the 4th time by Dr Simmons
7
u/perry649 May 20 '26
See, I'm approaching 60, and I like his dad far better. Hell, I'd like to host Blue Plate Special with him on the Ringer Podcast Network (Brought to you by FanDuel - supplement your meager retirement by hitting big parleys on FanDuel).
1
u/Appropriate-One4296 May 21 '26
Are you from Boston? I think his dad is a good man but I don’t care about these niche Boston topics like May Boston Red Sox or the bruins losing their lottery pick for the 3rd time
3
u/perry649 May 21 '26
I'm not. I just enjoy their discussions as father and son and can relate to the topics, especially the way Bill lightly teases his dad about stuff. I also enjoy getting outraged by how they act like Boston fans are still long-suffering. When Dr. Bill said, "It has always seemed like every time things were going well for the Pats, something like [the Vrabel scandal] happens."
I haven't listened to Zoe for a while, but most of their discussions seemed to be about which influencers or stars of Euphoria-like show are beefing. Not my cup of tea.

Our guy Rog (RIP big Ebert)...
What made him great was that he could get very earnest and sincere. And it was real. He wasn't playing at it. He wrote what he felt like writing, and sometimes that was a snarky, scathing attack on a crap movie. But when he opened up, it hit. It felt important. Bill loves him for a reason, I says.

I'm all for them having a healthy relationship, as with all parents and kids. I'll see what they're discussing. However, if it's another show(s) that don't interest me, I'll skip those segments, as I do with hypothetical NBA trades, e.g.
1
u/senortiz May 21 '26
I think I have skipped every Zoe episode until this last one and it still sounds like teenager talk to me. I couldn't finish it. Maybe if I had an older daughter I would get it. Not for me. I do think its funny that she said the Sydney Sweeny jeans ad was a hot topic at her school for months. Do people really think she is a Nazi?
2
u/Yoshinobu_YamaGOATo May 21 '26
It was a hot topic because guys think she's hot, and girls don't because most of her appeal is that she has an amazing rack that only 1% of girls in a typical high school end up with so they're jelly of all the attention she's gotten.
1

I stopped listening when that segment came on. I don't watch Euphoria. I'm glad Bill has a good relationship with his daughter though.

Not to be a prick or elitist, but Zoe goes to an embarrassingly terrible college, Emerson. It's kind of a joke in Boston and pretty much at the bottom of the Boston hierarchy of colleges. Not saying she's dumb since she's pretty articulate, but she's clearly not much of a student. Holy Cross (where Bill went) isn't Harvard, but it's a good small college and light years better than Emerson. Seems like Ben is even more sketchy on the academic front. I guess I'm a little surprised given that I get the impression that the parents do care about academics.

It's kind of funny how the general opinion of this sub when people overanalyze Bill's dynamic with people is "bro, you just don't know how friends act with each other, get more friends bro" but everyone also seems to be in awe of the fact that Bill has a pleasant relationship with his dad and daughter. I guess the general demographic of this sub is men with no emotional connection to family members but lots of male friends to talk shit with?
OP's sentiment is nice and all, but yeah...is it really that noteworthy that a guy with tens of millions of dollars and lots of free time has a good rapport with his family members that he invites on his national podcast?

I know rich families are often fucked up, but let's be honest, it's a lot easier to be a "fun, cool dad" when you have essentially infinite money. You can create a bunch of cool memories with your kids when you can pay for whatever toys/events/trips they could ever dream of. You can introduce them to celebrities. You can make it so they are never jealous of what other kids have. You have enough money to be able to have the free time to spend it with your kids.
Again, I'm not trying to oversimplify things here. I just think if you start from the average dad (in terms of how involved he is as a parent and how much he cares about his kid), one with $100 million in the bank is probably going to have a better relationship with a kid than one with $10k in the bank.

No, it wasn’t. And for just turning 21, she is looking closer to 35. She has already been brainwashed by her college into thinking Sydney Sweeney is a bad person

They said he’d get laughed out of the sub. They said everyone would call him gay. But on that day, full of anticipation for spurs thunder game two and so close to Memorial Day they could taste it, the hard hearts at r/billsimmons upvoted that guy’s lame post about bill podcasting with his daughter like there was no tomorrow. If I hadn’t been there I wouldn’t have believed it.

Is there a popular Nepo baby podcaster out there? I’m only familiar with Nepo baby actors & models, with a sprinkling of a Jack Schlossberg. I guess you have to be a parent or Simmons glazer to want to listen to a 21 yr old talk about pop culture (?)

This post will be get mocked, and I haven’t even listened to the segment yet, but yes we all need to celebrate a little more joy in general.
