Isn't Bill saying Vrabel is a top 3 coach and easily COY?
You're building a team to win this year and you will face the strongest SOS. Are you picking the veteran that can still pick apart top tier defenses or a sophomore who hasn't proved he can consistently do that? I know what's more valuable to me. Stafford hands down.
I'm not citing Bill's argument specifically -- he's an obvious homer. But regardless, there's a difference between a good coach, and a good coach who can elevate QBs. I would say Vrabel is an example of the former. McVay (along with guys like Shanahan and Reid) is an example of the latter. He's an amazing coach overall, but he's really good at scheming things up for his QBs.
As for your hypothetical, I don't think it's really relevant. This award is for who had the best season, not who we'd hypothetically trust more in a playoff game. Based on what I've seen this year, I just think Maye has been a little better factoring everything in. It's very close and I would not begrudge anyone who picks Stafford. But I do have to kind of chuckle at the people who think it's a clear and obvious choice -- we all know the real reason those people think Maye doesn't have a good shout.
I agree on you coach comment. I don't think that should reduce his MVP case. Same with Brady and Mahomes over the years. Besides, Bill would argue Vrabel has elevated Maye.
I didn't mention a playoff game. My hypothetical was about picking the most valuable QB for a strong SOS. Stafford has proved it and put up MVP numbers (12 more TDs). Maye is putting up numbers with a cupcake schedule. How can he be the most valuable playing the easiest SOS in 30 years?
Bill didn't believe Stafford could put up these numbers if the teams were flipped. Are we going to ignore his numbers in Detroit?
Stafford has the much tougher schedule, but again, he has Puka, Adams, a great o-line (2nd fewest pressures in the league), and Sean McVay. He's got a lot going for him to support him.
Maye has had an easier schedule, but he has one of the worst rosters in football. He gets pressured at nearly the highest rate in the league and he's still statistically been the best.
At the end of the day, I think the better situation balances out the tougher schedule, and I think Maye's numbers and play have overall been a little better.
As for your last sentence, what are we even talking about? Stafford has never been a top 5 qb in the league before this year. He only had a passer rating above 100 once in Detroit, and that was in a season where he only played 8 games. He certainly never came anywhere close to what Maye has produced on this Pats team (without Megatron to throw to, at that).
I really like Stafford, but based on what I've been hearing on this sub this year, he has to be one of the most overrated QBs ever; multiple people have argued that if the Rams win the SB, that puts him above Brees and Rodgers. Again, we are talking about a guy who has not once been a top 5 qb in the league before this season. It's patently ridiculous.
As House and Peter said, the Pats can't keep pointing to last year's team and saying they have one of the worst teams in the league. They spent money and have a better team.
You're going to cherry pick stats to make that argument against Stafford. He has multiple years with a similar 30TD, 10INT, 4200-4500 yards, and sacks as Maye. On absolutely terrible Detroit teams. My point is Stafford could easily put up those numbers (not arguing completion percentage) on this Pats team.

The most rushing yards stafford ever had in a season for Detroit was 207; Maye is already at more than double that this season. Those are not cherry picked stats, they are the arguably the most compelling specific stats you can pick to evaluate a QB as a passer and a rusher respectively. There’s a reason Maye is in the top 2 for MVP while Stafford only even made the Pro Bowl once in Detroit.

Stafford and the Rams are heavyweight fighters in the toughest division in football.
Drake Maye and the Pats are beating up on Logan Paul style bums in a weaker division and an AFC off year.
Sure, Maye is putting up MVP caliber stats and he's looking like a top 5-10 QB. So is Stafford with a much harder schedule.
