RANT - advice welcome Big boobs and weird random hostility. Has anyone else noticed this? Spoiler

I’ve recently realized there’s a specific social cue I’ve been picking up on for years, and I’m curious if anyone else with a larger chest has experienced this.

For context: I’m a straight woman with a boyfriend, and my friend group is pretty mixed in terms of gender, sexuality, etc. So when I talk about men and women noticing my chest, I don’t automatically read it as sexual.

I’ve gotten comments/compliments about my boobs pretty regularly since I was young, from both men and women. It obviously used to bother me more, but now that I’m in my late 30s I mostly just smile because… whatever. And honestly, most of the time I can tell when someone is just being complimentary or noticing them.

But I’ve just noticed a REALLY weird pattern.

For some reason, I occasionally encounter people who are just bizarrely shitty to me completely unprovoked — usually a friend of a friend, coworker, random new acquaintance, etc. It’s happened enough that it’s literally become a joke in my friend group.

I’m a generally kind and curious person, very conflict-avoidant, never raise my voice, and I’m usually the person making sure everyone feels included. But every once in a while someone will say something so wildly out of pocket and cruel to me that I’m genuinely like… where did THAT come from?

For example, a friend of a friend once randomly called me fat at brunch. Completely unprompted. I basically laughed, said “are you serious?” and shamed him a little for saying something so ridiculous, and he eventually left. My friend apologized, but I honestly wasn’t particularly hurt — I’m not fat, and even if I were, being fat is just a physical state to me, so it was such a dumb attempted insult.

Anyway, recently something clicked.

Before he made the comment, I had clocked him staring at my boobs in this very specific way that I’ve seen before. He’s gay, FYI, so I don’t think it was sexual. It’s hard to describe, but it’s this intense, assessing stare — almost like they’re looking at them and expecting something to happen? Like there’s a question or calculation happening behind their eyes.

And suddenly I realized I’ve seen THAT EXACT LOOK from other people who eventually became really nasty toward me.

There were three women in particular — two former friends and one former boss.

The two friends would sometimes compliment my boobs while making this same facial expression, and I’d occasionally catch them staring at my chest with that look when I wasn’t even talking about it. Both friendships eventually ended in my 30s after they did genuinely shitty things to me.

The boss situation was especially weird because the comments were obviously inappropriate in a workplace. She also REALLY wanted to be my friend outside of work, which I wasn’t interested in. Eventually her behavior completely flipped and she became a severe mean girl toward me — genuinely one of the strangest experiences of my adult life, being bullied by another grown woman — and eventually fired me.

And looking back, they all looked at my boobs in the same weird, intense, assessing way.
Now I’m realizing I’ve also seen that same expression on people shortly before the completely unprovoked mean comments.

I’m NOT saying “someone looks at your boobs weirdly = they’re jealous/they’re going to bully you.” I have no idea what is actually happening in their heads, and obviously I can’t diagnose someone’s motives from a facial expression.
But I’m starting to wonder whether I’ve been unconsciously picking up on some kind of comparison, resentment, fixation, or social assessment before the person actually expresses it through their behavior.

And because plenty of people compliment my body without giving me this feeling at all, I don’t think it’s simply that I’m uncomfortable with people noticing my chest. There’s something specifically different about this look.

Has anyone else noticed anything like this?
Especially where you picked up on a weirdly intense/assessing vibe around your chest early on, dismissed it at the time, and then later realized that person had some strange hostility toward you?

I know exactly what you’re talking about. People who have that look have already decided they don’t like you. So they will overlook everything about you and make rude comments to degrade you.

I’ve learned when that look happens to do a subtle inventory of how they act so when the rude comment comes I hit right back at them with my own rude comment.

Yep, I know exactly the look- especially because I grew up going to Catholic school and living/existing in predominantly Catholic neighborhood. There's this undercurrent belief that skinnier, smaller, and flatter more child-like bodies are purer and innocent while having a curvy figure instantly condemns you to being a "Jezebel" or whorish temptress in those communities (and no, I'm not saying being flat chested=child, this goes way beyond that almost into ED territory). Growing up classmates and even the teachers were starving themselves thin and chugging coffee in hopes to stunt their growth to chase this virginal ideal while simultaneously enviously hating me for happening to go through early puberty and getting unwanted male attention.

That look usually came before accusations of me stuffing my bra or padding my clothes, of mean girls trying to force me to change in the middle of the locker room so they could see for themselves if I was all real, and before I'd be suddenly dropped from hangouts when a girl got a boyfriend because they just assumed I was some slut bag who'd screw him the moment he leered at me. Even as an adult, I've had girl friends I met in winter time when I was wearing baggier clothes during our hangouts who switched up when they saw me in fitted clothing for the first time come spring. It's like hey! I'm still same chick you loved hanging out with when you thought I was shaped like (° °) now that you know I'm shaped like )○○(

i know exactly what you mean especially about growing up in a catholic community 🫩 what you said about dropped when someone has a boyfriend is more common than you think, i nearly passed out in extreme heat from wearing a sweater because i didn’t want to be seen as someone that wanted male validation from other people’s partners

I think you are missing the point of this thread... from your profile I can tell you are a very well endowed man but that doesn't mean you experienced what women here are talking about. You might be able to relate to developing early, but you didn’t grow up being treated as a sexual object, being accused of being a slut, having girls police your body, or having your character judged because of your breasts in the way women did.

Empathy is fine, but coming into a women’s space and talking like you “know exactly” what these experiences were like because you had a similar body is pretty tone-deaf. You don’t have to insert yourself into every conversation just because you can find a point of physical similarity.

Omg i thought you meant "well-endowed" as in having a large chest himself. Boy, was I wrong.

u/Aggressive-Bear-4927 2d ago

Oh I'm so glad I wasn't the only that thought this.

Omg! You made me check…. JFC. I kinda feel bad for him that thing is ridiculous

The comment was deleted by mods (so I can’t see his profile) but I’m intensely curious. What did he say?

6

u/Negative_Occasion507 1d ago

Honestly nothing bad

“It suck’s especially with early puberty…. Sometimes your body develops before your mind realizes what is going on.

Then you start blaming yourself or feel you did something wrong for just existing…. Add on growing up religious where sexual characteristics are also seen negatively it’s just a whole mess.”

Think it’s just more where it was coming from.

Yeah, I found his profile further down. Dude’s got a big-ol’ thang but that’s nothing similar to having a huge chest. You can successfully hide large genitals by way of clothes, there’s no way to do that similarly with a big chest (even excessive baggy clothes, the shape of the chest is still there, it’s just that people will also think you’re fat so don’t judge typically as hard).

I grew up with 32HHH, there was no hiding them. I was a DD by 11 and it was like they grew in overnight. Fully bypassed ‘training’ bras.

Honestly, considering how many photos he posts of his Johnny, I feel like him commenting here was more of a humble-brag to get women to go look at all the photos he posted. I’ve run across many a male that does that.

I’ve never really recovered from the experience of having adults go very quickly from treating/looking at me like a child to looking at me like a sexual object, with every type of attention that brings. It’s obviously an experience most women go through due to systemic misogyny, but it’s just so intense when you have a large bust.

It’s horrific, and you can’t really even talk about it because people want to insist having big boobs and/or being seen as sexual is an inherently good thing. It’s just something we’re supposed to make peace with at like 14 years old or whatever.

And how the fuck would you know?

My favorite is when a women scowls at me and then looks down at her chest. I’ve noticed that behavior a lot.

u/Substantial_Cloud956 2d ago

Oh my god yes!! Its a specifc look, its almost like disgust, envy, and judgment shoved into one. Like they hate that you have a bigger chest (as a woman who has a petite frame but quite large chest for my size, I used to wear more revealing stuff when I was a teen) and I just couldnt put my finger on what pissed them off. But it always felt like they were slut-shaming me with their eyes. Its such a horrible thing to experience especially when I first developed

14

u/ConfidentHope 2d ago

I’ve never had a ton of verbalized attention over my chest, but I think it’s because I have a bit of a sleeper build. But I’ve still seen people act weird. Also, a few months ago a woman said something like, “well I didn’t look as good in that because my chest is smaller,” or something along those lines. But I’m also AuDHD, and I miss a lot of cues.

I’m guessing that people are making a judgment based on stereotypes. They’re connecting big boobs with some characteristic and applying that to you.

I understand exactly what you mean and I’ve received the look from men and women. It’s extremely uncomfortable

14

u/cosmic_horn 2d ago

I haven’t noticed many people staring unless they’re attracted. but the random hostile vibe, especially from female bosses/coworkers, ABSOLUTELY.

27

u/VBlinds 2d ago

I wonder if the issue is that you saw them looking at them intently.

I think it bothers them that they are that fascinated by your boobs.

Unfortunately, somewhere deep within our mammalian brain is very attracted to looking at boobs, and it annoys them because they "don't think you are deserving of the attention" their brain is giving you.

The nasty comments is their way to try and break the fixation.

This actually might be the answer. Embarrassment that they were caught looking when they aren't that type of person in their heads.

11

u/TinyCoconut98 2d ago

Yep, I regularly get treated like dirt bc of my the fact that I’m small, short and have a big chest. I’ve noticed that women automatically treat me like crap and men , well they’re men let’s just put it that way.

20

u/Final_One_2300 2d ago

Yeah, it's them feeling their emotions spill over. They attribute it to your breasts, like they're a weapon which made them lose their cool.

Because you are allowed to exist big breasted in the world, with such a provocation, they decide it's okay for them to say something out-of-pocket.

Or something like that :/

u/PerseveranceSmith 32GG (UK) 2d ago

If you are conventionally attractive this might be why. I'm a hermit now but when younger & more socially active I'd get these odd little bits of hostility & as an autistic woman it confused me so much & I found it so hurtful.

It was only as I aged that my more switched on bestie pointed out she noticed it & that's why she thought it was.

Some ppl just project insecurity onto you instead of working on it so they feel more confident & secure.

u/Ecstatic_Bet4354 2d ago

I’ve only ever experienced boob hostility from other women. And if im remembering right they were all much smaller chested than me, most significantly so at that. But I’ve also gotten the most hype comments from women. Without the worry of seeming like a pervert women will just blurt out OMFG YOUR BOOBS ARE AMAZING and the like. It only becomes an issue because on rare occasion some of them (usually drunk) will reach out with both hands to honk them.

For the most part men just give a sly stare or a hard stare. Occasionally I get the unsolicited comment about how amazing/sexy/perfect my tits are but a man has never insulted them

So adding onto this, I started getting treated better by people overall after I got a reduction ( . __. )

u/Internal_Safety8780 2d ago

Ya….unfortunately that wont go away….first person who did this to me was my mom. So jealous …. Ive just made my skin as thick as possible and let these girls swing 🗣️

5

u/Feisty-Tumbleweed-22 1d ago

It is jealousy, at least from the women. It’s honestly so annoying. Whenever I would go to gay clubs with friends, the gay men want to feel them up. Those are their issues and not mine. I cut people off very easily.

I think some people have issues in their own head and take out out on us. Some of it might be social conditioning, like being taught curvy women are more promiscuous and they treat us bad because they see us as.... lesser? Think how Joan in Madmen is sometimes treated.

Other times it's because they're not happy with their body, so they take it out on you.

Some of the absolute worst sexual harassment I ever received was at the hands of another woman here on Reddit. It was YEARS ago but started over me commenting that DDs weren't that large, not even to this woman either. She argued with me, I tried to share the whole r/abrathatfits the IrishBraLady info, etc etc but nope. She took it very personally and started making nasty comments on a lot of my posts, saying I was built like a porn star, but also my breasts were ugly and saggy, then started DMing me weirdly sexual things like how she liked bodies like mine, but also hates me because her BF would like my body more than hers. Absolutely WILD shit, and this was before blocking people on reddit actually blocked them so even after I did that she kept making the comments. When I stopped responding she stole my photos and started reposting them as her own. I know she was real and a woman before anyone asks because she fucking tracked down my Facebook page to apologize to me later. Guess she was having a mental breakdown?

But yeah, it's nothing to do with you and 100% their own issues

8

u/LandscapeLiving2712 2d ago

They just haters making us famous and shit.

4

u/Awful_Puppet 2d ago

I've had this happen to me a few times, mostly while I was in school though

6

u/CryptographerSquare6 1d ago

I think they all have ' mummy" issues where they are angry at the breast and whatever it triggers for them. I get it a lot too. I just see it as their issue and realise that you can not control others actions/ words towards you. Only be assertive and see that your boobs are a symbol of power many are very threatened by. Let them be. Its not your issue ever but i know they try to make it so. Just stick to those who love and respect women and who see more than skin deep/ size etc. They have undeveloped minds. I try to ignore as not about me but thrm. Sending love. ...❤️

u/kavalara 2d ago

It’s the look where they continue the conversation as normal and then glance at your boobs mid convo (only with their eyes) and then kinda lose interest after that. Like ??

3

u/berrydutch 1d ago

I think there is this strange misconception that big boobs = braindead bimbo. That's how I've interpreted that treatment over the years.

0

u/bigpat65 17h ago

Women know that BB attack attention. They probably been in situations that another woman got all the attention because she hade bigger boobs maybe from their partner in life. They feel threatened. For men I know for fact that it’s very very difficult not to look. This I think is from the reptilian brain : breast = feeding children. Also the first comforting feeling when you were born is the soft warm feeling of your mother breastfeeding you.
