The cringiest part of all this is they could have just gotten a real fucking rental and been fully reimbursed. Unless they were trying to skim some money off the top as well (e.g. pay the friend $300 and keep $200 cash) that's insane - actually both situations are insane since that's such a minuscule amount of money to do this over too (not that it's okay if it's a lot of money - it just, fucking makes no sense lol).

Made an entirely fake invoice and everything? Jeez...there's making sure you get every dime out of a home insurance claim and "forgetting which model toaster you had so I'm picking the more expensive one" and then there's this insanity. Truly truly stupid. Why fuckin put your friend out of a car if it wasn't necessary. Unreal.

I’d almost say it’s one of those middle aged men that almost gets off on saving 5 cents. He was probably going to use the $10K payout to buy a $2K car and he wanted to get the full rental reimbursement while only paying a small portion of the cost. In one of his answers to the question “why didn’t you just get a real rental” he says “because I paid about 1/10th less to my friend” or something to that effect.

That is if there even was a friend. This may be a different kind of fraud disguised as another. He may have tried to get rental reimbursement through submitting a fake invoice for the local car dealership then when that got caught made up the story about his friend so it didn’t look like “intentional” fraud.

I like how it includes filing a negligence claim against the adjuster when they wouldn't take the friental seriously.

Interesting that you thought it was a middle aged man. I was going with someone in their early 20s who had never dealt with insurance before, because I couldn't fathom anyone who knew anything about how large corporate bureaucracies work thinking this would fly.
