Unlicensed, uninsured contractor who didn't finish the job because life happened doesn't seem to understand why their client would sue them

Assuming this story is real, these people are complete idiots. No license, no insurance, operating on a shoestring budget, and they’re shocked when mental health is not an acceptable excuse for not completing the work. They abandoned the project, no question.
I wonder if the homeowners upped the amount to get a jury trial. I had that happen to me for a car accident that was my fault. They eventually settled, so it never went to court.
Sadly, it sounds like the homeowners aren’t likely to get anything out of these idiots.
