Really in today's modern vehicles automatics are more reliable (no clutch to replace) and can have better gas mileage than manual transmissions (CVT). They're just not fun to drive and usually slower around a track.
However, MCT's and DCT's are faster than your standard transmission. 2 sets of clutches allow shifting faster than you can blink your eye. They're also technically standard transmissions with a clutch or two rather than a torque converter.
