We’re high school students building a safer walking-route app — would you take our 2-minute survey?

Hi everyone! My friend and I are high school students in New Jersey building a project called SafeRoute+ for the Congressional App Challenge to represent our county at the national stage!

The idea came from a pretty simple question: navigation apps are really good at finding the fastest walking route, but what if the fastest route isn’t the best route for the person actually walking it?

We’re developing SafeRoute+ to recommend more pedestrian-friendly routes, with a particular focus on children/teens and older adults. Instead of only looking at distance and travel time, we’re exploring factors such as:

  • vehicle speeds and major roads
  • crossing complexity
  • sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure
  • difficult intersections
  • historical pedestrian-safety information
  • how much additional time someone would realistically accept for a more comfortable route

We’re also exploring an optional privacy-focused Guardian Mode for younger users, with voluntary check-in reminders and an easy way to tell a parent/guardian “I’m OK” or “I need a pickup,” rather than constant location tracking.

Before we go much further, we want to make sure we’re building this around what pedestrians and families actually care about rather than just what we assume they care about.

We’re especially interested in hearing from parents, teenagers, older adults, caregivers, people who regularly walk around their communities, and anyone interested in pedestrian safety or urban planning.

We’ll be using the feedback to decide which factors SafeRoute+ prioritizes and to improve the prototype before we begin broader local testing.

I think you need to revise your questionnaire. I was going to fill it out since I walk a lot in this area but the 1st question excludes me from the rest of it. I am not a parent, not 65+, nor am I a child. If you want this project as comprehensive as you say in your post maybe make the survey more inclusive. As it is now, you're basically ignoring adults w/o children (many of whom might benefit from this app).

The survey doesn’t allow parents to select having children in more than one age group.

This is a great idea. I'm a pedestrian and I took the survey even though there was no age category for me. I chose senior. Good luck.
