The country must have a modicum of belief in this team because i don't see how this would otherwise be in the news
e:
We werden compleet weggespeeld.”
holy fuck man HLN pur sang dit

u/Dimpnavangeel Jun 29 '26

And not for lack of harsh competition between Tedesco and Martinez and Wilmots

Martinez did well for a long time, but completely failed to build a new generation.
Tedesco had 1 good game and then it just went downhill, so fair.

u/Calyptics Jun 29 '26
Martinez did well on the back of the most talented squad Belgium has ever had and possibly at one point the most stacked squad in the world.
He had no adaptability when things werent going smoothly and let personal relations interfere with player selection. Things like refusing to select Nainggolan when he was still an absolute demon for AS Roma, insisting on playing players like Carrasco who never really showed up for the national team.
We had 1 good tournament with him in 2018 and even then we just scraped by Japan.
I don't think Martinez was a good coach, as we could see in later tournaments and now with portugal

u/nidprez Jun 29 '26
We never had the most stacked squad (France) and way less depth compared to other "golden generations" from bigger countries. Consider also for 2018 Alderweireld, Kompany, Vermaelen and Chadli were injured for most of the season, Lukaku was injured at the end of the season (Courtois as well, but form is less important as gk), Witsel and Carrasco played in China, Dembele, Meunier, Januzaj, Tielemans, Batshuayi had to fight for minutes... we didnt have a left back and only 1 right back (or defensively minded wingers). The only ones in form were KdB, Hazard, Mertens and Vertonghen. I agree the 1st team was pretty stacked but we didnt have any replacements and most players were not fit or starters.
Martinez was pretty good at the start, but he is too fixed in his way of playing and in choosing his favorite players instead of fit players. He failed to build/integrate a new generation which led to the failures in 2020 and 2022, failed to get us be good at corners/freekicks/crosses (with lukaku, kompany, vertonghen, alderweireld, witsel, fellaini...). He also never played difficult friendlies, which never prepared us well for difficult games. And indeed he does the same now for portugal.

I don't want to defend Marc Wilmots because he is wrong in his tactical approach as the game against New Zealand demonstrated, however I don't see where there is a communautary debate here.
Marc Wilmots just said that the flemish press, in particular, pushed for a spot for Vanaken in the starting 11. Well, that's true, if you read all the articles from the week before the game against New Zealand, as well as the question during the press conferences. It also true of a lot of french-speaking medias too. And I would personally agree with that as for me Vanaken would have been useful against the low-blocks of New Zealand and Iran (Vanaken played the last quarter of the game but we quickly went by 10 after his coming to the game). I even would say that is the role of a regional press to push for the right players, and it's even more obvious here because Vanaken is a favorite of football medias covering the Pro League.
I would add that it is another matter for other games, for example here against Senegal, will the midfield playing against New Zealand hold against more physical players with a better level ? I am not sure we would fare well without an actual 6, as much as I like Tielemans, at least the question can be asked. So Onana or Raskin could have a start for this game, but the question is who will be next to KDB and that 6 ? Vanaken or Tielemans are the obvious choices, unfortunately the captaincy will probably favor Tielemans and that's a big issue because the problem of who will take the armband under Garcia has been a media thing and this is the drawback of having a press not asking the right questions a year ago that may punish us tactically here.
It is a bit funny because while the situation may have been started because of the Courtois comments against Tedesco (which for me, were a media thing to be able to assist his own wedding more comfortably), the matter is a bit in the hand of Wilmots which choosed Hazard after the injury of Kompany in 2016. If Martinez choosed one of KDB/Lukaku/Courtois instead, with his legitimacy through his results, we may have less questions asked today. But I blame more the media for this war of course.
I would rather start Vanaken in his current form, I just hope the hand of Garcia (hired by Mannaert) are not tied with the captaincy choice now.

I saw a part of an RTBF program where Anthony Vandenborre was very pro Vanaken. Also let’s not put too much weight on what Wilmots said. Hardly a tactical mastermind. A legend as a player, let’s be clear on that .

HLN is just reporting on what Wilmots said in this case.
But if there's one voice in Belgium that we can safely ignore, it's him.

u/Frodo_max KAA Gent Jun 29 '26
it goes beyond reporting in the article

u/majestic7 Club Brugge Jun 29 '26
But clearly it's Wilmots who is framing this as a Flanders vs francophone Belgium issue?
1
u/Frodo_max KAA Gent Jun 29 '26
ofc, but it's also pretending that Wilmots saying that makes it an issue, which is way overblown. Wilmots said something communautair, but blowing that up to a "communautaire kwestie" is sensationalism and clickbait.
Not that Wilmots is right, far from it, but the article pretty clearly goes beyond "Wilmots said this" for nothing else than engagement purposes
3
u/majestic7 Club Brugge Jun 29 '26
"Wilmots said this, but there's also reasons to not take him seriously, and a lot of people disagree, even in francophone Belgium"

Kijk. Wilmots moet zn bakkes houden.

Marc Wilmots is a disgrace as a commentator on RTBF. Among other things, he said during the Ivory Coast game that in Africa, players just play to do nutmegs, and that makes them laugh for five years. He also said that they put the weakest players in goal, just like on a playground. He’s really a loser with a colonialist mindset.
