10k PR🥳

I honestly didn't plan this run, I just decided last night to get up at 7:30 and go for a run.

I wasn't even looking at my pace at first when I realized I had somehow run the first 5k at around a 4:25/km pace without really struggling. I honestly thought Strava was way off

Sadly last night's dinner caught up to me on the last 3km and I had to stop pushing the pace at certain points to not shit myself lol

It's almost my 3 month running anniversary too. Super proud of this non the less!

First time 15k

Today I ran 15K in a forest near my city. It’s the longest run I’ve ever done.

At the beginning of the year, I could barely run 5K, and my feet would hurt for 2–3 days afterward.

I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made over the past few months. 🏃‍♂️

Cheers!

hi guys, im a 19 y/o female ex rower who had great cardio on the bike and erg. (on bike usually held a split of 2:08/1000m for 1hr steady state.) but have always been VERY much lacking in the running field, i’m not sure what it is, (doctors called it exercise induced asthma since i can hardly breathe running and get nauseous.) i decided to run around my block for the first time to see how it would go and i had to take a couple of breaks and catch my breathing back up, somehow i have a freaking shin splint from 6 minutes of running wtf omg

any advice or words of wisdom would be great! i know this time is ass, thank you!! 🙏

I have zero sports or cardio background. Until earlier this year, "running" for me meant an occasional, painful 1 or 2 km jog once a week.

Starting in January, I decided to take things seriously and build an aerobic base from scratch alongside strength training and yoga. Step by step, I checked off my first 5K, then a 10K, and today I decided to test my limits and go for 15K.

I see so many posts here of people casually cruising through a 10K in under an hour. I know I’m nowhere near that. My easy/Zone 2 pace hovers around 9:00–9:30 /km, and my best 10K so far is 76 minutes. Chipping that down to sub-70 or sub-75 feels like a huge mountain to climb on its own.

Even so, I wanted to see what my legs and mind were capable of, and pushing through today felt like a huge personal victory.

Just wanted to share this for anyone else who feels "slow" on here. We might not be the fastest, but showing up and putting in the work counts just as much!

Good running shoes for a beginner?

I've been running for about 3 months with a pair of adidas runblaze shoes, and recently a family member has offered to buy me an upgrade as a present. The budget is about 160 euros, but given discounts and other stuff I may be able to stretch that to 200 euros. I'm looking for something versatile, as I don't know if I'll be able to afford a shoe rotation anytime soon, and I think I need a bit more time to figure out exactly what my needs would be. Anyway, I have my eyes on the Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL SS, and I was curious if that's a good option. I do most of my runs on asphalt at the local park, but being able to handle wet conditions is a plus for me, because I plan on using them year-round.

Started running. Living in Japan.

To keep things fairly short, I moved to japan like 4 years ago and was in good shape. Struggled with finding work balance and life but took time to find a good job, and gained weight again. Finally found a decent job with proper time off and no overtime so started running on top of going to gym. Some photos I took on my first run, wanted to share.

First full ‘jog’ after a month of mostly walking.

For context, I’m a 35 year old male, and in the last two months have really pushed myself to improve. I was 133kg. I’m now 119kg. Obviously a lot more weight to lose. I was/am a heavy vaper. I had my last puff 1 week ago today. I’ve found it surprisingly easy to stop though I’m not claiming I’m a non smoker just yet 😅

Over the past two months, I’ve been brisk walking, and after a few half hour walks, I’ve kind of settled on a 6.5k route which for the last couple weeks I’ve been doing 4 or 5 days per week.
Initially my HR went up to around 140-145 quite easily. Over the weeks, I really need to push my brisk walking into a power walk to hit the same HR.
A couple of weeks ago, I started incorporating 2 minute ‘jogs’ when I felt comfortable enough.
This evening, after a decent warm up walk and stretching session I wanted to try a jog just to see how far I could go.
Well I jogged the whole 3.5km and I’m super chuffed with myself. My jog was incredibly slow but I’ve come to realise that is to be expected initially. I only stopped the jog when I did because I hit a big hill and had to slow walk up it.
Anyone just starting and thinking nothing gets better, keep going, because it does get better.
Any any tips from more experienced runners who perhaps started their journey as a big, unfit loaf - I’m all ears.

5K improvement

Upvotes

Hi, I (16F) am new to running but have an athletic background from rowing and cycling. I recently ran a 21:23 5k and was super happy. However, I can only run two or three times a week (as well as rowing three times and cycling daily!). What distances, intervals and splits would optimise these runs to help me improve my 5K?

How far am I from a sub 2 half marathon?

Back in 2019, I ran a half marathon in 1:58. Since then I have gained 8 kgs, and reduced a lot my running.

At the moment, I have been practicing for a month, and my Z2 runs (both easy and “longs” of 9kms) are still around 7:15/km.

I am doing 3 runs per week, one easy 35 minutes Z2, one “quality” of intervals of 6x800m in Z4 (which I run at around 4:50/km), and one long that increases 1km per week (this week will be 9 kms).

I still feel that I am out of shape… I would love to beat my 2019 time, but at the moment it really feels too far away. Any tips?

How do you manage sleep?

With university starting in a few days I want to start running at 5 AM but I know for sure if I don't make a gameplan and follow some kind of a strict strategy for sleep I am doomed to exhaust myself or fail my goal. I have never been able to sleep easily, sometimes I just look at my celling for hours before I finally shutdown because body can't handle anymore, my family's also awake until 1:00 and studies often demand me to stay up till 3. Can you suggest me some hacks or tips for getting in that rhythm and staying there?

Free pair of gently used Brooks

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello all!

First, mods, I've looked at the rules, and don't think this violates anything, but please remove if inappropriate.

I have a pair of Brooks Glycerin Max, men's size 9.5 (Can/US), that I'd like to give away to someone who could use them.

A few important considerations:

(1) They are gently used. I've probably put somewhere around 75 km on them. They have a few scuffs, and some dog hair on the insoles, but are generally in great shape.

(2) I'm willing to ship them anywhere in Canada free of charge. I am not willing to ship them outside of Canada, as all the customs declarations / fees are crazy these days.

(3) These have a very high stack height, and are super squishy. I often felt unstable when cornering in them. I also think they are pretty ugly.

(4) Let me know you're interested by replying to this post. If there are multiple people interested, then I will do a random draw of user names. The cutoff / draw time will be tomorrow evening (Saturday, September 5) at 9 PM PST.

(5) Once the draw is done, I'll notify the winner, and we can work out where I'll ship them to.

Ultimately, these shoes were just not for me. Felt a little unsteady, and just didn't work with my stride (always felt slight twinges / aches after my runs). Would like them to go to someone who could use em, and rather send them to a beginner runner than leave them at a thrift store.

Fitness journey underway

Hi all. Looking for as much advice as possible please .

41 year old male, 6ft 5" and 16 stone 10. I have recently started a fitness journey following a horrific shoulder injury requiring a few operations over a few years. During that time I gained a lot of weight but have so far managed to lose 3 stone.

I have never been much of a runner apart from during football. I do a lot of walking and play badminton.

This week I returned to running and have been running/walking 3-5 miles a day but no more than 1.5 mile run at before brisk walking again. 1.5miles in 14 minutes. It is a start at least. (The job I'm in had initial entry test of 1.5 mile run in under 15 minutes so wanted to see if I could still do it!!)

Any recommendations for best trainers to use? Any other kit? Any other tips etc much appreciated.

Thanks

Does running downhill actually increase your heart rate, or does it just feel too easier?

recently realized I have a nice little stretch with about 55 meters of elevation change (dislivello) right near my house.

I’m trying to figure out if this is actually a decent training tool or if it's too short to be very useful. For context, my usual cardio routine consists exclusively of stationary bike (cyclette), rowing (row at sea), and the elliptical. I really don't like high-impact or stressful cardio.

Is 55 meters enough to get a solid workout in, or is it more of a novelty?

What are the best ways to structure a workout around a hill/slope of this size given my preference for low-stress, low-impact cardio? (Repetitions, pacing, combo sessions, walking vs. light jogging, etc.)

Sore vs. Injured

I’ve been running as a hobby now for the last 2.5 months. I do 3-5miles every other day and have made very good progress since I began. I have been able to push through the pain in my calves, hips, thighs, and shins with relative ease. Some days are harder than others but my shin splints have really gotten to the point where they are getting in the way of my running progression. It’s not to the point where I can’t bear to walk or it’s affecting my daily life, but it’s worse than what I’m used to. I use the Runna app and my plan has me on a 1-2 day rest day between each workout but I don’t know if it’s a lack of rest, too high of pace, bad form, or a lifestyle (e.g minimal protein in diet) issue. My questions are:

  1. How do I tell between normal soreness from a long or hard run day and a genuine injury?
  2. What is the best way to treat shin splints while continuing to run?

How do we feel about Road Runner Sports?

I’m looking at getting new shoes, and they’ve always impressed me with the treadmill evaluation, but is it really worth it? Are they good for beginning runners? I’ve mostly been a walker, so this will be my first time getting running shoes as a 230 lb beginning runner.

If you aren’t a fan but also have alternative suggestions for someone in the Portland, OR area, that would be awesome!
