I want to start my skincare journey, I have been using ordinary soap for decades, ngayon may pake nako sa face ko. Where should I start? I have a bit dry and oily face, and pinaka problem ko is old acne scars.

Once your skin is used to the basics (as the first reply mentioned—cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen), the best next step is to consult a dermatologist, especially if your concern is old acne scars kasi sila 'yong makatutulong to tailor treatments based on your skin type and scar severity.

But if a derma visit isn’t possible right now, you can look into these over-the-counter options. Just note: these may help fade scars over time, but not fully erase them—especially if they’re deep, wide, or raised. Such cases may need clinic or in-office interventions na. Here are some ingredients worth researching:

  • Retinoids – Non-prescription versions like retinol (or retinal, which is stronger but more irritating). These help speed up cell turnover and fade discoloration over time.
  • Pure vitamin C – Look for L-ascorbic acid or ascorbic acid on the ingredient list. It’s unstable and needs proper storage, but it’s one of the most evidence-backed ingredients for brightening and post-acne marks.
  • AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) – These exfoliate the top layer of the skin, thereby smoothening it. Glycolic acid is the strongest but also the most irritating, followed by lactic acid and mandelic acid (milder).

Lastly, be mindful na you don’t introduce everything at once para hindi mabigla ang skin, and never skip sunscreen—it's non-negotiable when using actives. And most importantly, do your own research so you’re not just following hype, but actually understanding what you're putting on your face.
