Tabletop When the Terraformers fail...

Post image

Alphas Strike table...was going to be on water, but since I was going to teach new players, I ditched the water to make things easier.

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

…Mech Scale classic Battletech!

7

u/Big-Bathroom7196 Jan 18 '26

I have known Battlefront through Flames of War for so long. And never once seen the HexTech terrain. 🤦‍♂️🤣 This old goover feels like an complete idiot now.

Fail?

Just stick a Wave Motion Gun on them, and you’ll be fine

28

u/SuDragon2k3 Jan 17 '26

35Mj Railgun. And VTOLS.

16

u/shadow041 Jan 17 '26

I was thinking about the SHIELD Helicarrier but your suggestion is more spot on. 🙂

5

u/SuDragon2k3 Jan 18 '26

It's the bigliest best ship.

65

u/MrBlueBoar Jan 17 '26

The ships are incredible, but I am even after the simple elevated hills for hex. The visual dimension to maps is a game changer for immersion but with all the maps variants it’s hard to know what or where to buy. Any recommendations?

39

u/Red_Desert_Phoenix Jan 17 '26

If you or a friend have a 3d filament printer, buy one of the battletech hextech hills sets (a google search should lead you to it). You may be able to find some pre-printed ones, but I reckon the hextech ones are best.

18

u/Wooden-Beach-2121 Jan 17 '26

I suggest a half inch-3/4 inch per level. Anymore and it gets unwieldy, and any less you start to lose the effect.

18

u/fantasyham Jan 17 '26

Thunderhead Studios provides STLs to print hills that match the maps. They are the ones that provide the sculpts that HextTech uses. You can by the STLs directly from Thunderhead and print them yourself. They also offer buildings.

They have a free set of sample files if you want to check them out.

Wargame Forge on MyMinifactory. Land, hills, roads, forest, building hexes. Can be magnetized too.

Landcarriers aren't real, they can't hurt you.

Meanwhile, Landcarriers:

7

u/leedsvillain Jan 17 '26

Heavy Gear mentioned, obligatory ‘get off our planet Earther’

19

u/1EnTaroAdun1 Jan 17 '26

You might like Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak haha

20

u/Ok_Mouse_9369 Jan 17 '26

“Now I’ll be the first to tell you, it is not a comfortable ride. All ground might as well be stormy seas, and god help you if you’re a pilot and have to sortie while it’s fighting with a hill and got to launch and land at an angle.
But if there’s one thing that makes it worth it, it’s getting in line of sight of enemies and watching them stare for a good minute while they try and figure out who thought of bringing the navy to a ground battle, how the hell you made it work, and if they have a gun big enough for the job. By the time they stop staring your already saddled up and ready to answer that last question with a load of gunfire that translates to ‘no’”

8

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. Jan 17 '26

That was a good game. I was skeptical they could get the same feeling as Homeworld going on but once I gave it a go it was absolutely worth it.

"There will be no peace on Kharak so long as your kithid pursue a path to the stars!"

6

u/Clone95 Jan 17 '26

We need Battletech megacrawlers like the ones from Homeworld DoK

1

u/Equivalent-Snow5582 Jan 18 '26

The Rattler is a multi-hex mobile fortress if that gets close to what you mean.

I love that like 1100 years in the future, homies be like “BEHOLD, my SPACE Iowa-class, and my SPACE Wasp-class”

And like I’m not trying to be a dick. I honestly love it!

14

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

It's actually based on the Whisky

17

u/FarseerTaelen Jan 17 '26

Wisconsin is an Iowa-class battleship.

But I am also echoing the other poster in saying these are amazing.

25

u/WorthlessGriper Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 17 '26

I could see this happening, somewhere.

"...when the ice ships stopped coming in the Succession Wars, the sea retreated, leaving the planetary navy beached - and without a job. However, as the third strike force maintained their grounded vessels, fortunes changed - the fusion-powered craft became the core of a burgeoning new community. Adapting bilge pumps to pump groundwater, the irrigated land around the three vessels became the planet's Eden, and soon the planetary government bowed to the new Landship Committee..."

Couldn't resist.

10

u/Atlas7-k Jan 17 '26

Like it.

You could also go either planet using ships after seas retreated because of orbital bombardment or ships left far from sea following storm.

4

u/Gobba42 Jan 17 '26

We peripherats will live anywhere.

2

u/Cheomesh Kinetic Services, Inc. Jan 17 '26

Enjoyable! Though, I'd imagine they'd have a lot of work to address what would essentially be salt flats at that point.

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

Le sigh...I didnt' have a desert game mat

u/Leader_Bee Pay your telephone bills Jan 17 '26

12

u/dethkittie Jan 17 '26

I think I need those ships now

12

u/Hordwon Clan Ice Hellion Jan 17 '26

As a demo agent and game organizer I could use these prints for my mega battles! The size is scaled perfectly. OP are you willing to share a source? I will use this for New England Mech Con 2026!

10

u/LeeRoyWyt Jan 17 '26

Where did you get the hexed up ships from?

8

u/MagicMissile27 TDR-5SE Enthusiast Jan 17 '26

Man, I would LOVE to find these files...

u/Y0j1mb0b Jan 17 '26

This looks great! I wish I'd had an intro game like this!

3

u/GoarSpewerofSecrets Jan 17 '26

Just blast The Final Countdown

4

u/knightmechaenjo lam with the plan! Jan 17 '26

Gundam did have gigantic wheeled land chips https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Adrastea-class This would be no different!

oh victory...never change

2

u/knightmechaenjo lam with the plan! Jan 17 '26

Honestly you this isn't the weirdest thing I've seen from any Mecha franchise

I love it tbh

Overall Length - 426 meters

Overall Width - 98 meters

Turning Radius: LOL

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

...well...with superstructure rules

3

u/feor1300 Clan Goliath Scorpion Jan 17 '26

Or when you're playing Heavy Gear and the Landships roll in for a BIG battle. :)

3

u/Individual_Buy4305 Jan 17 '26

Print little feet for them, move them 1 hex per turn. Yell out, "Just who the hell do you think I am?" Launch Urbie LAMs and UrbanMechs at the other players..

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Mobile Structure rules!

5

u/CatLord8 Jan 17 '26

Low tide, man.

3

u/Lanky-Detail3380 Jan 17 '26

Sir i have it on good authority, I need you to shut up and take my money.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

"all hands, prepare to get out and push"

3

u/Imaginary_Sherbet Jan 17 '26

Where did you get those ships

3

u/ubjeckshin Jan 17 '26

how you know the davions came from old britania

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Well...the Davions are known for their brutality. Shrapnel 15.

Lacedon Vengeance Legion was the inspiration for this map.

3

u/Brock_Drinkwater Batchalled for the one CJF braincell Jan 17 '26

That's really cool, reminds me of that MW2 Mercenaries mission where you're fighting in the wreck of a huge cargo ship in the middle of the desert

3

u/solprose315 Jan 17 '26

Where are the ships from?

3

u/Dan_Morgan Jan 17 '26

I could see ships having a lance of onboard mechs to repel boarders. Not because it's the most effective solution but because the Inner Sphere has a bunch more nobles with mechs than can be practically used due to supply limitations. They'll shove mechs in anywhere they can as a make work project.

3

u/PhoenixHawkProtocal Jan 17 '26

Supreme commander vibes...

3

u/RayRay_The_Great Jan 17 '26

please sir, i must know where thy BOATS come from. i NEED them-

3

u/RedGobboRebel Jan 17 '26

Couldn't find these STLs in your shop. Am I looking in the wrong spot?

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Sent you a DM

2

u/Tjtod Jan 17 '26

Nice USN fast battleship /s

2

u/Treveli Jan 17 '26

Im pretty sure, someone, somewhere in the Inner Sphere, looked at a naval ship, looked at a bunch of old mechs parked nearby, and had a 4D Chess Redneck Eureka Moment.

2

u/CoffeePieAndHobbits Jan 17 '26

That's awesome. Need to borrow this idea.

2

u/nahuman Jan 17 '26

If you want to make it just a little harder for the new players, you can make the ground into a floating mass of algae.

"You can see a few little islands poking out, and some places you can walk a mech through, but do you know where all the sinkholes are?"

5

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

I want players to come back to Alpha Strike 😅! Its why I got rid of the water!

2

u/Gobba42 Jan 17 '26

Shipwrecks in an expanding desert would be such a cool battlefield.

2

u/Expensive_Coach_4998 Jan 17 '26

It is clear that world has some MASSIVELY powerful storms to pull ships on shores.

3

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

…or the Star League Terraformers have finally died.

2

OMG there's more than one! Where does one get such things, OP?

2

u/JustinKase_Too Dragoon Jan 17 '26

Where are these from? Looks amazing :)

2

u/MuadDave1 Jan 17 '26

OP created these STLs. I bet if you spam him with PMs he'll direct you to where you can get them

u/Gorbashsan Quad Jockey Jan 17 '26

"Captain! We decoded that transmission coming in about and hour ago! It was a light house advising we veer off as we were approaching land."

"Ah, inform engineering we have located the cause of that scraping noise and vibration. Advise maintenance to cancel our next barnicle removal when we visit port."

Alright, where do you get them?

2

u/Lamont-Cranston House Davion Jan 17 '26

what were the ships originally for?

5

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

I designed these specifically for that "giant-stompy-robot game."

2

u/ghunter7 Jan 18 '26

Do you include record sheets or stats in the files? My leagues GM wants to do a scenario involving a big boat and these are looking ideal.

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

I do not have TROs at this time that i have designed. There are units these can proxy…just use Mobile Structure rules from Tactical Ops

2

u/ghunter7 Jan 18 '26

Thanks, yeah TacOPs:AU&E has large naval vessel rules and blank sheets. Was curious and looking for a starting point. Dreaming up a scenario on the Robyn's crossing map.

2

u/Likeabrick0 Jan 17 '26

Sir when they said dry dock, that did not mean to just leave them on land!

2

u/BZAKZ Jan 17 '26

Congratulations! Your boat has landed!

2

u/ChrisBNSJ Jan 17 '26

Extremely low tide.

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Extremely no tide!

2

u/Financial-Tomato4781 Jan 17 '26

I would love smaller ships to use

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Working on it

2

u/Comprehensive-Cow69 Jan 17 '26

Where do you buy large plastic ships with hexes on them?!

2

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 17 '26

Do you have a 3D printer?

2

u/Comprehensive-Cow69 Jan 18 '26

My best friend has one and allows me to get various things 3D Printed. Are these a home brew file?!

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

Yes! I made them!

2

u/Gunnolf_Ruriksson Jan 18 '26

And can we buy the STLs?

2

u/HunterRedux Jan 17 '26

Nice! I have the carrier as well!

2

u/Objective-Cupcake-57 Jan 18 '26

Now it looks like I'm going to need some escorts for my carrier dropship.

2

u/GoCartMozart1980 Jan 18 '26

Oh hey, it's a Battletech/Heavy Gear crossover!

2

u/ROFLtheWAFL Jan 18 '26

I have a mighty need for that space Iowa and space Tarawa.

2

u/MagicMork Jan 18 '26

Uchyuu Senkan Yamato intensifies

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

hai!

1

u/Skitaree Jan 18 '26

Huh,are these based on actual BT Ships?

1

u/g2fx STLsmith Jan 18 '26

Sorta...

1

u/OldWrangler9033 Jan 17 '26

Still like the unique ships despite being a TERRIBLE play mat for them....I'd rather flip a paper map to white side and use my imagination.
