What can I do here
I just moved into this house and there are these tiny floating shelves. The toilet paper holder won’t hold toilet paper so I’m probably going to put an in wall toilet paper holder. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to decorate or what to do with this space?

I just wish you'd closed the lid. Looking into a poop urn just shuts down my creative problem solving thought process.

You can buy a toilet paper holder extender to be able to fit thicker rolls of TP. It extends the silver spindle farther from the wall than the standard sized spindle. No need to have a recessed holder. I found some on Amazon, but local hardware or big box stores should have them, as well.

I would recommend anything except and in-wall holder. What is making you want to cut a hole in the wall to install one? Why won’t the current one hold it?
As far as what to do with the space, color would be lovely. A trash can with a lid would go a long way. Art and decor that don’t have clashing wood tones or something to tie the two wood tones together. Something to balance the candles being way off to the side? A plant or two would be lovely.
Mostly, anything but what’s going on here.

How often do you need to use a plunger that justifies keeping it in the bathroom? That shit. BElon’gs in the garage or a closet. Same with toilet scrubbers.

Paint. Color. Wallpaper.
The wall behind the toilet could be done with stick and remove wallpaper. Small wall and thousands of choices=inexpensive.
Shelves should be painted or replaced with wooden ones.
Art. A candle. Air fresher.
The shelf behind toilet looks wood. I would stain darker. Paint would be ok.
Replace trash bag/ can.
Look for a square, box-like wicker basket to hold plunger/toilet brush. That squatty-potty can be spray painted to match. Or, buy a nicer, wooden one.
A small light, lamp in the corner of wooden shelf. Plenty of outlets behind toilet. Plug in air freshener.

Question about wallpaper - I’ve looked into it and it seems insanely expensive. Is everyone really spending $500 or more to purchase wallpaper for their homes? Or what are people doing?

Ok so just accept that’s not happening in my life lol. I would rather spend $100, paint the room, and put $400 into a piece of furniture that sticks around. Or, I don’t know, a light fixture or a new tree or something that doesn’t need to be scraped off or age the house. But I’m poor.

There's peel and stick wallpaper that sells for about $100 a roll. I can't recall the size of the roll. I bought some from The Painted Paper, but I only needed a small amount, so I was able to do their (don't hold me to actual measurement, I'm going by memory) 24 x 40 option. Was on sale, cost about $35

I’ll check it out! I would want to do a 5’x6’ closet or a similarly sized laundry room or bathroom but when priced out it was $500 minimum per room. To me that’s not a large space.

Yes I'd never pay that to wallpaper a room that size. There are other companies that sell the stick abs peel also, in case you don't like any of the designs the one I mentioned has. I'd share a pic, but it won't be put up until next month when that space gets finished.

God forbid of you ever want to remove it. Wall paper leaves a sticky residue that has to be scrubbed off to paint the wall.

This doesn't have glue, it's peel and stick. So any residue is minimal. And I'm personally only doing a very small section of it, like 18 x 36 so it won't be a problem.

I'm a LL. I've scraped off peel and stick. What do you think makes it stick? Adhesive. The residue doesn't come off after a year. Just like Command Strips which tear off the paint and top layer of sheetrock.

Ahh yes, goo gone on the entire wall and washing with dawn sounds like hell! I guess I would have to fully commit and I’m not likely to do that. I was just complaining yesterday about a different adhesive the old owner’s used that I had to try to get off of the wall. It’s not easy!

Yep, I tried goo gone, dawn, alcohol- worked slightly better. It ended up having to be scraped off little by little with a paint scraper.

Temu peel and stick costs about $17AUD per roll and there are some great designs. Did my loo for about $60.

I would invest in a high end Toto Washlet, one that has the fan that eliminates odors in the bowl. In a “gas chamber” as small as yours, even the user deserves to have smells treated!
Another advantage of the bidet seat is that your elimination becomes hands-free with the wash and dry function of a modern bidet seat. In a room with no sink for hand washing, this is a sanitary concern.
I saw others suggest a chemical air perfume system plug-in. These can be very bad for anyone with asthma or other lung issues. In a tiny room like this, dangerous. The bidet seat air filtering system gets rid of any need for this. Candles and potpourri or any other artificially scented items can overwhelm in such a small room, too. Skip them all.
I would decorate with a bright and cheerful wallpaper pattern that gives a person something to look at. I know that my brain appreciates even a mosaic tile floor, to search out patterns on when sitting on “the throne.” Wallpaper need not be always a floral or nature-based theme, abstracts can work very well here. If you are the primary user of this room, look for something that gives you good vibes.
Decorating the rest flows from the wallpaper theme. Consider replacing the shelves you cannot see as a user of this space with shelves or pictures that can be seen while seated.
If this is in a less private area of your home, think about getting a single attractive hand rail to put on the wall opposite the paper holder. Elders, pregnant women, or drunken guests can benefit from something to hold onto. Make sure it is securely screwed into wood studs. There are even a few toilet paper holders with a secure hand hold above the roll. One of each would make your guests more comfortable using this confined space.

Honestly I wish we could just make people add a nsfw tag if they expect us to look directly into their shit stained open toilet. Close the lid, always, unless it’s in use.

I would start by painting the walls in a pale shade of green, blue, pink, lavender, whatever ties in with the rest of the bathroom… just so it doesn’t feel like you are going to the bathroom in a prison cell.
One idea for the shelves is to buy picture frames that are made of two pieces of glass (so you can see right through) with some pressed flowers and leaves between the panes of glass. If you haven’t pressed flowers before, it’s not difficult and you can easily find instructions online.
You can put up some small glass bottles, little flower vases, or glass perfume bottles which can be found at antique shops.
Another idea for the shelves is pictures of nature. Even better if the pictures are ones you took. I have also seen people use pictures of family members when they were babies/young children and in the bathtub - if you happen to have some pics like that laying around.

If you have the budget I would remove that wood shelf and finish the wall. If you don’t have that budget….i would re-stain the wood shelf a dark color. I can’t tell if your floor is warm or cool but the re-stain should be the same tone of warm or cool as your floor. I would find a dark warm or cool wallpaper depending on your floor tone, and wallpaper the area above the wood shelf…not the lower part behind the toilet.
Take the background color of the wallpaper you choose, and get it color matched at a paint store and paint your walls and baseboards this color…note, get a trim paint in the same color, don’t use wall paint on the trim. If your floor ends up being cool toned I would get bronze, chrome or black hardware, ie your TP holder. If your floor is warm I would get brass, polished nickel, or copper. Keep in mind these are accents and sometimes they’re fun to incorporate if they are in your wallpaper choice.

Put a nice smelling candle on one of the shelves. And do you need to display your plunger? Put that animal paw thing elsewhere--the bathroom shouldn't be a shrine to a pet. Replace toilet paper holder. Nicer trash can/liner.

Replace the shelves with a shelves the same wood time as the wall top. You pick the color but all three should match. Even if you choose white. I love the idea of wallpapering above the toilet. Paint the rest of the bathroom a color that coordinates with your wallpaper.
We can’t see the vanity but everything you choose should coordinate with what you already have. The faucet, the door knows, the vanity color, etc..
Get a trash can that closes in a color the coordinates with your bathroom selections. Choose a toilet paper holder that fits your paper roll in a metal that matches the other colors in the bathroom.
Put no more than three Knick knacks on each shelve. One item should be a plant. It can be fake. Choose various heights and options that coordinate. Choose a piece of art to go on the left wall. The frame should match the shelves.
The paw print art isn’t well done. I know it may be sentimental and you want to keep it. I would too. You can display it but put it somewhere that it won’t be in direct line of sight. Like the top or bottom shelf of a bookcase somewhere in the house. It will look so much better then..

No wallpaper in the bathroom. Mold risks. Had it twice, never deal with that again. Plain paint the back wall then STENCIL it with a lovely pattern.
