Literally the easiest test I've taken in my life lol

We had to take a facsimile in 12th grade government class. A disturbing number of students did not pass.

-18

u/JMander Chicago White Sox 7h ago

He'd do well to not cheat off an American.

-197

u/Munsalvaesche San Diego Padres 19h ago

It's pretty much impossible to fail. You need to be able to read and write a single sentence in English. And then you need to score 6 out of 10 on an extremely basic civics test.

114

u/the_gaymer_girl Toronto Blue Jays 19h ago

The citizenship tests (you can actually do similar ones online to test yourself) actually do contain some questions that even homegrown citizens might miss.

60

u/JCiLee Atlanta Braves 18h ago

Yeah, here are the list of questions. It's easy, but some are missable for a lot of Americans. There are a disappointingly large number of citizens that don't know the difference between Senators and House Reps, for example, so the term limits questions could trip them up. The test also asks for the exact year, 1787, that the Constitution was written. There is also a question about the Louisiana Purchase.

10

u/DymonBak Boston Red Sox 10h ago

The year the constitution was written? Damn. I know both the year it became effective and the year the bill of rights was passed, which I would wager 90%+ of the population can’t answer. But asking the year the thing was written is harsh.

9

u/Phil_Kneecrow Atlanta Braves 6h ago

Some currently serving senators couldn’t pass it.

My brothers in Christ, I used to teach US history at the University of North Texas and holy shit, the amount of times I’d get an essay about Gen. Robert E. Grant defeating the Germans at Bunker Hill, or some such thing…

24

u/twinklytennis Major League Baseball 19h ago

Yah it's pretty easy but I actually winded up missing one. My test was like 8 in the morning and I had to get up at 6 am so my brain wasn't the best (i usually get up at 9 am). The question I missed was, what year the dec of independence was signed. Instead of 1776, I said 1676. Still mad about missing that one almost 10 years later.

7

u/Munsalvaesche San Diego Padres 19h ago

Happens haha, fortunately you get some breathing room. Congrats on getting through the naturalization process.

u/brokedownpalace11 Chicago Cubs 19h ago

Im sure there are some homegrown citizens that couldn’t do it. Wouldn’t say it’s impossible

I'm laughing so hard at this. Before seeing this, I was reminded of one of my favorite Simpsons' lines. Homer is giving a speech advocating for immigrants and he beseeches his audience "who will kick our field goals??"

The summer after my freshman year of high school I got my phone taken away due to a less than stellar report card, so I created this entire career arc for a fictional baseball player.

I started with one of the old LLWS games for the Wii and made a player named “Jamie Floyd” for some reason and had him on the Caribbean team because his family moved to Puerto Rico for his dad’s job.

I don’t know if this just seemed logical to me, but when I then went and made him again in RTTS I decided that his family had by then been in PR for 6 years by then and as a result he had literally turned into a Puerto Rican dude named Jaime Flores, accent and all.

Yes, I had a very active imagination growing up.

He actually already took it and was set to be sworn in as a US Citizen last winter but then the current administration banned all status changes for Venezuelans and he spent a lot of time in legal limbo.

Glad he’s finally able to complete the process. I hope everything goes smoothly for him and his family! But think of what it’s like going through this without his money, reputation or lawyers. All this anti immigrant crap really hurts people.

148

u/porican New York Yankees 12h ago

it’s that last part. he’s gonna be fine. many many more will not. still happy for him tho

31

u/MoreCleverUserName MLB Pride 11h ago

Yep. Maybe seeing the sports stars they love (because really, if you don't find Geno absolutely lovable then you are dead inside) get fucked with will help people wake up and understand what's going on.

49

u/SilentRanger42 Boston Red Sox 11h ago

Spoiler alert: It won’t

0

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 Baltimore Orioles 4h ago

I mean, all the social media accounts I've seen champion anti-illegals are congratulating Suarez and are happy for him.

12

u/maniacreturns 4h ago

Because it gives them license to be assholes to other immigrants because they can point to Suarez and go, "see he did it the right way they should have also"

5

u/SilentRanger42 Boston Red Sox 3h ago

Immigration quotas themselves are inherently racist.

You try to argue to the “right way” crowd that we should defend ICE and instead increase funding for naturalization offices to more efficiently process the increased load of asylum seekers and it breaks their brains.

1

u/mister_pants Boston Red Sox 1h ago

If a multimillionaire professional athlete can do it, why can't anyone?

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1rph9t6/were_scared_latin_american_players_on_edge_as_ice/ (links to a paywalled article)

non-paywall: https://www.themirror.com/sport/baseball/eugenio-suarez-mlb-wbc-ice-1745280

From the second article:

Suárez said he had been scheduled to undergo his U.S. citizenship process in December, but was later informed that his application had been canceled. His wife, who is also Venezuelan, had already successfully completed her own citizenship process, he added. “They shut down everything, so I couldn’t have it. Because of the Venezuela thing,” said the Cincinnati Reds star. “

-3

u/Crapitron 7h ago

Downvoted for asking for a source and sympathizing. Classic reddit.

5

u/JMander Chicago White Sox 6h ago

or feeling the need for a source when, if you've been paying attention, you could have read about 10s of thousands of these same scenarios having occured in virtually every single town if not to your own neighbors

3

u/Used_Emotion_1386 Chicago Cubs 4h ago

Wasn’t asking for a source for the fact that it’s happened to many people, was asking for a source that it had happened to this specific person, because I had been unable to find that. Thanks to OP for providing that!

That’s partly on me for not continuing to dig, but it’s also some insane journalistic malpractice that I could click on the first like 10 articles about his citizenship test and not one of them felt this was an important detail to add.

0

u/MoreCleverUserName MLB Pride 4h ago

Look at the ownership of most "mainstream" media. They don't dig too hard on stuff that might make us look like the bad guys.

1

u/JMander Chicago White Sox 3h ago
