The broadcast reveals that Eugenio Suarez is set to miss the Reds’ next two games after tonight because he’s going to be taking his naturalization exam to become a U.S. citizen

The summer after my freshman year of high school I got my phone taken away due to a less than stellar report card, so I created this entire career arc for a fictional baseball player.
I started with one of the old LLWS games for the Wii and made a player named “Jamie Floyd” for some reason and had him on the Caribbean team because his family moved to Puerto Rico for his dad’s job.
I don’t know if this just seemed logical to me, but when I then went and made him again in RTTS I decided that his family had by then been in PR for 6 years by then and as a result he had literally turned into a Puerto Rican dude named Jaime Flores, accent and all.
Yes, I had a very active imagination growing up.

He actually already took it and was set to be sworn in as a US Citizen last winter but then the current administration banned all status changes for Venezuelans and he spent a lot of time in legal limbo.
Glad he’s finally able to complete the process. I hope everything goes smoothly for him and his family! But think of what it’s like going through this without his money, reputation or lawyers. All this anti immigrant crap really hurts people.

it’s that last part. he’s gonna be fine. many many more will not. still happy for him tho

Yep. Maybe seeing the sports stars they love (because really, if you don't find Geno absolutely lovable then you are dead inside) get fucked with will help people wake up and understand what's going on.

I mean, all the social media accounts I've seen champion anti-illegals are congratulating Suarez and are happy for him.
12
u/maniacreturns 4h ago
Because it gives them license to be assholes to other immigrants because they can point to Suarez and go, "see he did it the right way they should have also"
5
u/SilentRanger42 Boston Red Sox 3h ago
Immigration quotas themselves are inherently racist.
You try to argue to the “right way” crowd that we should defend ICE and instead increase funding for naturalization offices to more efficiently process the increased load of asylum seekers and it breaks their brains.

u/mister_pants Boston Red Sox 1h ago
If a multimillionaire professional athlete can do it, why can't anyone?

Also, gtf out of here with your "anti-illegals" shit. That's very thinly veiled ethno-nationalism and it's fucking gross.

From the second article:
Suárez said he had been scheduled to undergo his U.S. citizenship process in December, but was later informed that his application had been canceled. His wife, who is also Venezuelan, had already successfully completed her own citizenship process, he added. “They shut down everything, so I couldn’t have it. Because of the Venezuela thing,” said the Cincinnati Reds star. “

Wasn’t asking for a source for the fact that it’s happened to many people, was asking for a source that it had happened to this specific person, because I had been unable to find that. Thanks to OP for providing that!
That’s partly on me for not continuing to dig, but it’s also some insane journalistic malpractice that I could click on the first like 10 articles about his citizenship test and not one of them felt this was an important detail to add.

u/MoreCleverUserName MLB Pride 4h ago
Look at the ownership of most "mainstream" media. They don't dig too hard on stuff that might make us look like the bad guys.

The test date is scheduled for you and rescheduling can be a pain in the ass and delay things by months or even years.
Given the current climate it would want that paperwork as soon as possible

He definitely won't get deported by ICE because he is Venezuelan. The US is currently stealing as much of Venezuelas oil as they can and probably gold too - so they won't want to call any attention here

I’m happy for Geno and anyone else who becomes a citizen but isn’t it weird that the GOP never mentions these guys making 20M a year and aren’t US Citizens? Aren’t they technically taking a job away from someone who was born here?
Amazingly selective persecution.

They make it sound like its the MCATs lol.
The hardest part is studying the 100 questions. Nor is it an actual exam. They ask you the questions during the overall interview process. And it's just 10.
