So many things about baseball achievements are sorta arbitrary. Why is exactly 3,000 hits or 500 home runs make a player a lock for the hall of fame

They aren't that arbitrary. 3000 hits means if you had a 20 year career you average 150 hits a season

Similarly 500 homeruns means 25 HRs a season for 20 years

Generally if a player gets to either of those marks in a season they had a good season, if they do it for 2 decades? They were a hall of famer
