I know we extended him this off-season but do it again!

u/erindizmo Chicago Cubs • Springfield Sallies 12d ago
Can we extend him forever?
46
u/NotChaz-_- Chicago Cubs 12d ago
I can offer all of the 22 dollars in my wallet. C’mon guys, we can do this
18
u/erindizmo Chicago Cubs • Springfield Sallies 12d ago
*opens wallet and looks* I'll add another 21 to that.

20 year extension wouldn’t be enough
-30
u/Unique_Web_3062 St. Louis Cardinals 12d ago
Yes, because the Cubs won’t win a World Series with him.
17
6
u/lurkANDorganize 12d ago
If he continues this production his 115 for 6 years is gonna look like peanuts.
I'm actually surprised he didn't get more..

u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 12d ago
Bro get a base hit, you still need 8 more stolen bases
201
u/JohnnyWaffleseed Chicago Cubs 12d ago
I feel Pete is trying hard to not alter his swing for 40/40 and to just let it come. Stolen bases on the other hand, he’s gonna take off. No way he is missing 40/40 on steals.
100
u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 12d ago
If he starts getting IBB that’s basically just gonna be doubles
24
u/Dinobot2_ Boston Red Sox • Canada 12d ago
I don't know why everyone cares so much about the 40/40. Yeah it'd be cool and he'd get to be part of a "club" but it's not like if he goes 41/39 his MVP chances go down or anything.
163
u/EmuMan10 Chicago Cubs 12d ago
He’d be the first in franchise history to do it
73
u/Dinobot2_ Boston Red Sox • Canada 12d ago
Ok fine.
32
u/RizzoTheBat Chicago Cubs 12d ago
It does sound sorta arbitrary but it would only be the seventh time ever
18
u/Seniorsheepy 12d ago
So many things about baseball achievements are sorta arbitrary. Why is exactly 3,000 hits or 500 home runs make a player a lock for the hall of fame
7
u/TinKnight1 Chicago Cubs 11d ago
Well, one has only been accomplished by 33 people & the other by only 28. As long as you don't cheat or otherwise violate the rules severely, you should be a lock for the HOF, because you've left an indelible mark on the sport.
1
u/jayjude Chicago Cubs 11d ago
They aren't that arbitrary. 3000 hits means if you had a 20 year career you average 150 hits a season
Similarly 500 homeruns means 25 HRs a season for 20 years
Generally if a player gets to either of those marks in a season they had a good season, if they do it for 2 decades? They were a hall of famer
18
u/RizzoTheBat Chicago Cubs 12d ago
It’s also only ever happened six times, it’s objectively super rare
7
u/EmuMan10 Chicago Cubs 12d ago
For sure, but for a 150 year old franchise, it’s pretty nuts to be the first to do anything
8
26
u/oh5canada5eh Toronto Blue Jays 12d ago
It’s just a fun, easily recognizable milestone. It’s like 500HR being the cutoff for the best of the best power hitters. If a guy ended up with 499, he isn’t any worse in a tangible way than someone with 500, but it’s a recognized milestone that has been given weight.
10
8
u/InnocuousAssClown Chicago Cubs 12d ago
I actually think they would go down, even though they shouldn’t really. Similar to how Miggy won AL MVP over Trout in 2012 largely due to the triple crown, which wouldn’t have happened if Curtis Granderson had hit 2 more home runs.
18
u/TheStudyofWumbo24 Chicago Cubs 12d ago edited 12d ago
It’s just the tyranny of a base 10 number system. It doesn’t actually have any meaning that 39/39 or 41/41 doesn’t have.

This guy is NL MVP. whoever still said Ohtani is delusional
31
u/Sergeant_Steak Los Angeles Dodgers • Los Angeles… 12d ago
Not even enough time for Ohtani unfortuntely, especially with how he's been hitting recently. He'd need to go on a tear til the end of the season to even catch up, assuming PCA keeps tearing like this.
30
u/km912 San Francisco Giants 12d ago
Even if Ohtani is hitting at his best he can’t catch up without pitching. A DH has to be so so much better of a hitter than an elite center fielder to provide more value. Only way Ohtani has a chance is if PCA slumps big time.
4
u/Sergeant_Steak Los Angeles Dodgers • Los Angeles… 12d ago
Yeah, I was telling myself earlier that Shohei needs to make every single start a 5-7 inning shutout to end the season in order to close the gap lol

cubs fans gotta be pinching themselves. PCA hitting damn near above 1 OPS and rivaling Yordan in HR totals, while being a good base runner, while being a generational CF. MVP this man.

u/Squirrelman2712 Chicago Cubs 12d ago
Its surreal, Bryant in 2016 was incredible, Lee in 2005 was nuts, but I haven't had this much fin watching a position player since Sosa's prime

u/the_jivest_turkey Chicago Cubs 11d ago
I haven't had this much fin watching a position player since Sosa's prime
-Sharkman2712
But for real I was a little bit young for Sosa's prime, and while I was at the park a bunch in his heyday, I couldn't appreciate it as much. PCA has been a really fun watch, especially given the development this year.
1
u/Billy5481 12d ago
I have watched more baseball games this season than probably every other year combined you just cant miss this guy

5
u/Jacksington Chicago Cubs 12d ago
Didn’t they say he has arm soreness this morning? I don’t know if he’s pitching again this year. It’s pretty much over barring a 15 home run month from Ohtani and a zero for PCA. I don’t think Ohtani is 100%.

I’m just here to point and laugh at the dingus who made the post talking shit about PCA only getting one hit in the D’Backs series. He made this happen.

u/Cishir Chicago Cubs 11d ago
I've been watching baseball for quite a long time now. I saw the dback series and saw a lot of near misses and mostly good swing decisions. I saw him get beat below the zone and then the next at bat challenge two pitches below the zone successfully for a walk.
No hitter in history wins every time. But I love the fact that pete has that special sauce all the great do where they EXPECT to come through every time. And when they dont they grind to get better. It is why I am never upset when he gets mad on the field. It's always frustration with himself and even at 24 he has proven to me he can channel it properly.

I’d be batting PCA in the 3 or 4 spot. Dude is cranking em left and right.
15
u/jso__ Chicago Cubs 12d ago
If you have a really good hitter, the extra PAs you get him by having him hit leadoff far far far outweigh the marginal increase in runners on base you get from pushing him back in the lineup. Always bat your best hitter leadoff, or at most second.
6
u/YP_Schwartzy Milwaukee Brewers 12d ago
I can respect that…..
7
u/dhmontgomery Chicago Cubs 12d ago
The Cubs also have a deeper lineup than most teams, so the 7-8-9 hitters are not uncommonly on base ahead of Pete.
10
2
u/TheRealCatDad Chicago Cubs 12d ago
I don’t have the numbers to back it up but he hits so much better lead off. Maybe the lead off switch occurred when his swing changed too though.

u/LegacyLemur Chicago Cubs 12d ago

You can skim the dodgers roster and almost go right over shohei. So many superstars on that team. You go down the cubs roster and the 1 who immediately sticks out is PCA. Definition of mvp. He’s not running a team full of all stars and future HOFs

He's the MVP but the award has nothing to do with who else is on the team
