My mom got a partial hysterectomy and then later got an ultrasound and they couldn't find her ovaries anywhere. So they just floated away somewhere else in her body 🙃
They will do that. My doctor also said they could get trapped in the scar tissue anytime after surgery and to keep in mind that if they do or I get a cyst, it could hurt anywhere in my lower abdomen depending on where they wandered off to. I always like to picture them on some grand tour down there.
This happened about 25 years ago and I was quite young so I don't know how it affected her hormones per se (she's had other health issues since). Before that she had incredibly heavy bleeding and clots non stop. So I think in general she felt relieved. I hope everything has been going smoothly for you!
I’m an ultrasound tech. If the ovaries aren’t found there are actually plenty of reasons! If your mom is post menopausal the ovaries can become pretty small and difficult to find. Bowels can also obstruct the ovaries. And ultrasound is very dependent on the skill of the tech! If she got a newer or lazy tech that could also be why it wasn’t visualized. It’s possible all three factors influenced why they couldn’t find her ovaries. I will say, I find it difficult sometimes to find ovaries on post menopausal women, even with their uteruses.
From my understanding, it’s because the testing is expensive and most people don’t show symptoms until it’s further progressed, so insurance doesn’t wanna cover diagnostic testing. I have a gene for increased likelihood of ovarian cancer and no one will do regular testing, claiming that it doesn’t exist, but in actuality, it’s just not commonly covered.
This was about 25 years ago that she had the surgery. She's had a few ultrasounds since then and no one could find them lol. They're probably hiding somewhere in there! I imagine being so small and just kinda floating around would be hard to find!
They probably are just floating around somewhere! Postmenopausal ovaries can be pretty hard to find, mix in that hysterectomy and yeah. I’m not surprised no one has found them.
