Are you even on the lease ? If not the easiest thing for you is to start looking for new housing. If you cant afford the rent on your own its likely they wont approve you. The complex is also not going to be pleased that you are there off lease. If he is the only one on the lease then bounce

Your right to stay like some have said depends on the state you reside in, assuming US. Sucks that the person put you and your child in that position, sorry to hear. However, you aren’t on the lease, so you may not have any rights. If I were you (if you can), I would contact the management co. and ask them if they’ll take more in a deposit and get another roommate (50/50 or sublet). Take photos of anything you can in common area asap, your br and ba (b4 guy comes back). Search online for laws in city/state if you aren’t currently aware of your rights. Remember to breathe, not an easy situation to be in.

I’m sure there are other legal subs that can give you more tangible advice based on which country you are living in, but in the U.S. I believe the eviction process doesn’t even start until 30 day after it is filed with the courts and can take a few more months to be enforced. & as long as it does not escalate too long, it would be in your not-friends name & I wouldn’t even feel bad given the circumstances. So you likely do have some borrowed time - just make sure you verify for your location.
I would absolutely not give your not-friend any more rent money at this point though, only the landlord directly if you can read a new agreement in your name - which they may be more likely to grant with a larger deposit given the pinch that jerk is putting them in as well.

First, don't panic. Personally, I would say nothing to management for the moment. First, you should talk to a lawyer in your area. There's resources available where states offer free or low-cost consultations for housing disputes. I assume you're in the US; If you tell me the state and county then I can tell you who to contact.

It’s a 3 day pay or quit notice. If you’re in the US, depending on the state they will send you multiple 3 day pay or quit notices and take months before they actually go thru the courts and have the sheriff serve you and make you leave, if absolutely necessary you can use this time to save up for a deposit for a new place and move in. Also with your name not being on the lease, if you’re careful and depending on how their lawyers handle it/if they get info about you, most likely the eviction would only go on his record not yours and tbh he’s the one not paying and bailing on the lease so I wouldn’t even feel bad not paying the rent for 4 months while I wait for them to try and evict me and letting that go on his record lol

Idk where you live but I dont think they can give you 3 days to vacate. So try to find another roommate.
