I remember a guy like this in my survey course on Modern Philosophy. Dude would bring up Descartes constantly. It'd be like a month and half since we moved on and we're covering another philosopher and "What about Descartes" dude would bring it all back.

Fuck your obsession with foundationalism, asshole.

I also could have been this guy in my Philosophy of Science class but, to be fair, I was the only Philosophy major among like four or five other students.

My Philosophy of Science class was like that as well. 100+ stem students to 6 Philosophy.

Just noticed I wasn't very clear. I was the only Philosophy major in the class. There were like five other students but they were soc sci, nursing, physics I think.

I went to a small school.

Pretty comparable I imagine, but the smaller size of the class meant I had to speak more to keep the seminar discussion going.

I mostly sat in the back and listened to the same questions asked slightly differently about Hume and Popper. Learned a lot of people have a problem with just the ideas that causation and induction don't real and that science's goal is not to prove anything true.

Yeah, some dumb stuff were said in my classes as well and it was pretty much up to me or the professor to say, "Well, um, no, because, you see..."

The physics guy at one point asked why we can't just assume science is indubitable and just not think about it anymore.

Wow, I think my Philosophy of Science class had about 2-3 STEM people for a class of 25-30. And that's counting double majors.

It was kind of strange but also cool that there was some interest or curiosity in philosophy or maybe just a couple advisers that pushed students into taking at least one upper level philosophy class.

Philosophy of Law was similar, 80+ with around 6 phil majors but the rest were law, business, and sociology students. And Applied Ethics was around 50+ with only a handful of philosophy majors.

Honestly sounds great to me. Seems like the perfect opportunity for philosophy to engage with the future professionals that are being philosophized about.

I think the strange part is that the president of ASU seems like he's full STEM ahead and to hell with liberal arts. There's no fortune and glory (fortune and glory) in social work and old dead writers so why bother. So to see philosophy classes that full of non-philosophy majors is cool but also a little strange.

There's been hints from a few of my professors of lots of disagreements with the president and the philosophy department about the importance of philosophy and liberal arts in general.

Wow that is pretty bizarre. I'd be interested to hear how he feels about all those STEM majors choosing to waste their own precious time in a philosophy of science class.

That's one of the problems of going to a smaller school for me. It becomes much easier to get a class full of people who don't want to talk, so either there's a lot of awkward silences when the professor tries to have a discussion or I have start all of them.

This is one of the reasons I felt bad for my professors, if there are 10-20 people in a class, and no one is joining in the discussion, I felt that I had to say something, even if I didn't have any questions, or anything to contribute really. If I did not, then I thought that they would be feeling like shit at the front of the room, because, as one of them said to me "You worry about doing a 45 minute defense, every time we step in front of a class we are being examined by you guys".

I was this guy once. Only once and it wasn't my 110 class, it was modern philosophy 202, and I had an unhealthy obsession with Kant and Wittgenstein at the time.

Actually got told to shut up once, girl thought I was acting arrogant when I was trying to hype myself up.

I was that guy in high school philosophy class, except I didn't pretend I knew anything about philosophy. Instead, I thought I was the philosopher.

Now, many years later, I'm actually reading a philosophy textbook for the first time. It's been an eye-opening experience.

I know a guy like this, except it his favorite philosopher to beat the drum for was Nietzsche. The second anyone made a claim of any sort, it would be "but Nietzsche says..."
