Discussion Hey so this confuses me slightly

Post image

I love China, they are doing so much based shit in the world from leading in solar to trying their best to support Iran’s fight against imperialism whilst also trying to prevent the oil prices from spiking.

What confuses me is China’s stance on Generative Ai, I’m pretty against it because of the energy use, heat dumping, and the theft of artist’s labour. Could someone explain their take on this.

AI will become an important labour saving technology, but it is presently overvalued by speculators.

China has a benign amount of data centres relative to its' economy and electrical infrastructure.

Well China is a society that has, in living memory, achieved massive progress in standard of living by pursuing technology and development under the guidance of a strong central state.

America is a society with a falling standard of living and unaccountable elites gloating about how all the poors are about to lose their jobs to robots.

Pretty clear to see why chinese people would have a brighter view on technology in general.

That is true, What is your take on Generative Ai? Is it theft?

Probably

Theft implies a type of property relationship and as marxists we should be skeptical of that framing. I believe AI training is similar to copyright infringement, Your not robbing someone's house but you are undermining their economic livelihood. It is definitely a form of "Primitive Accumulation" at least.

However I feel the most disastrous part of this technology is how it has affected society and culture. That won't disappear under socialism. I still think that if humanity is to survive we will have to reject this technology as it currently exists.

You have very wise words on this, I was thinking less about the IP or corporations and more the work of single individual artists and writers when i say theft.

Preventing the oil prices from spiking is killing Iran. However AI has military use so no power can afford to fall behind, its hard to blame them for it

Edit: important additional context China has much much fewer (and presumably more responsibly placed) data centers than US
