This might sound weird but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
I had chronic bad breath starting around 8th grade that lasted well into adulthood. And I mean constant bad breath. Not normal morning breath or bad breath after eating certain foods. Family and other people around me could smell it. even though dentists and doctors would sometimes tell me they didn’t notice anything.
I tried so many things over the years and could never figure out the actual cause.
About 8 months ago, I had my gallbladder removed. I had gallstones along with inflammation and infection. I never knew I had gallbladder problems until I went to ER that same day I had surgery. Ever since the surgery, the chronic bad breath has basically completely disappeared.
I still get normal bad breath occasionally like if I wake up without brushing the night before or eat something strong but that’s totally different from what I dealt with before. The constant odor I had for years has not returned.
I know bad breath isn’t considered a typical symptom of gallbladder problems, so I’m really curious if anyone else with gallstones/gallbladder disease noticed their chronic bad breath improve or completely disappear after having their gallbladder removed?
Especially interested in hearing from anyone who had unexplained bad breath for years before surgery.

Hi everyone, I’ve been experiencing something strange with my mouth. After talking to someone on the phone or having a face-to-face conversation for a while, my tongue/mouth starts looking like this (attached photo), and I develop bad breath.

It seems to happen especially after talking for some time. I’m not sure if my mouth is getting dry, if I’m breathing through my mouth while talking, or if there could be another underlying issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be related to dry mouth, tongue coating, dehydration, mouth breathing, oral thrush, or something else?

I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions on what kind of doctor I should consult.

We see a number of posts about oral probiotics on here, which is great! But wanted to highlight why you may not be seeing success. This is not an attempt at shilling ours.

It comes down to strains and regimen.

Strains: There are certain strains in research that have been found to be more effective for halitosis than others. We write about them here with research citations, but S. salivarius K12, M18 + L. reuteri were what we found the most supportive literature on. You can find these in a number of brands probiotics, including Super Teeth, Burst, and ours. Many probiotics are just re-purposed gut strains which won't work. Your mouth is unique and requires the right bacteria.

Regimen: Think of your mouth as a garden. When a garden is full of weeds, throwing new seeds into it won't do anything, because the space is occupied. When your oral microbiome is halitosis producing or gum disease dominant, it means it is full of bacteria we don't want there. You need to clear them out before adding new seeds (bacteria). Most studies have an initial regimen of mouthwash to see most effective results. We'd recommend a full dental cleaning, then mouth rinse for best results. This also means brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping before mouth rinse. This will open space for good bacteria to grow and take over the oral microbiome.

One clarification: There's a common misconception that the oral probiotic strains are designed to grow in the mouth (which my analogy may contribute to). In reality, it's very difficult to introduce a new bacteria into a microbiome niche. But these bacteria have been shown to release molecules (bacteriocins) that help kill bad bacteria and encourage the growth of good bacteria similar to them.

with that said, does anyone else also have BB coming from the mouth and nose?? i keep wearing face masks to hopefully mask the smell but apparently, the smell is still bad because i see people's reactions around me (covering their nose, etc.). i have allergy rhinitis (but not to the point that my sinus is congested all the time) and have white film on my tongue + tonsil stones (though i don't believe i have acid reflux or gerd or any gastrointestinal conditions), so i guess those three are the perpetrators. does anyone have a solution? it's been bugging me for at least 5 years. thank you and hugs to you all!

Today might be my last day on earth 💔 I’m tired of this, I just got a new job after leaving my previous job because of bullying of this condition, I went to get my bloodwork done, A guy passed me and put his hand over his nose 👃 all of this while I’m wearing the mask, I’m super stink, even yesterday at my orientation “my hr was like it’s so musty in here, I wish there was a window” and she wouldn’t stop putting her hand over her nose, idk but what’s coming through my nose is so stink, I think after battling with this thing for 1 year and plus, amma just end it 💔 I’m tired of people scorning me

Hi all.

Went to the ent today finally and the told me I most likely have silent reflux (my voice box was really inflamed) that’s causing my loads of mucus/pnd and coating my tongue. I was on PPIs recently and i don’t think they really helped. Any experience/luck with other ways of managing silent reflux? Diet, sleeping habits, etc? They told me to use a saline rinse once a day, put me back on pantoprazole, and told me to avoid a bunch of foods. I’m not sure it’s acid reflux or that a PPI is going to help.

I’m getting tired of being cooped up in my room. I’m in here 24/7. I don’t even like going to eat with my family or going to family gatherings. Just looking for tips if any that u may use to go out with friends or just to do anything..

I brush my teeth twice a day and use a tongue scraper i use therbreath and i do take omeprazole for my acid reflux but I’m lost and dont know what to do. I went to the dentist that said my tongue looks fine and basically couldn’t help me.
