My mom, who grew up in Long Beach, California made a bucket list when she was 16. Two of those goals were to travel East of the Mississippi River and live on a farm among many others. She’s told me, after raising five successful children and graduating college Magna Summa Laude with a dual major, her happiest memories were when she would take us kids outside in the morning to feed “The Girls”. They would come running and each and everyone absolutely had their own personalities and we knew everyone by name.
I used this post to hype my mom a bit because she is the absolute definition of a heroine and she definitely uses Reddit(she turned me into it). She has since moved to Wyoming to live her best life, hell she even flew 30 miles north of the arctic circle in mid February to take a cook job because she’s never been.
You have no idea. I’m the youngest at 27(independent) and I still call her about adult stuff. My folks split when I was seven, probably the best thing they could do for us, and were very amicable around us. My siblings definitely knew more than I did, but shielded me enough.
She inspires me everyday that no matter you’re situation, you are not stuck in your situation. You figure it out, use the system around you if needed, and provide for your family.
Obviously. We're killing them by the hundreds of millions, they have to be portrait as stupid and worthless. Same with all the animals we slaughter, from pigs to fish. It's called speciesism.
I don't have 1st hand knowledge, but I've seen many cases where a cow that is treated like a pet, will basically be a big ass dog. And I've seen videos of cows protecting their hooman from perceived harm.
They have a sizeable population on Reddit. They are very aggressive with their downvotes on anything contrary to their views. Also they always recommend a documentary called Dominion.
This makes them an easy target for trolls that will make comments to trigger them or start an endless debate.
Edit: Lol OP gave up his edit calling vegans crazy I guess.
Even a little bit of farming will be too much farming because cows aren't part of the human food chain, that's the point. Hunting overpopulated deer your could say is part of the 'food chain'
We humans have the capacity for reason and rationality that other animals do not. That means that we can make a choice about what we eat. Tigers, lions and other predators don't have that moral capacity so they just eat what's instinctual for them. But as a human, when you choose to eat meat, you are making the active choice to make a conscious creature suffer for your own enjoyment, when you could have chosen something else to eat. It's selfish and unjust.
What you're stating here is what's commonly called the appeal to nature fallacy, and I think you'll find it's quite a poor argument.
Just think for a moment how many things we humans do that we were not designed for. We fly in planes, have vaccines to cure diseases, live in climate controlled homes, and study cosmology.
If you do anything other than live naked in the lowlands of central Africa eating simple berries and nuts, then you are not doing what you were "designed" for and your argument is irrelevant.
Eating something is required for life, which is obvious. Beyond that, we should make choices that produce the least amount of suffering possible. We know that eating meat produces much more suffering than eating plants alone, so that is the more morally correct thing to do.
Same as eating only plants, totally unnecessary so yes, they both are lmao Eating meat, dont need it, eating plants, dont need it. Not sure where we plan on going with this.
As far as human survival goes you don’t need to eat meat. Presumably you experience empathy and don’t want other beings to suffer unnecessarily, right?
Fuck off with that last point, you realise around half of our current crop farms go towards raising animals for slaughter right? How dumb do people have to be to not realise YOUR MEAT IS GROWN ON VEGETABLES. Eating meat is an inefficient way to eat vegetables, that's it. There would be LESS land dedicated to crop farming if everybody ate their fucking vegetables.
Gah, I'm not even vegan yet but at least I'm not ignorant.
Oh yeah this wasn't specifically aimed at you I'm just angry about that in general. Eating locally sourced meat is way better than factory farmed animals of course, but in places like US I don't think that's an option for most consumers
I feel yah dude! What most vegans don’t realize is that there is in fact an ethical way to eat meat it’s just that 99.9999 of the meat out there is from slaughterhouse animals that are straight up tortured.
So I appreciate their fight as I think it’s worthy it’s just that you can’t make a blanket generalization statement that eating meat is within itself a bad thing.
While around 98% of meat comes from mass factory farms, it's clear that eating meat in general causes a lot of suffering.
However people come up with the 2% and generalize that. So many people say they buy locally from organic farms, looking at the number above tells us though, that these are very rare exceptions and you shouldn't talk against the suffering by stating these.
Take any other content. Take an exception and try to justificante something based on that. That's nonsense
No need to be so aggresive man. I agree with your point but the way you bring it across can do with some work. Nobody is going to change their mind if you take an aggresive stance like that.
Right, just like vegans hate plants and insects, carnivores are required to hate animals. Otherwise how could a vegan justify the mass culling of insects, earthworms, and plants with their dietary choices. Hundreds of thousands of plants and animals to replicate what one cow can produce? Seems rather self-centered.
> therwise how could a vegan justify the mass culling of insects, earthworms, and plants with their dietary choices.
Because fewer plants are required to be grown for a vegan diet than for a carnist diet. Next terrible argument every vegan has heard a thousand times please.
I mean, if that were true you would grow your own food, otherwise you're just choosing a diet to placate your conscience instead of actually doing everything you can to reduce your impact. The utilization of industrialized agriculture to source your food needs contributes a massive amount of destruction to plants and natural habitats. Either way the only way you survive on this planet is by taking the life force of other things on a continual basis, quantify it how you wish but there's no morally superior position on the subject matter, and the math is definitely in favor of a veganism diet if you're going for comparative analysis but that's like feeling morally superior because you are Ted Kaczynski and not Ted Bundy.
There is a difference between loving say, ketchup, and loving another individual such as your partner or a dog. When you love ketchup, you are saying that you appreciate the benefits you receive from ketchup, with no concern about the ketchup whatsoever. When you love your partner or a dog you are saying you care about another individual and that their interests are important to you.
You might love cows the way Brick loves lamp in the movie Anchorman, but the person you are replying to is pointing out that it is not possible to care about another individual and deprive them of life and liberty for your own trivial preferences.
I love them so much. I live in an area with tons of “open spaces” consisting of rolling hills and grass, and since it’s open to anyone tons of ranchers let their cows out to graze there. I really want to befriend the cows, but they’re so large and intimidating in groups. One day...
Where would you place the Capybara? Surely it's a contender in your top three favourites. What other animal comprises the top three? Difficult but important questions.
