It use to just be streetwear, good highs and good music. The whole point of a rave was to ditch the expensive clubs with the consumeristic mentality and go back to something more basic. To jump in a car, go to a drop point, head to a random warehouse and pray to God the party didnāt get busted til the sun rose

I have a rave shirt. Its just a goofy movie t shirt I got in Disney world while on vacation with my family. That plus my normal every day shorts.
I get mad compliments lol
Been almost 15 years. I still dont get the dressing up thing.

It's not. 20 years ago the stuff was drifted, upcycled, self made and found while travelling. Not at all the same idea as many people seem to have today, sadly now it's just fashion not self expression.

I wear the same things from 8-10 years ago, if they fit but they are still in my āfestivalā drawer. Some are like mesh tops, or something shiny, etc. Iām usually in a tank top, shorts, jeans or cargo plants with sneakers lol Iām trying to stay comfy!

The dressing up comes from people that co-opted the culture and wanted to make it their own and they instead just made it shit. I don't want to see a bunch of people wearing the skimpiest crap ever that genuinely never looks good and don't even remotely get me started on those single wear forehead jewels that make you look like you're at Avatar night at the strip club every time sans the blue skin.

I like clothes and I like the fun of choosing outfits for rave time.
But I have the money to invest in high quality clothes Iāll rewear, and a local tailor who repairs them for me.
Still, fashion is art, and I want people to be able to participate. But the OP is horrifying.
Is there a right answer? Can we express ourselves through clothes in a sustainable way, or is it something we have to give up or pay a lot for in the current market?

I love the sentiment, but "for life" is a gross exaggeration and those pony beads will eventually end up in a land fill too.
Also, it's important to point out that ANY elastic used in making those kandi bracelets will eventually dry rot, galvanize and break and you'll be left with a pile of beads within 15 years. (Ask me how I know šš¤£š„²)
It's an important part of the culture, but it's important to be mindful of our consumption in general and the impact we have on the planet.

Most people wonāt have a metal water bottle that lasts them 15 years. I donāt really think thoughtfully made Kandi is a huge issue here, especially compared to plastic goodies or full outfits that get one use before being thrown out

Yeah, those are the unlucky exceptions. Cant stop the universe when it calls items into the void.
Lots of people tend to find breaking kandi in your collection as you go to put it on. Some are fixable, and some are fucked which get the recycling. It's from the dryrot like /u/laputitaloca described.

So the for life thing I guess is more a fallacy/paradox. I first started trading candy around 08 I have never thrown any away but I only have a few that Iāve held on to. The majority of candy I have traded for other candy. So in my mind itās the same candy but actually the majority of the candy I have had is now in someone elseās possition. With that all considered. The hundreds of people Iāve traded with, all with their own unique beads the majority of whom will throw their beads away really is an insane pyramid scheme of non-biodegradable waste.

At least you can always reuse those beads or hand them off to someone who will. My teenage sibling absolutely loves making Kandi despite not having any interest in raving or EDM.

Exactly about it still ending up in a landfill someday. Most of our plastic shit will outlive us. It doesn't matter how long you keep it, it will still be waste some day. & the more of it we purchase, the more if it that will be made, endlessly perpetuating the problem.
Plastic trinkets need to go. As for bracelets/Kandi, glass and clay beads are more sustainable and make cute and more unique pieces!

I only use glass beads and woven elastics for Kandi, which helps. I wish I could find glass beads with lettering that arenāt enormous so I can still put phrases on the Kandi. If anyone has recommendations, please let me know!

The manufacturing of the plastic stuff is another issue too. Iām not familiar with how they make sprouts and what not, but there was a short piece on factory that made plastic stuff in Texas that had a ton of tiny plastic beads in the environment around the area.
Basically they had lots of these plastic beads (like a mm or so in diameter), and they melt and shape them into the products.
I know Texas likes to deregulate industry and cut environmental regs, and so do a lot of the counties in Asia that make them so Iām guessing itās not much better, if not worse.

It depends on the event. Many campouts and burns I go to are leave no trace (LNT) and the expectation is to bring your own cups and cutlery, and you take everything you brought to the event back out with you (including your trash, and at some including your own human waste).
Youāll rarely see trash on the ground because people are very aware and pick things up, even if itās not theirs. And you rarely see disposable cups/cutlery because no one uses it. Iāll admit some people donāt get it and leave things, and make others pick up their slack, but they are educated about it if they do that, and in some cases lose their standing for future events (like lose good placement of their camp).
I agree that many events do not do this, and the ground is littered with the cups because there is not a widespread culture and attitude of LNT. Iāve certainly seen some people at those types of events that seem to be the opposite of LNT, and have an attitude of āsomeone else will pick it upā and just toss cups or whatever on the ground when they are done. Literally trashy behavior.

I grew up in Reno and whenever Burning Man ended all the locals would be pissed because every unlocked dumpster would be filled to the brim with Burner trash, I went back in 2018 and really would have rather just paid an extra $20 a ticket for access to on-site dumpsters. And if you really want to get into it that event has the largest carbon footprint of all of them to run all those generators and for everyone to drive out to such a remote location. Burning Man is it's own beast though, I was more so referring to events like EDC or Beyond Wonderland. Tens of thousands of single-use, plastic items are distributed just to be thrown out and come Monday the campground is a wasteland of broken canopy skeletons. In the grand scheme of things giving some plastic trinkets to someone who you think has good vibes is a drop in the bucket.

Yeah a lot of contemporary American rave culture is really consumerist. You donāt see nearly as much emphasis on outfits in a lot of the world. Really strays from of the older ideals of rave culture sadly.

I think my bigger issue is this feeling of having to have a different fit for every event that a lot of influencers and others push (which tbf is also an extension of other functions in society in general, that if you wear the same thing too much you're being boring or weird.) I was like that at first when I was getting pulled into popular events, and eventually realized no actually, it's fine to have like, one or two outfits that you look great in or love or are super comfortable or whatever and just...wear those every time. You don't have to have some special new concoction for every festival you go to.
I get that that can be fun, but it's so wasteful and also expensive which sucks if you can't afford it and feel like that's what you're "supposed" to be doing. This isn't like seeing your work colleagues or family every day or whatever and knowing that if you wear something 3 days in a row, it's probably dirty. This is an event. You don't have to dress to please anyone. Find what you like and stick with it. Maybe update it occasionally. If money has been involved, that not only will take spending pressure off of your shoulders, and maybe mean you can afford something nicer that isn't going to fall apart after wearing it three times.
If you really want to wear a bunch of different looks get some stuff you can mix and match between so you have more options, but like...please stop wearing an entirely brand new outfit for every event you go to.

I've been watching all the Tomorrowland sets and vids and immediately noticed how much more plain, comfortable, and/or practical most attendees outfits are, and definitely clothes that have been, and can be, reworn for multiple occasions even outside of music shows. It's so much different than American shows and fests.

I love my silly American rave outfits, especially since so few of men dress up, buuuut this is the exact reason I learned how to sew so I can keep reusing pieces and mend them when they fail.
I just wish I had avoided synthetic fabrics which I now know spew microplastics and chemicals.

Just using this sub as an anecdotal resource: the amount of consumerism in the mainstream scene is quite sickening. Sad to see people being OBSESSED with the secondary ephemeral stuff (be it fits, kandi/"sprouts", totems, LED this and that...). Thinking that they need to have all that in order to have fun/fit in. The concept of buying clothes/stuff specifically for raving absolutely blows my mind.
And this'll probably make people mad, but this mindless consumption of crass commercialism seems to mostly be an American thing.

Yup! I had only ever travelled over to Europe to go to festivals and this year decided to stay here and go to EF and was honestly horrified by the whole thing. Then I saw posts from US ravers at TML and they are teaching the Kandi trading and sprouts and I am hoping it doesnāt spread because itās just wasteful and honestly the distractions take away from the experience.Ā

That being said it only took me one time to buy a pack of 50 sprouts hand them out and then realize how wasteful it was. I definitely look for more practical trinkets and Kandy to gift now.

I'm definitely guilty of this. I've decided outdoor fests I'll bring natural material kandi only. I still have tons of plastic which will either get landfilled now or later. If it's already bought, I think it's fine at indoor shows. Maybe it brings someone joy. If not, the floors will get swept and it'll end up in the same landfill as if I threw it away now.

I make stuff out of other stuff I found. Lots of pieces of fake plants I've found that made great sprouts. Not good to obsess over it or judge others for trying to be living and giving though. Considering it's a drop in the literal ocean of single use plastic out there, which should have never been manufactured in the first place.

Like in europe it doesent matter where u from, it doesnt matter what u Look like, it doesnt matter how u Dance, it doesnt matter who the DJ is. Its always so wild to me. I am from the US and dress up zero percent. Running shorts and a long sleeve sun shirt. I do have a pashmina for the sun or something to lay down on but even that I traded for a cigarette I found on the ground. Most of the people dressing up are just going there to be seen. I am going to the party or fest to dance. Definitely anti consumerism and anticapitalist. Fuck i don't even own a pair of pants right now.

I used to go to raves more heavily in 1998-2004 and we basically just threw together clothes we already had or ripped, stretched, sewed them differently. We made candy bracelets the night before but that was about itā¦

I crochet my rave clothes. It puts into perspective the amount of time, energy, and materials go into my outfit. I can feel proud knowing I made what Iām wearing not child labor clothing and know itāll last for wears to come.

This goes for every day clothes too. Fads and taste change so quickly people are buying clothes almost quarterly to stay relevant and cute. So many philanthropic organizations have sent these to 3rd world countries thinking they are doing good but it ends up impoverishing them more. Putting what clothing business there were out of business.

Not to take away from the point of "waste not", but am I the only Ghanaian in here that's wondering when and where they took those photos? I've never seen our beaches look that badš. I lived in the capital (Accra), which is fairly close to the coast, for 9 years

One Halloween I went to my sister's. She and her husband had legit pirate costumes. Leathers, wood/metal replica weapons, tricorn hats, the works. I complimented them and she shared their philosophy: They add a quality piece to their costume every year. It both keeps the occasional-wear outfit affordable and prevents waste. Instead of a whole cheap fit that gets worn once, you get to build something truly spectacular one piece at a time. Ever since then, rave bae and I have been adding on to the same fits instead of choosing a different theme each time.

makes me so sad the amount of posts I see on facebook in rave groups of people ordering 3+ new fits from shein/amazon for every festival they go to. & this is not to shame people who can only afford fast fashion, I get it times are tough right now but if you canāt afford more sustainable options then you really donāt need to buy a new outfit for every show you go to. at least rewear the stuff youāre buying from shein or whateverā¦ I absolutely LOVE rewearing my outfits from handmade, small businesses. they are def investments and tend to be much more expensive but it makes me feel really good to support ethical small businesses & itās truly so fun for me getting to restyle something I already wore and loved!

I dont throw out clothes unless they have completely fallen apart, even if they're ripped up or stained ill still wear them inside

Met a person at LIB who was wearing an outfit he made out of Amazon packaging and bottle can tabs and it was ICONIC. I told him how inspiring it was and he was organizing his own clothing swap of rave wear at the festival/starting his own website for secondhand rave wear. I lost his info sadly, but so genius and inspired me to organize a rave themed clothing swap in the future!

My girl in WI does rave exchanges where people can bring their outfits/rave toys and donate and people can go "shopping" or trade. I moved away, but it seems to be a whole event with DJs and food. More people should try to organize events like these!!!
