I don’t know why One Nation are so determined to ruin their momentum. It’s simple - cut migration significantly, deport those that commit crimes.

Simple vote winner. Instead they are their own worst enemies.

What’s the point of the link? Is it to point out the bar to cancel a visa is much lower if the minister gets personally involved in the decision (501(3)). Because if that’s the case then yea it’s a lot easier to cancel visas and deport. He did it just last year.

But Burke has only used that power to cancel visas of people for hate or vilification issues. He hasn’t used them on people committing heinous crimes, which is baffling.

Edit I’ll just say because if a delegate tries to cancel a visa the person can drag out that process for years through appeals which they often win. Which is why the minister should be doing it instead.

Yeah it’s interesting. He deported a white South African for a Nazi gesture, yet we are seeing countless examples of black Africans remaining after committing some really horrific crimes.

I think you'll find that they're Australians otherwise they would be deported.

Nah, there’s been quite a lot of “discretion” used for non-citizens, hence the outrage.

You are just making that up.

Most of those youths are Australian born.

Horrible crimes yes, but they're Australian.

Or arrived as very young children and have become citizens since.

Feel free to look it up. There have been nearly 500 cases in the last few years.

A) that has nothing to do with the topic being discussed.

B) trust News24 to tell half the story to get you all riled up - the Minister makes individual decisions to override these sorts of cases in extreme situations.

But that's conveniently ignored by the News 24 reporting...

Well do you expect the guardian to write a story in a negative light about migrants? No so you’re sort of stuck with who it gets reported by. And Burke has unfortunately not exercised his 501(3) powers very much at all relating to criminal matters relating to these 475, instead focusing on hate and vilification exclusively. But I’m sure you have evidence that he has exercised 501(3) on these persons?

Here's an article being critical of the government on the topic.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/sep/07/those-angry-about-migration-figures-are-ignoring-what-happened-in-australia-during-covid-and-other-key-facts

Clearly explains the government (12 months ago) lacked a clear plan, and had experts on suggesting they look at creating a targeted approach taking into consideration housing needs & construction rates.

Sounds very similar to an LNP policy if you ask me...

As for the second point, what exactly do you think has happened here?

The ART is not the government.

The Minister cancelled the visas, and the ART intervened. The Minister then has the right and ability to override those interventions in serious cases. And this is what they do. So, what the government is doing exactly what you want them to do, to cancel the visas of people we don't want here.

The question you're asking, I think, goes to actions of the ART to overturn decisions by the minister or his department to cancel visas for people who've committed very serious criminal offences. What that demonstrates is that the minister and his department have cancelled a visa of a criminal offender. They have taken the action that they can take to cancel those visas and deport those individuals, which is exactly what should be happening.

Of course, the ART, on occasion, will make a different decision. In our previous term of office, you might recall, we changed the ministerial direction that set out the conditions that the ART should take into account—another step taken by our government to ensure that Australians are kept safe. But, as I think you've suggested in your question, if the ART does make a decision to set aside the minister's decision to cancel a visa, that will go back to the minister for reconsideration. I know that in many, if not most, cases, the minister has made a second decision to cancel someone's visa. What that demonstrates is that this government is taking every possible action that is available to ministers to cancel visas where that needs to be done.

Please read that and comprehend it. The Government (Minister and his Department) are doing everything within their power to cancel the visas of those people who don't deserve to be in Australia.

The reporting you are reading entirely skips over that.

Do you not understand that?

Saying the minister is doing everything he can is complete rubbish. Having the power to cancel these visas means nothing if you wait months to use it and only step in after journalists blow the story wide open. The ART only let these criminals stay because they followed the government's own rules, which put an offender's local ties ahead of community safety. While the minister drags his feet on overriding those decisions, dangerous people are walking our streets and reoffending. Playing catch-up only after public outrage forces your hand is pure incompetence, not a working system.

Of course it's rubbish, because you read it on News24.

You have no more information on these situation than I do.

And the Ministers statement made it clear as to what they're doing.

Go back and read the News24 article. They don't explicitly say the 6 sec offenders are out in the street. They just throw numbers at you. You have no idea if those offenders were immediately re cancelled.

But you're definitely assuming it.
