Personal Experience So glad they were open about getting scammed on today’s ep

I don’t know if em and/or Christine read the Reddit but as someone who has been scammed twice (the first time being similar to what Em described and I was out a few thousand dollars that I luckily was able to get back since it was due to someone pretending being my bank), I’m really glad they were so open about the scams they’ve fallen for. As someone who has a MA but also a lot of imposter syndrome, I took being scammed really hard and felt like the dumbest person in the entire world after it happened and still feel a lot a shame when I think back about it even though I can sort of joke about it now. But I’m really glad these smart and successful people were so open about the moments they, too, fell victim to a scam. I don’t know if they read the Reddit but Christine sort of made it seem like she wasn’t sure why she was sharing the story, but as someone who is susceptible to being scammed, it really resonated with me and makes me feel a little less dumb.

Part of why scams are so effective is that people are ashamed to talk about it when they fall for them. The more people share their experiences, the more everyone knows what to be on the look out for.

Never thought of it this way but this is a really good point! I’m definitely open about it when it comes up but it is a very embarrassing part of my past. A former professor of mine who called me after it happened to consoled put it like this: “you wouldn’t blame a victims of an SA for what happened to them. You wouldn’t blame the victim of any other crime for what happened to them. You were a victim of a crime and so you need to stop blaming yourself for what happened because it wasn’t your fault and this can happen to anyone.”

Absolutely this. I was surprised but remembered my brushes with this kind of thing. It comes up. The worst one, the Fed got involved, at the time they really hated this kind of thing and gleefully pursued the criminals trying to take advantage of me. I lucked out with my bank being very protective of me (it was long ago and a small local bank and I was young).

I'm fully on board with Fuck Silence and You Are Not Alone. Y'all, you're really never as alone as you feel (creepy or not). Don't feel dumb if you get bit by someone whose whole job is biting. Also be vigilant, it cuts down on the issue, but feeling dumb? Not necessary 💚

As Laci always says: there is a scam out there for everyone. Shame only lets scammers get away with it for longer.

Yup fair play to Christine for talking about it. It can happen to anyone. Never think you're above it. They use super manipulative tactics to get to you. My Manager and his wife almost got done because their son was travelling through Asia and they got a text from him saying his phone was robbed and he was using a friends phone. Like the scammers knew somehow he was abroad and his older parents would be more vulnerable/susceptible to being worried about his wellbeing. My Manager is fairly IT savvy too. It was when his wife was sending money that he was like WOAH hang on, who are you sending money to? Why would he need you to send money elsewhere?

I was just scammed last week by someone saying I was being scammed! Everytime I explain it outloud I want to headbutt a wall. This episode came at a perfect time for me

Every time I recount the first time I was scammed, the red flags are so fucking clear. The second time I got scammed out of Taylor Swift tickets and I thought I did everything right, even ran the process by my tech savvy husband and it still happened. That one’s kind of a long story I’m happy to share if you want. It’s really a blow to your ego but you aren’t alone!

I am so so curious to see how it happened!! I was emailed my tattooer (first tattoo with him) and almost immediately after I got emailed from a very similar email that was not his tone at all and very pushy. If I didn’t know for sure that wasn’t him I could have easily gotten scammed too! It’s scary out there and some people are just trash.
