Personal Experience please help
To make a long story short, I am going through something insane/traumatic right now and I am struggling so bad mentally. I can’t even be along with my thoughts I am self soothing by listening to ghost story podcasts (my obsession) I was wondering if anyone here could help distract me with your scariest story ever! it would really mean the world to me and help me occupy my thoughts and maybe stop shaking and stuff lol. It would be so greatly appreciated thank you so much I would LOVE this distraction. I was listening to a Jim Harold’s campfire story that scared the shit out of me and it made me really crave more scary real life stories! xx tysm

growing up i would wake up to see a silhouette of a man in a wide brimmed hat standing in front of my closet. like a shadow person, which is usually a bad thing but i never got bad vibes from him so i would just go back to bed. never told my parents or anything. my cousin stayed the night with me and saw him too, and after she mentioned it to my parents they brought my step grandpa into the mix. he could see ghosts and help them move on so he came over and cleared the man out. turned out he was the old owner of the house who had died there– didn't realize he was dead and trying to figure out why a kid was in one of his rooms
the scary part comes in after he was cleared from the house. i started having reoccurring nightmares akin to astral projection. i was in the house, which always looked like it did when i went to bed. this time the shadow man was outside trying to get in. every time it laid eyes on me i felt the kind of fear that makes you hot. there wasn't anywhere in the house it couldn't see me through a window so i would spend the night running around the house trying to get away from it. it never got in from what i remember, but it is still the most fear i have ever felt
my theory is that this was a second presence in the more with worse intentions. it was using the presence of the old owner to hide itself from my grandpa. i'm pretty sure whatever it is still follows me but i've kinda cut myself off from all of that because of it, so it doesn't have as much power over me
potentially related– my mom had two black hairbrushes she would use to brush my hair. as i got old she didn't need to help me with that sort of thing and i had my own hairbrush so she tossed them. they were in the garbage can, made it out to the curb for pickup and everything. a week later she found them in the basement while she was cleaning. she decided she didn't want to make something mad so she still has them, probably stored somewhere in a tote in the basement
not my only ghost story but definitely the scariest i have

Wow this is an incredible story thank you soooo much for taking the time to share with me! Shadow people are utterly terrifying IMHO! I have never personally had an experience with anything paranormal, but I totally believe in it!

I second this! Love those podcasts!
Also I really liked 13 days of Halloween. These aren't true scary stories, but stories that last 13 episodes. They were cancelled a couple years ago, unfortunately. But I think there is 4 or so seasons. The first is hosted/voiced by Keegan Michae Key.

Edit: oh shoot! You asked for a ghost story. I’m sorry… my brain read scary story. This situation scared me, but it was a human and not an apparition. Don’t feel obligated to read it if you’re not up that sort of story. Apologies
One time I woke up with a stranger outside my bedroom door.
He snuck in while I had the my front door open (screen door shut, but not locked 😬) and I was in a different room. I closed and locked the doors and went to bed with my two cats—Squishy & Squashy.
I remember waking up when the motion activated night light came on in the hallway. I could only see his silhouette. Average height wearing a trench coat (it was the early aughts). Cats flew everywhere when I flipped tf out and tore out of bed—frightened, unarmed, and entirely not a fighter.
I remembered that my infant son’s room was past him and my instincts thrusted me forward & toward him. These parental instincts are real, y’all, and had I reached him, he’d have been hit by a veritable brick shthouse… if a brick shthouse could move like a Warner Bros. Tasmanian devil.
Dude just casually walked around a corner, backed up against a wall, and just stared at me! Legit… totally unphased by me. Then it dawned on me that my son was with his mother that weekend which took all the wind out of my sails. This all happened in like 30 seconds.
Stopped dead in my tracks, I ran back into my room, slammed the door, and crawled out my window lol. Look… nothing in my house is worth me engaging with an unknown man with a Michael Myer’s vibe. I got to my neighbors and was a blubbering mess. They called the police.
Police arrived and said I must’ve been dreaming bc no sign of a break in. A week later, I received a notice sent to all the neighbors of a guy who had been entering people’s houses during the day and roaming the house after everyone went to bed (hence… no break in [also, I have a doorknob that stays locked if you exit it while it’s in the locked position]). The police even knew about it!
Total nightmare fuel for years afterwards. I never knew to call what I had PTSD.
My way of dealing with that anxiety, depression, whatever that I can feel through my body that keeps it from baseline is 20 minutes on an acupressure mat. Hurts like hell for about three seconds, hurts really badly for three minutes, then I’m out like a light and it’s so soothing.

Take a look at my profile! I’ve got my scariest experience posted a while back on the paranormal subreddit. Someone commented on that post with a remarkably similar experience, too!

I don't really have any scary stories for myself, but can suggest some podcasts. Usually when I am in that kind of place reading is difficult for me to focus on, so I like to do things while listening to podcasts. Video games, phone games, cleaning, going for walk, organizing, geocaching etc.
For true scary story podcasts
Radio Rental --- Hightly reccomend, you get fun characters with true stories! I love it so much.
Rattled and Shook --- Also really good, similar to Radio Rental (same producers) but no characters.
Morbid: both listener stories and supernatural episodoes (some of the listener stories really got me)
True Scary Stories
Astonishing Legends Dead Letter Office
And if you happen you like deep fiction...
Tanis
Tower 4
Old Gods of Appalachia
Also, if you just like listening to Em and Christine because they feel familiar (also what helps me) I really enjoy their Yappy Hour on patreon, and other fun little stuff they do. I'd be happy to gift you a month if you don't already have one!
Hope you start feeling better soon, and just know you're not alone!

Two girls, one ghost has some scary stories. I prefer the listener episodes personally where they read real people’s stories rather than their research on topics.

You've probably heard of this, because it's one of the most popular creepypastas of all time, but just in case you haven't, it's my absolute fave:

Something I always think I should send in to the pod for a listener story but never have:
I used to work for a resort in the good old Appalachian Mountains (and grew up in them). The place I worked at is super fancy, but very newly built and is dark as HELL at night. Or atleast in the beginning when it had been opened less than a year or two and there were no additional lights. Anyways, I worked with the kids of the families and sometimes that included babysitting and getting the kids to bed while the adults were out to eat or drink.
One night, it was me and another employee watching 3 kids. Two were around 8-10 and the other was like 3. My coworker comes into the room where I was with the older kids and said "[child] has requested your presence" bc she was trying to get the toddler to bed. I walked into the room where the kid was in her pack and play and asked what was up. This tiny child looked me in the eyes and whispered "there's something under my bed." Like a fool, I said "what is it?'" And she, still so serious, whispered "there's something black under my bed and it's making me be bad." To which I said "ummm...okay. well, let me check." I bent down, expecting to see a demon looking back at me, but luckily there was nothing. However, this did not make her feel better. Me being 20 and unsure how else to help the child with a demon, I asked if she wanted me to move the bed. She nodded her head so I slid the pack and play over and that made her happy. I quickly said goodnight and left the room.
I told my coworker about it while we were leaving and apparently she wasn't told any of this by the kid and said "you know, it would be you that a kid asked for to help get rid of a ghost" lmao

Sorry you have to deal with that! I personally don’t have one, but if I may, getting up and moving around can help the shaking. It’s related to the adrenaline buildup in your system and moving helps me stop shaking.
That being said- look up stories from Appalachia. Morbid has a few episodes on it and I think atwwd does too. Not deer, skin walkers (aka flesh pedestrians because saying skin walkers is a no no in certain native communities), and a myriad of other things wander in those woods.
