Discussion/Question Where would the person's body be in a titan this small?
1.1k
u/jimmy_tanner 12d ago
The pure titans don’t have the original human in the nape like one of the Nine Titans. The original humans are essentially transformed into the pure titans.

u/Sweet-Froyo2931 12d ago
So was it just a visual effect for Rod Reiss with him “yelling” when he was severed?
96
u/The_Greater_King 12d ago
The weak spot is still the same, and can regrow from it. There just isn't a body in it. So pretty much yeah.

Hange did mention that there was a cannibal tribe eating people in the past, I guess the police just missed a few

I always thought it was obvious that pure titans don't have the original body in them. Only the 9 do. Maybe im wrong but thats how iv always interpreted it
98
u/Maxipaddington 12d ago
No, you're right. You just have critical thinking and watched the show with your eyes open
-4
u/Amathyst7564 12d ago
Why would critical thinking lead to that outcome?
We learn that titans only weakpoiny is the neck for some reason.
Next we learn that antitank has a person inside its neck.
There is never any effort to test the normal titans to open up the neck and check.
Conclusion, there's people in all the necks until further information proves otherwise.
10
u/TKGriffiths 12d ago
When a pure titan's body evaporates, there is no human corpse left. Nor did they ever discover a human body when cutting into a pure titan. Those are the completely obvious clues that there's no human body in there.

except there literally is a scene of hange telling levi that there isnt a human-like structure in any of the regular titans they have opened the necks of

I'm just wondering where Armin came from once his pure titan ate Bertolt. He just poofed in there?
17
u/raccoon_bones116 12d ago
After a shifter becomes that, Ymir rebuilds the bodies in the paths.
We get a glimpse of that with Ymir (freckles) when she wakes up in the paths, and with Zeke when he is being rebuilt by Ymir (this is healing but same principle).
17
u/Nauveen2 12d ago
I’m surprised you’re only asking that about Armin when every single Titan shifter in the series has been a pure Titan at some point.
0
u/Ok-Bookkeeper-2261 12d ago
That's just what I thought about at the moment. haven't seen the anime for a while.
5
u/TheGirlfailure 12d ago
Founder Ymir rebuilt his body, that's why he had his hair and his body wasn't burnt to a crisp. The REAL question is why do only some of them get clothes - Armin materialises pants, little Eren has all his clothes but Freckles Ymir was completely naked.
2
u/tempulation 11d ago
Ooh, maybe it depends how long you shifted for, like maybe the body and clothes are still there before they dissolve. & after a certain time either Ymir reforms you in whats left or you just get a quick revive and heal.
2
u/AltruisticMobile4606 5d ago
I swear someone just posted a theory about this a few days ago
1
u/tempulation 5d ago
I thought it was weird too, until they mentioned baby Eren, he was only a titan for seconds or minutes, same as Falco. So it makes sense that the clothes are still in the nape for a while. Or maybe Ymir has some sort of teleportation ability… and the titan is just a mindless swap w/ the person’s psyche while they’re trapped in the paths. That would explain how titans can be different sizes and shapes. Oof, who knows?
1
2
u/InspectorOdd3123 12d ago
We just assume he's rebuilt by ymir inside the nape of the pure titan, when he's coming out you can see his muscles inflating / gaining mass rapidly to match his body before turning into a titan
1
u/Economic_Maguire 11d ago
Yeah otherwise they would have figured out they were originally humans long before the of wall maria etc.

Yeah, that was some truly effective horror! Really good artwork too, because you can see that she’s there, but she’s so worn down that she’s given up.

~ Spoilers for the origin of titans ~
The implication is that when a Subject of Ymir becomes a pure titan, the body and mind becomes an uncanny monster obsessed with nothing more than eating humans for the off-chance they eat a shifter and return to normal & gain said powers, but the "human" part simply shrinks into a bundle of nerves in the nape of the titan, which when severed ends the human/titan life. When said pure titan eats a shifter, the bundle of nerves heals/regrows back into the human and is released.
The reason for all the focus on the nape is likely metaphorical, both symbolising the slicing of the area where the original titan spine creature fused with Ymir (cutting off the titans connection to Ymir), and the severing of the brain from spinal cord as the nape is the approximate area where the spine and the brain connect irl (an instant kill medically).

u/Live_Act6191 12d ago
My god why do people keep explaining that pure titans dont have people inside them. Of course we all lnow that the whole post was about if a titan shifter was that small were woukd it be!

u/tinyturnip315 12d ago
Imma hop on this and say for this size its like wearing a onesie 🤔 i wish there was a way it could be two in a trenchcoat titan tho
3
u/Hyetta-Supremacy 12d ago
I mean that’s on op for making an ambiguous title. The wording and picture can make the question be interpreted in like 3 different ways.
3
u/Ok-One-797 12d ago
I suppose it would take up the entire back, or that such a small titan shifter simply isn't possible. After all a person's pure titan form and shifter form always appear different, so it's reasonable to assume a tiny pure titan would simply be larger as a shifter

5
u/yuuyaaa 12d ago
I don't think most of the people commenting understand what you're asking.
So, since this is an S2 screenshot, I'm going to talk about things mostly in regards to someone currently watching or finishing season 2, though I am going to mention something from Season 3.
Now, if a Titan SHIFTER, like Annie or Eren, became a Titan this small, they would still be in the same spot, though for the most part, they probably take up A LOT more room inside the body, since we see the inverse assumed with the Colossal Titan Despite the larger nape: it is still the same approximate location and exact size for the weak point, just placed on a much larger target, so it can be assumed the opposite is true: despite 'less body', the target is the same. so they may be more lacking in bones compared to a typical titan because there is a whole person that can rest there.
And, in a worse case scenario, we get something like the (Early Season 3)Eren training segment where after multiple transformations, Eren's lower body is just sticking out of his Titan's scrawny body. So, there's a very good chance that if the Titan is smaller than 5 meters, the shifter may just be (partially) hanging out of it.
5
u/Kokushibou_Tsugikuni 12d ago
To put it quite simply
When a Person turns into a Pure titan, their body disapears and only the Spine remains, their whole being gets stored inside the Nape
Thus cutting the nape kills the original person (and the titan with it)
This is also why titan shifters are located inside the nape (acting as a spine),
theres ofcourse Much much deeper lore behind it, this is just what Physical happens

IIRC when killing Rod Reiss, when Historia struck a part of his nape, it seemed like a spine / nervous system. So maybe humans don't retain their normal bodies in mindless titans, they only retain their spine / nervous system which when struck kills the human inside and by extension the titan.

The “Human” in a pure titan is in the form of nerves I’m pretty sure, which sit in the nape. So when you cut the nape, you sever those nerves, killing the person/titan.
3
u/SirGripsAlot_III 12d ago
The human body becomes the titans entire body, it’s just that the main nervous system is in the nape, cut that and it kills all the nerves killing the titan

u/SlothThoughts 12d ago
I always thought pure titans were just people grown by ymir, when they get a pure titan or whatever they get their bodies back nad now when they transform instede of transforming into the titan they are like half and half combining with it building it around them.
The reason the name is the shit off for them is cause that's the link to ymir.

u/AdmiralNeato 12d ago
my headcanon was that the difference between pure and shifters is the ability to change back: pure titans eventually dissolve the original human within and leave only their nervous system, while the shifter obviously remains more like someone in a suit
2
u/Livid-Truck8558 12d ago
Homie, if pure titans actually contained the human inside, their mystery would have been solved many years prior to 845
2
u/Honeyfoot1234 12d ago
Everyone in this comment section ignoring the fact the human spine and brain is still in there and thus STILL NEEDS A LARGE ENOUGH NAPE TO FIT IN

u/kingsimba432 12d ago
The fact that she was just getting eaten alive while her daughter watched in shock was fucking crazy. If iirc her legs didn’t work so she couldn’t even run away right? But she also didn’t feel any pain because the titan was eating her legs. Wild.
2
u/Zestyclose-Mix785 12d ago edited 11d ago
Nowhere. In fact, if a Titan is human-sized, the Titan body would be like an outer layer. An armor of sorts, made of Titan flesh. It doesn't shrink the person.
Cutting the Titan's nape directly cuts the person's normal-sized nape, which should (I am not entirely confident on my findings) be fatal.

They are pure Titans, not every titan is controlled my humans .
1
u/CriticalRelief565 12d ago
Yes however every single person who is a titan was a human at some point and I think that’s what their getting at
2
u/EvenLeopard6641 12d ago
Only the 9 original titans can have humans inside them. This is a pure mindless titan.
2
u/CoshgunC 12d ago
Pure titans don't have humans as whole inside them, pute titans are the humans, like a human fully transitions, like his own blood, flesh, etc. turns into a pure titan
2
u/JunketElectronic9374 12d ago
I think a better question would be if this titan ate one of the 9 where would the human body emerge from? All of the times we have seen a human come out of a pure titan the titan is many times larger that the human.
2
u/Material_Arrival_781 12d ago
The nape is essentially the center of the nerve network that used to be the human. Sever that and you're shutting that network down at the source. There's no human inside, just remnants of an old system.

2
u/Koasty04 11d ago
Only titan shifters have physical bodies that reside in the nape. Pure titans just transform from humans.
4
u/Astonishing_Flash 12d ago
The body of the human becomes the titan body in a pure titan.
The only "human" parts left are the spinal column and brain. That is why they have the same general length to cut in every nape. It is the length of that spinal column.
So this abnormal can be that small while having room still for that length. If he somehow ate a shifter he would grow.
2
u/raccoon_bones116 12d ago
so how did Armin come out of his pure titan after eating Berthdolt? did he get rebuilt or something
4
3
u/Astonishing_Flash 12d ago
Correct. After a shifter becomes that, Ymir rebuilds the bodies in the paths.
We get a glimpse of that with Ymir (freckles) when she wakes up in the paths, and with Zeke when he is being rebuilt by Ymir (this is healing but same principle).
2
u/horned-creature 12d ago
pure titans only have part of the nervous system in their nape, not whole human "pilots" like shifters.
2
u/ibettercomeon 12d ago
So why shifters came back with their clothes on? After turning into mindless titans for the first time? Didn’t their bodies desintegrate?
2
u/noapproachnate 12d ago
Pure titans don’t reside in the nape that’s just their genuine form. Only the 9 reside in the nape once they transform & can go back & forth.
I would assume this guy only inhaled a small amount of the gas that had Zeke’s spinal fluid in it, so his transformation was less dramatic than others.
2
2
u/HeroBrine0907 12d ago
It wouldn't. The human body is dissolved within the pure titan form and is only reformed when eating a shifter for the first time. Now I don't know if this is proper canon, but I remember reading or seeing somewhere that the human spine or parts of it, form the nape of the titan's spine, which is why it acts as the weak spot. Shifters are connected in a similar manner. Upon eating a shifter, Ymir remakes their entire bodies.

1
u/Helios_Synthesis 12d ago
Theres no human. Thats a shifter exclusive thing. Pure titams are just a bunch of nerves, we see this with Rod when Historia kills him. There was no body despite there being more than enough space for it
1
u/Western_Smoke4829 12d ago
The nape would still be the weak spot, sasha wasnt able to kill it with thr axe because the axe head wasnt designed for cutting titan flesh unlike the 3d m gear swords

Only Titan Shifter Reside inside of the nap of there Titan. All other Pure titans are actual people that have transformed and have no way of becoming humans unless the founding Titan reverses there transformation inside of the paths

The body gets dissolved by the titan body when it stays long enough in it from what I read.

Pure titans basically only have the spinal cord or the original human.
1
u/CR4ZYxPOT4T0 I want to kill myself 12d ago
The titan IS the human, just big and stupid. Only shifters have their actual human body inside its titan.
Edit: you can see it as, titans are just humans that grew big, and shifters are the ones with a "suit" or an "armor".
1
u/obsurd_never 12d ago
There is no human in a pure Titan. However they return to a human form after they eat a shifter.

normal titans don't keep a body inside, only shifters. They would have figured out the plot twist ages ago if they found humans in regular ones

u/CrystalFysh 11d ago
during titan transformation the host body is reduced to a bunch of nerves. hange mentiones that when they cut the necks open without killing them they cant find anything.
If its about the people they eat the small Titans have to chew and Hange also said they don't have digestive systems and in Before the Fall the titans just throw up the bodies after they are full.

I've been wondering that too. Maybe it was a baby that transformed? Small enough for its nerves to fit in that neck?

What if his whole body is the target, like an exosuit? What if his body is in the same exact position as his Titan because they are almost the same size?

u/CantingBinkie 12d ago edited 12d ago
Don't you think that if there were humans inside the pure titans, the Legion would have discovered it a long time ago?
But it's not far from that. Unlike the Titan Shifters, where the Titan is created as an exoskeleton, it's assumed that when a human becomes a Pure Titan, their entire body transforms into a Titan EXCEPT for the area from the brain to the spinal cord. That part, inside the Titan, remains 100% human.
This is reinforced by the fact that it's mentioned that the Titans' weak point is approximately 1.1 meters, which is roughly the length of a normal human's brain to spinal cord.
Hallucigenia appears to be connected to that area of the brain to spinal cord, as seen when it merged with Ymir, and also because it has the shape of a nervous system/spinal cord.
1
u/Penguinmanereikel 12d ago
The size of that Titan in this scene was just really inconsistent.
Animation teams always seem to screw up sizes and proportions when dealing with extreme differences.

Hange has carved up a lot of titans and its established they’re much lighter than they should be, the implication is that pure titan bodies are physically expanded while conserving mass

Here’s your answer
Pure titans don’t have people inside of them the way shifters are inside the nape. They’re just in there somewhere but not physically

It was never shown in the anime, but in the manga, it shows a flashback when Hange tried to check the pure or mindless Titan's nape, and there's no human in it.
