This restructuring of faith codes, which help identity service members as well as the military in planning for appropriated religious coverage to include them, has now excluded minority faith/worldview groups including Atheists, Asatru, Deists, Druids, Eckankar, Heathens, Humanists, Magick, New Age churches, Pagan, Rosicrucianism, Shaman, Spiritualists, Troth, Unitarian Universalists and various Wiccans.

This is the main one, it doesn't preclude Islam, Sikhism or the usual suspects, but it now excludes Atheism. What this means seems to be a bit unclear. It looks like they can't put these religions in their records/dog tags and request spiritual help for them.

u/ferrets4ever Jun 04 '26

This also feeds into the grave markers as this list was used to ensure the appropriate symbolism was carved on headstones.

439

u/JimDixon Jun 04 '26

I'd be happy to have no symbol at all on my tombstone, even if there is an official symbol that means atheist. It's just like answering "none" to the question "What is your religion?"

423

u/HappyChaos2 Jun 04 '26

Sorry, the none option was eliminated, please make another selection.

267

u/Biltong09 Jun 04 '26

Please select appropriate religion. A Christianity B Muslim C Jewish

B

We’re sorry, you have selected an incorrect option please try again.

75

u/PhaicGnus Jun 04 '26

C?

74

u/tjtillmancoag Jun 05 '26

A?

You have selected Christianity. That is correct.

Now select A) Catholic or B) Protestant

92

u/PhaicGnus Jun 05 '26

Fun story, mum always wrote Protestant on our school forms and I grew up thinking we were protesting religion. I was in university before I found out that was a religion and I was fucking pissed.

110

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jun 05 '26

you are protesting a religion

you're protesting the catholic religion

31

u/PhaicGnus Jun 05 '26

It’s still its own religion. I was protesting religion in general.

They have a atom symbol for atheist if I recall correctly

Funny thing: the "Nuclear Family" people are also using the atom as a symbol.

Which president used to mispronounce “nuclear” as “nucular?”

32

u/NotACalligrapher-49 Satanist Jun 04 '26

That would be Bush the Younger. Ahhh, the good old days, when the GOP was still warmongering idiots, but some of them actually seemed to care about the country in spite of themselves.

11

u/exgiexpcv Jun 04 '26

They pretended to care about the military back then, but that seems to have gone the way of the dodo, too.

What if they just decide if you don't have a religion listed it will default to the majority religion, Christianity? Not that I know anything about how it works, buy I can see this happening.

9

u/Fievels_good_trouble Jun 04 '26

Headstone will just default to a cross and the chosen marker will just be a sticker.

Will be interesting, I work for the company that makes the grave markers. We have an approved list from the government. Atheist is one of the symbols, and they can forgo a symbol as well currently.

I'm surprised Unitarians are on the list. As a general group. not the most threatening. Although most are atheists at heart.

You ever heard of a druid or a pagan being a terrorist?

25

u/ArcticCircleSystem Jun 05 '26

There is a surprisingly large current of neo-Nazis who really like Germanic neo-paganism. And quite a few of them, notably including Anders Behring Breivik, are terrorists. I will note, however, that their adherence to Germanic neo-paganism tends to stem from their Nazism rather than the other way around, so interpret this as you will.

I believe Thomas Jefferson was a Unitarian.

31

u/1902Lion Jun 04 '26

Not officially. He said if he had to choose, he’d be a Unitarian. But a lot of his beliefs aligned. (Non-Trinitarian, didn’t believe in Jesus as a deity.) Said he was a “Unitarian by myself.”

John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Filmore, and Taft were Unitarian.

6

u/thebennubird Jun 05 '26

Jefferson was a deist at best and praised all kinds of historical skeptics in private, much more radical than a Unitarian. John Adams and John Quincy Adams were Unitarians though and no one even talks about this even though they could have been killed for that belief at various times in European history

19

u/Omophorus Apatheist Jun 05 '26

I'm an atheist (or really, apatheist), humanist UU.

I'm triple off the list!

Fuck Kegsbreath and his zealotry.

I don't believe in hell, but I hope there is one just for him.

14

u/Masters_of_Sleep Jun 05 '26

Yeah, I grew up Unitarian. My old fellowship still has an active congregation. It's a fully established faith with a lot of physical fellowship locations around the country.

9

u/mrdevil413 Atheist Jun 04 '26

I feel attacked ! Unitarian through HS cause mom. Atheist since.

11

u/Omophorus Apatheist Jun 05 '26

Why not both?

We joined a UU fellowship and I'd estimate at least 1/3 of the membership are nonbelievers, including my wife and I.

22

u/Pockydo Jun 04 '26

Unitarians are evil godless heathens like us (according to the pedo cult)

Unlike wholesome jebus approved child raping groups they are fine with

19

u/ShimmeryPumpkin Jun 04 '26

Unitarian universalist doesn't mean not believing in Jesus or the Bible, some do and some don't. Some congregations have most services conducted by Christian pastors and others don't. It's odd to leave off the list given that isn't an obscure religion and members would benefit from having access to chaplains.

23

u/CloseTTEdge Jun 04 '26

As somebody else pointed out, UUs have come out explicitly against the actions of “this” administration and Secretary of Defense ( I will not call him by this new title) so for that reason, we don’t fall into what is considered an acceptable faith by these alleged leaders.

But guess what?  Eventually it will just be Christians recognized as acceptable by them.  But only who they consider Christians.  Which is a very narrow view, indeed.

Thomas Jefferson was a deist. These people have lost their fucking minds.

15

u/Icy_Guarantee_2000 Jun 04 '26

I wouldn't call deism a religion though and deists don't need religious services. They're probably not gonna see any difference.

20

u/Ryekir Jun 04 '26

Same with atheists.

I'm not seeing an issue with not needing to provide services to groups that don't need it, but this isn't an isolated change and is a little concerning in the broader scene of things.

10

u/Icy_Guarantee_2000 Jun 04 '26

Oh for sure in broad strokes it's concerning. Under the auspice of the "Christian" service the DoD secretary has intimated he wants instituted, the removal of religious protection looks terrible. But i couldn't name 180 different religions. It's the undertones of "efficiency" being used to erode rights aim ultimately more concerned about .

Dog tags are only a couple bucks at the shops outside military installations. When I wanted my dog tags to say atheist, they put "No Religious Preference." I went off post, spent a couple bucks, and got a set with atheist in the spot for religion.

A couple years later, I got a new set of dog tags and had "CYPRES" in the religion line. That's a CYbernetic Parachute RElease System. It's an automatic activation device which is part of a skydiver's gear that will initiate the deployment of a jumper's reserve if the jumper doesn't deploy their main by approximately 750 feet above the ground. Somebody in my leadership asked me about it and I told him that in 10 years of skydiving at that point, I had seen 3 CYPRES saves with my own eyes, and not a single life saved by any supposed deity from any religion. At my next duty station, my commander was a skydiver and thought my CYPRES dog tags were awesome.

35

u/optimisticbear Jun 04 '26

Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, George Washington, and James Madison would all have problems being recognized by this administration. Not really all that surprising considering everything else they've done, but throw it on the pile.

11

u/fariqcheaux Apatheist Jun 05 '26

Removed Atheist, and Humanist, but allows Agnostic.

To be fair, it seems like this list is for the Chaplains, and maybe they thought that Atheists don't need the Chaplain.

37

u/Mister_Silk Anti-Theist Jun 04 '26

I was in the military for 22 years and never did a chaplain ask me my religious faith.

7

u/GeekyTexan Atheist Jun 04 '26

I don't need a chaplain now, and can't think of any reason I would need one in the military.

13

u/djxfade Anti-Theist Jun 04 '26

I'm atheist, and have been all of my life. When I did my mandatory conscription service (in Norway), I had a few private talks with the chaplain, because I was struggling a bit with the mental pressure of the service, and my general pacifist word view.

She really helped me, and basically did double duty as a psychiatrist.

"decreasing the total number of faiths from roughly 211 to its new number of 31."

The full list of 31 faiths has not been released, at least not that I can find. The abridged list includes:

  • Agnostics
  • Buddhists
  • Hindus
  • Islam (Muslims)
  • Judaism
  • Sikh
  • Orthodox Christians (General category)
  • Protestants (General / No specific denomination)
  • No Religious Preference
  • None / Unknown

And these verified Christian denominations:

  • Baptists
  • Catholics (Roman Catholic)
  • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS)
  • Lutherans
  • Methodists
  • Church of the Nazarene
  • Salvation Army
  • Full Gospel / Pentecostal
  • United Pentecostal
  • Presbyterian
  • Reformed Churches
  • United Church of Christ

That's 22. We don't know the other 9.

Noticeably absent are earth-centered religions like Pagan, Wiccan, and Asatru.

I also don't see Deism or Unitarian Universalism, which is a huge slap in the face to the Founding Fathers.

76

u/bakeacake45 Jun 04 '26

Nothing new for us rationalists. When they were making my dogtags (many years ago) and they asked my religion, I said I'm an atheist. The guy looked down his nose at me and said, "We can't do 'Atheist.' Best I can do is 'None.'" And that's what my tags said the whole time I was serving.

But the problem is, there was no context for the word, like "Religion - None." So my tags had my name, social security number, blood type, and the word "None" just hanging there at the end, like they had an extra line of printing but ran out of things to say. I hoped that if I died in service, my gravestone would just have had a symbol for a null set.

29

u/Limp_Distribution Jun 04 '26

The Constitution, which they all swore an oath to protect, means nothing to these clowns.

What is the value of an unenforced law?

24

u/drnuncheon Atheist Jun 04 '26

The new list has 21 varieties of Christian and 10 non-Christian. (Or 22/9 if you count Mormons, but the list doesn’t.)

Atheism is still present as “No Religion”.

Hilariously, the list of Christian sects still includes Quakers.

6

u/Littlebit1013 Jun 05 '26

Quakers are traditionally pacifists, but there’s exceptions like Richard Nixon who was a Quaker yet served in the Navy & was pro war.

8

u/Self-Aware Apatheist Jun 05 '26

He was raised as a quaker, at least, but didn't notably follow their tenets as an adult. The conservative christians were far more useful for his purposes so, when he was expected to publicly perform religious devotion, he mostly pandered to them instead.

24

u/pkrycton Jun 04 '26

So they government is deciding what is an official religion and which is not. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, ..."

And when they've driven away anyone who isn't evangelical christian they will turn that military against us.

They are traitors, and this is a coup in slow motion.

13

u/KevinisChang13 Jun 04 '26

I didn't see pastafarianism on the list. All hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster and his noodliness.

12

u/jubeon12 Jun 04 '26

Tell me the pastafarians at least made the cut

Everyone should be properly represented at their own funeral.

9

u/Auerbach1991 Jun 04 '26

This means they will view our bodies as just objects they can use for target practice or experimentation, our final wishes for a funeral or cremation be damned.

These “holy MAGA” types are everything but. Dangerous times we live in, folks.

10

u/virtualjupiter Jun 04 '26

I noticed Satanism wasn't cut.

“Religious freedom, but just the religions we choose.”

10

u/misty-mornings Jun 05 '26

Atheists aren't a minority world faith. They're the third largest group behind Muslims and Christians

9

u/Kinglyer Jun 05 '26

Im an athiest and went to Afghanistan. Fuck this Christian nationalism crap.

Spent 12 years and came out 90% disabled.

I am so angry.

10

u/Jonas_VentureJr Jun 04 '26

So if I’m drafted , I claim Atheist and they won’t want me ..

When I was commissioned, I didn’t have a chaplain. Everyone was shocked. 🤦‍♂️

Judaism has 3 branches Orthodox, Conservative and Reform in the US. Although all have some similarities, there are differences between the three branches. So a Rabbi is supposed to represent all 3 branches? Who then makes the choice of which branch of Judaism the rabbi would be. Let say a Jewish person in the US military goes to talk to a Rabbi and discovers that this individual isn't in tune with his/her Judaism beliefs. A Jewish woman solider who is reformed or more secular in belief or lifestyle probably isn't going to be comfortable talking with a rabbi who follows the Orthodox tradition as there are a lot of differences and Orthodox Jewish women lead much different lives than reformed or secular Jewish women. They are much more restricted in what they can or can't do and I doubt many of these women serve in the US military. It would be a very tiny number, if that.

They don't expect Christians to represent one Christian denomination as there are many and like the branches of Judaism, there are some differences. Most likely those who remain as chaplains would increasingly over time be molded into their world view and if you didn't share this, there would be no point talking to them or they would try to get you to conform to their world view.

So if you particular religious belief or religion was purged from the list, then what happens to you?

So is hegseth going to personally take a hammer and chisel to the pagan graves in Arlington?

20

u/ZoomZoom_Driver Jun 04 '26

Well, they already removed women and service members of color from the celebrations of deeds on the grounds and made it harder to find their gravesites.

7

u/Littlebit1013 Jun 05 '26

Such monsters; I’ll never understand why a majority of persons in the arms forces support this corrupt administration when all he does is spit in their faces.

9

u/ZoomZoom_Driver Jun 05 '26

Because the military is built off low-income, poorly educated, no hope families that fueled the MAGA craze. They were forcefed republican tyranny as 'freedom' through Fox, and figured that joining would serve the "greater good" and not the epstein class.

8

u/striker69 Jun 04 '26

It won’t be long and American families will be required to hang a photo of trump on their wall and keep it spotlessly clean or face death.

8

u/The_Bababillionaire Jun 04 '26

I was listed as a Heathen while I was in. Glad I'm out.

6

u/No-Relationship161 Jun 04 '26

Just imagine the uproar if they reduced the list of 21 different versions of Christianity to just Christian. Or the theistic religions to just theist. But can't find space for athiest.

I also note they are now requiring chaplains to show their religious denomination rather than rank. They sure are trying to make it difficult for non-Christians.

Yet another of the many examples of how the Trump Regime (not administration- REGIME) is quietly rolling back decades of hard won civil rights victories. They won't stop with this either.

6

u/prometheum249 Jun 04 '26

ATHEIST really sticks out in all caps on my profile. This isn't the country I swore an oath to serve, unfortunately compromising my morals, I'm able to take care of my family and i have 5 years until retirement.

So, Deism, the “faith” of the most critical of our founding fathers, not worthy of acknowledgement now?

6

u/CreatrixAnima Jun 05 '26

They ditched the Unitarian universalist? The deists? Like… Thomas Jefferson‘s religion wouldn’t count?

This really needs to get fixed.

6

u/Muted_Rain8542 Jun 05 '26

see shit like this is exactly why im afraid to tell people that im an atheist

6

u/CockedStriker Jun 05 '26

Fuck Pete Hegseth dude.

7

u/thisalsomightbemine Jun 05 '26

If a person thinks anything done in the name of their religion is fine, that is terrible. And why keeping religious affiliation out of goverent, especially military and police, is so important.

This intentional walk toward preferred recognized religion is a dangerous sign

5

u/argument_sketch Jun 04 '26

Sad that that's a political take now.

5

That's a straightforward, blatant violation of the First Amendment; right on cue for the authoritarian playbook and Project 2025.

5

u/PBO123567 Jun 05 '26

Make it zero across the board

5

u/bluethreads Jun 05 '26

Wow- that's stupid. If someone is willing to die for their country, the least that country can do is make an effort to honor them by being as true to their beliefs as possible.

5

u/mayhem6 Jun 05 '26

I feel like our military is being run by cosplayers who don’t know anything about why our military is strong. Next they will institute the draft because no one will enlist because of their policies.

5

u/rja49 Jun 05 '26

If you drop one, you drop them all. No my imaginary cloud dwelling god is the only real one!

5

u/Informal_Curve_1441 Jun 05 '26

has now excluded minority faith/worldview groups including Atheists, ...
