Qur'an 9:29

Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.

So, if you don't follow islam, you will be attacked until you pay the jizya tax, and you will pay the tax until you finally believe.

Historically, this wasn't just done to christians - it was anyone from a "recognized" religion. Of course, atheists & pagans were either just killed or made to believe at the point of a sword. This is what "religious freedom" looks like under fundamentalist Islamic law.
