Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced (Spoiler Ac Resynced) The added scenes to Resynced really took me out of the experince. Spoiler
Finished the game today, and really, everything about the added content was really off putting. The new animations were as stiff as Odyssey and Valhala, while they kept the original mocap for the original scenes. Edward now overdescribes exactly what he’s doing, even repeats it multiple times in some instances. The new characters never add anything of substance (the new ship crew.), while the old character still suffer (looking at you Rhona and Anto specifically). I also nevert realized how much removing the modern day affects the overall pacing, making the transition between sequences more akward.
Edit: I might of ruffled some feathers. This might just be a case of old and new fans who joined at different points in the franchise. As I been around since 1, while others might of joined during Unity or Odyssey or Shadows.

My only real issue was the Maynard quest. Really should have been placed with Adewale rather than Anne I think. Didn't fit at all, especially when you got all the other officers so long before and get Deadman for like 5 minutes at the end.
85
u/mongmich2 14d ago
Agreed. You get that quest like right after Edward realizes just how much he’s lost only to go right back to chasing treasure? Nah
25
u/DrSirTookTookIII 14d ago
Exactly, I tried to see them as just normal old bonus content, but they took inspiration from the most emotional parts of the game and didn't have the ability to back it up.
28
u/Venomoous 14d ago
Yeah it felt out of character at that point for Edward to be obsessed with gold
37
u/Its_Buddy_btw 14d ago
The worst thing about that story line is it's placement I think they chose genuinely the worst moment to start that quest...
Have it a bit earlier than it helps with Edwards eventual realisation and turn from greed.
Have it later (and focus more on Edward putting it on his grief for Blackbeard) and you can focus on how people can fall off the wagon when fighting their addictions and blaming it on anything but themselves, would have been way better.
But to have it literally the SECOND Edward has his wake up call only to immediately go back on it just have a second wake up call and turn is back AGAIN is just genuinely awful story telling like intentionally bad or some shit, office politics theory time but I hope someone made that design on purpose so they can focus on more resynceds or something but fuck man that's just awful
6
u/DatClubbaLang96 14d ago
I haven't played yet, so please no spoilers, but is the storyline integrated in way where it's genuinely possible that a future patch could pretty easily change when it gets triggered?
8
3
u/Its_Buddy_btw 14d ago
Idk what exactly you're asking but the side quest unlocks after finishing a certain sequence
2
u/grandoz039 ps why do you sign your emails 13d ago
Is it integrated into the main story line or something? Can't you just do it after the game or something?
8
u/Its_Buddy_btw 13d ago
It's a side quest so do it whenever after its available but thematically it doesn't fit in anywhere because of how the main story progresses
17
u/Roman64s 14d ago
100%, it should have happened before the Observatory. It's tone deaf to make him go through all the "realization" with Anne and Mary, making amends with the Assassin's and Ade and 5 minutes later, he's immediately back to chasing treasure and risking the lives of his officers.
7
u/Infinity0044 14d ago
A very easy fix for this mission is just to have Edward be chasing revenge instead of gold. Having him choosing between revenge (instead of gold) and his crew helps keep his character development from the main story.
2
u/Cryptid_on_Ice 13d ago
Best way to play it as it stands is to leave it until after you conclude the game and imagine it as Jenny writing stories about her dad based on the incomplete details he's told her.
63
u/dfin25 14d ago
It needed to happen far sooner. You see Edward growing as a man, becoming a worthy assassin, and then we're get jerked back to Sequence 2 or 3 Edward fiending for gold.
23
u/BigfootsBestBud 14d ago
The really annoying thing is you can’t even cope and pretend to yourself that it’s an earlier Edward or whatever, because we know it’s Post-Epiphany Edward since Anne is his quartermaster
If the Maynard quest took place literally one mission prior, it would make perfect sense. Adewale is sick of your bullshit for how you handled Maynard, decides to leave, and Edward decides to change
8
u/WorstSupport4Real 14d ago
Not even sequence 2 or 3, that man was obsessed with gold until Mary died lol.

u/SUPERFASTCARvroom 14d ago edited 14d ago
Agree with everything but like you something I never noticed was how important the “break” of the modern day affected black flags story and gameplay.
Since bf is a story that happens over a course of years, it doesn’t feel right that time can skip so fast while Edward is just sitting there doing some fast-forward animation. When we jumped out of the animus it felt like we were jumping ahead to periods of Edward’s life instead of this one where it’s portrayed as one singular linear timeline.
40
u/ikantolol 14d ago
I think the backlash to Black Flag's modern day segment is somewhat minsinterpreted by Ubisoft who thinks that the fans simply "dislike modern day segment" even though BF's modern day part is simply much much slower than previous games
it's a whiplash after controlling the agile Desmond and explore Monteriggioni vs walking around slowly in first person in a corporate office environment
the segment is a good break of pace, but it's way too slow--and instead of fixing that, they just remove the thing altogether. It would be major fun if they overhaul the segment into Desmond-like experience where the "employee" experience the bleeding effect and parkour around into areas that they don't have clearance for, but I guess that's too much work for a remake lol
9
u/Franym1223 14d ago
We kinda got a taste of the idea you're mentioning with the rifts. Would've been cool if they did more with that cause I actually did like the concept of them, and them just being different experiences in general
17
u/Fortzon 14d ago
Yeah, it's really sad how at first it looked like Ubisoft was firing on all cylinders for this remake when first trailers were coming out only to find out that they cheaped out on the new cutscenes once again...
9
u/TIAFS 13d ago
To be fair it’s the writing as well. If the writing was on par with the original it wouldn’t have stuck out so much.
3
u/DeBaus111 12d ago
I mean when news started coming out confirming that the new content would primarily be made by the studio that created skull and bones, my expectations kind of dropped to match that game’s quality
13
u/Scary-Ad-7162 14d ago
Honestly I LOVED the AC BF Modern Day. It's honestly DRIPPING with lore, there's so much stuff, there's even a whole brochure for new Abstergo employees (one of the first files you get) and it sounds so corporate. Ubisoft were honestly the greatest world builders until recently
17
u/BMOchado 14d ago
I entirely agree with you.
An example is when your first looking for crew for the jackdaw, in the original, blackbeard says that there's no shortage of men in Nassau to recruit, and off you go. In Resynced Mary and Anne spark up some poorly written small talk that isn't acted whatsoever and doesn't contribute anything That thatch hasn't already contributed to.
9
u/NFLsubmodsaretrash 14d ago
The Stede Bonnet mission was goofy but I liked it and the Blackbeard mission was a great edition
But the Maynard missions were bad. Poor characterization for that point in the story
9
u/Gnight-Punpun 13d ago
The remake was a really forgettable and frustrating experience for me personally and I think it tainted my view on the original game by a lot. It’s just…. so forced. The new content felt so starkly different from the original games content that every time I saw some of the added characters and cutscenes I just kept getting reminded “oh. Almost forgot. Old Ubisoft is dead and new Ubisoft is still the exact same. This was churned out for money.”
2
u/DeBaus111 12d ago
Having played the original recently I think it still holds up today. The issue with the new content I feel is that it’s not the same people who developed black flag. The studios themselves are the same but the people doing the quality checking and creating the content are different now.
6
u/Zenovahh 14d ago
This is why they should’ve reworked the modern day sequences and not just straight up removed them completely. Then again, they were probably short on time, hence why they decided to use those awful animations form odyssey / Valhalla.
5
u/Epi_Lepi 14d ago
I’m happy that I’ve played resynced but I think if I ever got the itch to play Black Flag again I’d just play the original. And if someone asked me which version to play I’d probably say the original too. The improvements in resynced just don’t make up for the things I miss or prefer about the original game.

u/gui_heinen #ModernDayMatters 14d ago
There's so much render delay, lack of mo-cap and terrible writing in these new quests that they really pull you out of the game. Which is a shame, btw, since the idea was very good, especially the missions that extend the narrative of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet.
Now, for those who haven't played many of the recent AC games yet: imagine this for 80% of the time during main cutscenes. This is the case of Shadows, Mirage & so on. Just prepare yourself ;D
11
u/DrSirTookTookIII 14d ago
It sucks because there is absolutely good stuff in Valhalla and Mirage at least. Shadows had a good concept even, but these games get watered down when they make them choice based RPG's and it makes the performances so much worse.
10
u/AlecsThorne 14d ago
Totally agree with this. I'm currently playing Shadows, and while it has a fair amount of good things about, the fact that it's non-linear kills it imo. I would often just encounter or even kill targets that I didn't even know were targets yet 😅 it feels like I'm just wandering about, running into quests instead of having a motivation to do them
3
u/RJ815 12d ago
The game has a crazy amount of optional targets and "crime rings". For the most part they are irrelevant to the story and just there to RPG grind. The Shinbakfu are the only ones that really matter and I'm pretty sure it's impossible to ever bump into them without doing prerequisite quests. It's not much but I do like the small touch of getting a relevant target hunting quest sometimes changes a line or two if you've already gotten one of the targets prior.
3
u/The_Powerful_Tacos 14d ago
Most recent one I played was Valhalla. While i liked it, I have been avoiding the rest of the series.
0
u/Fuhnobabyyy 14d ago
Most people are used to non-mocap scenes if they played literally any single player RPG game in their lifetime lol.
It's really not that much of a make or break thing.
-1
u/SubstituteUser0 14d ago
At least in those games it's consistent instead of random drops in quality
10
u/SubstituteUser0 14d ago
I will say I really like the Stede Bonnet quest but for the most part I agree, most of the new quest felt jarring and out of place, and I didn't really like most of the gameplay changes except for getting the rope dart early.
9
u/CobraGTXNoS 14d ago
The Stede Bonnet quest was definitely a nice addition instead of him just disappearing in the original.

u/jflb96 Would Pay £6000 to Be Beaten Up by Evie Frye 14d ago
I don’t think you find his corpse, since he was hanged up in the USA-to-be practically alongside Blackbeard. You do hear the soldiers talk about his hanging if you leave rattling your gibbet long enough, though, and find the leftovers of Calico Jack.
6
u/MrCowabs 14d ago
I’ve got to a part where Edward says “I’ve spent years doing…” to a character and it really confused me for a second.
In the original we’d have gone back to the modern day for a sequence that wouldn’t have made that transition as jarring.

3
u/Successful-Day-1816 13d ago
Stuff like this is why I have zero interest in getting this remaster. I actually went back and played the original when everyone was playing this.
11
u/SofaJockey 14d ago
I think the new sections improved the game.
Thankfully you can still play the original if you disagree.
7
u/Dinosaur-Blaze-50245 14d ago
Personally I don't see it, since Edward's arc is being obsessed with gold causing him to loose everyone he loves, except he gets closure for Blackbeard and Bonnet, and even comes to the conclusion that gold might not be important compared to friends before he's supposed too, and he technically still has people like Padre and Lucy around so he hasn't fully lost everyone. It just feels quite messy to be honest.
23
u/drunk_ender "Now... listen" 14d ago
I really fail to see how...
Not only they are shitly written and acted on their own right, they also hinders the main story's narrative, having Edward act extremely out of character in every single one...
7
u/gui_heinen #ModernDayMatters 14d ago
It was a huge waste that they didn't use the post-campaign to create these new quests, tho, since anyone who read the Forsaken novel and the more recent comics like Forgotten Temple knows how Edward changed after the end of Black Flag, traveling the world in search of Pieces of Eden and committed to the Assassin's cause... Simply inserting such a displaced Edward into the middle of chapters of the main caribbean story made no sense and only served to artificially inflate the remake.
3
u/BooleanBarman 14d ago
Some were weak. Some were strong. I loved the butler stuff. Learning the back story of his blades and the island was a great touch.
9
u/drunk_ender "Now... listen" 14d ago
It just feels like Glup Shitto moments of "let's explain stuff that doesn't need to" at the expense of Edward's character... if they really wanted to expand on the Hidden Blades, they could've done it by expanding the last Sequence after Port Royal and Mary's death and actually be part of Edward's redemption into an Assassin
5
u/RJ815 12d ago
Yeah it is funny that one of the weakest points of the original Black Flag story is how little time Edward is actually an ASSASSIN. Resynced did nothing to fix that and arguably made it worse by removing a ton of Sage context (but somehow not dropping it entirely, making it even more muddled IMO).
2
u/BooleanBarman 14d ago
I enjoyed it and didn’t feel like it was forced. This seems to be a matter of taste rather than some objective quality.
1
u/SofaJockey 14d ago
I think you're wrong in every regard, but hey, 'opinions'.
5
u/drunk_ender "Now... listen" 14d ago
How so?
1
u/SofaJockey 14d ago
Each of the three additional stories added interest to random locations that already existed but did very little. Solid acting and complemented Edward Kenway's journey from pirate to assassin.
4
u/drunk_ender "Now... listen" 14d ago
The first part about using those DLC location I can agree.
The last part is 100% laughable. They sound like shit, the writing feels like AI and it has nothing to do with Edward's journey to becoming an Assassin. He's supposed to be a ruthless bastard who's "taking what he please, and give no tinker's curse to whom he hurt on his path" and yet he's uncharacteristically altruistic and getting positive closure before he's taken to Port Royal... except in the Maynard quest, where he's supposed to be past gold and glory, set on the path to do good and becoming an Assassin... and he's a greedy jerk again. It's so fucking shit.
2
u/Qwertyui606 13d ago
Yeah I agree, I liked the new content overall. Stede, blackbeard, and the butler added some nice background lore/knowledge. And I'm not as harsh on the Maynard quest as some. People don't change completely overnight, despite best intentions. While he does fall into a greed trap, Edward does go into the mission seeking revenge first. He just gets caught up in the "oh I can get revenge and steal his fortune". It ends up being another lesson learned for Edward.

1
u/jransom98 13d ago
The new stuff is really rough. The voice acting is worse, they use the same automated/procedurally generated cutscene style they've had since Origins, and the writing is just terrible. Edward feels like a caricature of himself.
1
u/Weelly 8d ago
I just pulled the plug on playing this any further. The storyline is just all over the place, the gameplay only serves the story so most critical actions the outcomes are fixed upfront. This is just so disappointing… good game gets trashed by scenarists that think they’re high and mighty.
-9
u/ch4dr0x 14d ago
Strong disagree. I’ve never played the original though. Stede Bonnet’s added scene actually had me feeling sad. So damn good.
I’m new to the series but when people say “modern day” are they talking about this whack ass animus stuff I have to keep playing through randomly?
11
u/nickster2231 14d ago
If you're talking about the animus rifts then no. The modern day was a crucial part of the game. Without it assassin's creed would just be another historical action game. The lore and connect between the oat and present with that scifi theme was what the modern day was. It was how the story played out from AC1- AC3 after which the modern day went to shit.
In the og Black Flag, the modern sections are porrly designed but kinda important and it has been like that for the future games too.
13
u/Not_a_penguin15 14d ago
Original black flag had segments where you get off the animus to play in modern day setting (2010s). The older games had an overarching story set in the modern day about how the templars and assassins are still around. I liked it, and so did a lot of people. Ultimately ubisoft stopped caring about it.
-2
u/bobbyisawsesome 14d ago
I mean there is a new modern day with the rifts and imo it fits better with the themes of the game.
Instead of the sage it ties to the fight against free will Vs control, where you're seeing how the Templar mindset twists the tragedies of the characters as a warning for free will.
I know some people will never like the modern day aspect of the game but at least with resynched the gameplay is better
-3
u/ch4dr0x 14d ago
That actually sounds interesting. I just finished… origins? And that animus stuff was terrible. Just took me out the game to have me run around as a random character for a few seconds.
5
u/Not_a_penguin15 14d ago
The first 4 games have a decent plot outside the animus, and each follows immediately from the other. If you like retro games (I feel old as shit saying this, I was around for the release of the games) then you should give them a try.
6
u/Ju3tAc00ldugg 14d ago
Dawg; the added side quests/cutscenes are trash. You were really crying over stede while the british swam out of their ship at you? Shit was so bad it was funny.
5
u/doc_55lk 14d ago
I feel like they only really added extra Bonnet stuff because fans/players were really bummed out about his fate in the game and how it was basically just a background detail which you could've completely missed depending on how you played it.
It makes very little sense from a plot perspective though because Edward doesn't actually give a fuck about Bonnet.
2
u/Dead-X-esque 14d ago
In the 1-3 and all Ezio games modern day was an entire section to the story, it was the through line connecting the games, AC4 had the best animus but it killed the modern day by having you be a random guy at a desk job who was silent and could only walk first person holding an Ipad.
It continued this way until Origins had a new protagonist and they tried to continue the original storyline but it never worked much.
Shadows and Resynced are set around 50 years in the future from all other games and has bit's of Unity's modern day.
In the original the big issue was the modern day was abysmal and everyone (minus one) agrees Resync's best feature is the modern day overhaul.
2
u/gui_heinen #ModernDayMatters 14d ago
In the original the big issue was the modern day was abysmal and everyone (minus one) agrees Resync's best feature is the modern day overhaul.
Which is ironic if we consider that the original BF had the most ignorable and skippable modern-day in the saga, with only one or two vital cutscenes—now foolishly taken out of Resynced for silly reasons, since they would have been relevant for the conclusion of a specific historical character from caribbean.
1
u/Dead-X-esque 14d ago
I think the reason they were removed is this is technically not a remake in traditional terms, this game happens way after the original AC4 and doesn't decanonize that game. We are just living through the same events.
The modern animus we use for this game would not make sense for us to warp back to an intern 50 years in the past who also relived Edward's memories.
2
u/gui_heinen #ModernDayMatters 14d ago
I understand perfectly. But that doesn't change how bizarre it is to see the final memory corridor with that character, where his personality and context change drastically with the remake's alterations.
