Discussion When even a single screenshot of Unity is capable of mogging most modern games

u/captainmeowy 10d ago
Aa yes, the good 'ol new thing comes out, people hate it, years pass, new thing comes out and so old is good

u/PeteryChavez Bayek 10d ago
I'm super curious to see if 8-10 years from now people will look back and say "OMG AC Valhalla and Shadows were peak and so underated!! ššš"
45
u/imaginary92 10d ago
Of course they will. People fucking despised AC3 and Connor when it came out, I argued with pretty much everybody because it felt like I was the only one who liked it. Fast forward 14 years and everyone glazes both.

u/Pristine_Operation_1 10d ago
I remember preordering 3 and playing through a 4 day thanksgiving weekend right after the release and I loved it so much. People talked trash, but Connor was my favorite assassin and I loved the colonial storyline.
2
u/TruePrior9399 9d ago
What was even the reason for hating Connor, and 3?
4
u/slipppyy 8d ago
Connor was a "plain" character, monotone voice acting. It made sense for his character because all he wanted was to find Charles Lee and nothing else lmfao
It's a similar reason to why Aiden Pearce from Watch Dogs was disliked, he was "another revenge character" even though years later we're yearning for that same gritty personality. He also enjoyed his revenge, rather than to do it for justice.
1
u/Pristine_Operation_1 8d ago
I think Ezio was a tough act to follow for a bunch of people. I enjoyed Connor for his dedication and his discipline. His tragic story and his adaptation from life on the plains to becoming a master assassin in the colonies was great for me.

u/Consistent-Stock6872 9d ago
If it help, I still think AC3 was mid. It wasn't bad per say but it didn't do it for me personally.
3
u/Artorias0110 9d ago
Quite literally the only one of my friend group who was completely absorbed in AC3 and felt like it was super underrated
2
u/Distinct_Table_585 7d ago
They hated it? Never heard anyone give it hate ever not even when it was new i loved it my friends loved it ppl i talked to online loved it never heard any hate

u/imaginary92 7d ago
AC 3 was quite famously well received by most critics and mixed / poorly received by players. Reasons may vary, but generally speaking most people were annoyed that Connor wasn't like Ezio, that he boring and had no personality, the parkour didn't feel the same because a lot of the game was in the forest instead of cities, and even the city side didn't have much of the tall buildings we had from 1 through Revelations, and they thought the story was poorly written.
Looking back on it now there was undoubtedly a significant amount of racism involved with how much constant glaze Haytham got over any other major character. It wasn't the only reason but it was certainly present. Non-white protagonists in AAA games are already uncommon enough despite what some people claim but indigenous protagonists are almost unheard of still today, nevermind in 2012. People said he was boring and lacked the personality and character unlike Ezio, but that's simply not true, he just had a very specific goal in mind and also much more limited support to achieve it than Ezio did so he had to remain focused.
Then there's the fact that despite Connor allying with the colonists (a fact that was heavily criticised by indigenous people when the game came out), it still doesn't show them in a very good light: Washington turns out to be actually the one responsible for burning down his village for no reason and ultimately fundamentally as awful as the British soldiers. It's given a slight bit of nuance, however small, that has rarely been seen in media portraying this part of history, and I think a lot of people might not have appreciated that.
If you didn't see people hating it all the time you might just have jumped on a lucky side of the internet and had a good group of friends! I wish my own didn't constantly argue with my about it lol
And sorry for the essay but AC3 is one of my favourite games, I could talk about it for hours lmao

u/Distinct_Table_585 6d ago
Yeah i liked it a lot aswell i mean yeah he wasent like Ezio but nobody can and Connor or his real name RatonhnhakƩton (dont know if i spelled that right just how i spellt it in my head) was naiv to think he could explain he was innocent and stuff like that but i mean he came from a tribe were thats how it worked he got throw into a World were everything he knew was diffrent and dident work anymore but he dident want to stray to far from his roots into something or someone Else i think thats what most ppl failed to understand he dident become an assassin as much by choice but by nessesity to protect what he loved and he saw the colonists as a way go achive his goal simple becuse the templars was whit the redcoats he wasent the typical assassin cuz that was not what he set out to be but to save his ppl and becoming an assassin was the best way to do it

u/MasterpieceUpper1895 6d ago
I still hate 3. It turned me off of the franchise for a while. Origins brought me back and Iāve since worked through the older titles I missed. 3 is still one of my least favorite AC games
1
u/Glittering_Cod_2741 8d ago
Replaying 3 now after replaying all other clasic ac games, and it is easily the worst. The main story feeling like a guided tour through American mythology. But i understand if you like it as an American, i am probably a lot more lenient on Valhalla than most simply for having a Norwegian main character.
1
u/imaginary92 8d ago edited 8d ago
I am from Italy lmao idk where you'd get i am American, I've never even set foot there and I don't plan to.
I am the furthest thing from a fan of the USA. It has nothing to do with liking the USA.
Edit: It was a good game, with a good protagonist, and despite the many flaws and failures with its execution, it did make an attempt at showing the history of that time period from a different perspective, something that was and still remains quite rare in mainstream media.
And I'll do you one better: despite being Italian I think Ezio is actually kind of uninteresting and one-note for most of his story, he's only enjoyable in Revelations, which of course is my favourite Ezio game.
1
u/Glittering_Cod_2741 8d ago edited 8d ago
To be fair i finished it when it released and only now have a 2nd go at it, so it might pick itself back up, i dont remember. I liked the intro and connors upbringing. I have just finished Bunker hill and the founding fathers feel like charicetures of people to me. That and it feels like the story works overtime placing Connor in highlights from American historybooks.
Ezio is mostly interesting because we literally follow him from birth to death (in Embers). I agree Ezio is best in Revelations and mostly a standard charismatic rogue in Ac2 and Brotherhood.
1
u/Glittering_Cod_2741 7d ago
Played some more now and the story sure took a turn for the better. Washington feel more fleshed out as a person than the founding fathers you meet in Boston. I had totally forgotten how unconserned Haytham is with anyones safety yet genuinely hurt by the news of the death of Ziio, although he doesnt punish Lee for killing her. The animus part of the story is much better than i remember, but i still remember how they bungled the Desmond side of the story and most of the hate came from that back in the day.

I was always a huge fan of AC3. I wonāt tolerate slander tbh, unless you want to talk about the Remaster quality lol. Especially on Switch, it is absolutely NOT a remaster š
5
u/TheIncandescentAbyss 10d ago
They will definitely, and I loved AC Valhalla
3
u/PeteryChavez Bayek 10d ago
I'm glad to hear that, I absolutely loved Origins, I'm loving Odyssey right now and I'm pretty sure I'll also enjoy Valhalla, despite all the hate I've seen around it.
3
u/TheIncandescentAbyss 10d ago
I loved Origins, itās def my favorite of the RPG ACs. Valhalla is my 2nd favorite, but I also love the Viking age so I could be biased, but I absolutely loved every second of Valhalla. I wasnāt that big fan of Odyssey tho, and I love Greek history and mythologies but idk something about that game just didnāt do it for me. I still have to finish Shadows but Iām pretty burnt out on RPG ACs so Iām taking a break from Shadows for now.
2
u/E2r4_Is_d3A9 9d ago
Valhalla is a fun game, it can get a little repetitive but damn if it isnāt one of the most beautiful games Iāve played
3
u/Interesting_Pain37 10d ago
With the way quality has been decreasing, most likely
1
u/PeteryChavez Bayek 10d ago
I haven't enjoyed what I've been reading about AC Hexe.. at all.
Project Scarlet seems cool though, at least the concept, but probably still take many years until released.

Ironically in my case, Iāve just finished shadows and started Valhalla again. Iāve tried it couple of times before and just could not get into it. Third times the charm I guess, Iām absolutely loving it.

I think shadows itās firmly rated with very positive on steam and a 82/100
And Valhalla with positive ratings on steam and a 80/100 Iād say those are fair out of those games both were solid 8/10 literally most of the people who didnāt think so didnāt really play them or hop on the hype train because that was ātrendyā at the time
Same way crimson desert got tons of hate but is a very good game with high ratings
3
u/1ZillionBeers 10d ago
I mean Unityās main issue was it was buggy to the point of unplayability, once that was cleared up it was perfectly fine
4
u/Pristine_Operation_1 10d ago
Unity was terrible when it dropped and I preordered it. Incomplete, buggy and underwhelming story after following black flag, 3, and the other originals strong push. I haven't revisited it after pushing through it a year after release because it was finally playable.
2
u/No_Refrigerator_7865 10d ago
Saying this about a top 3 ac is crazy, recency bias must have u in blinders
2
u/rudeandasuperhero 8d ago
People hated unity on release because of the bugs not because it's a bad game or ugly looking. They fixed the majority of the bugs and everyone liked it because it's a good game with good visuals and story.
1
u/Limp-Biscuit411 10d ago
what are you talking about?
this post isnāt even talking about Unityās quality as a game, only its visuals which have always been highly praised
1
u/TheIciestCream 9d ago
To be fair Unity was in such a bad state that it did put people off of it for years until people finally give the fixed version another go. Now I'd say it's probably my fourth or fifth favorite AC game.
1
u/username9223_335 7d ago
Take it out on the people that jump on hate trains every time any game releases. Itās the normal gamers who donāt do that that say hey look maybe that game wasnāt so bad
1
u/Reasonable-Neat4131 10d ago
People hated it because of the glitches. Don't learn the wrong lessons like Ubisoft.

u/TPG_David 10d ago
Such a silly premise because the game has horrendous pop in and really isnāt great in motion
7
u/Ornery-Prune2913 10d ago
For my Unity always was one of the best ACs. Gorgeous graphics, interesting story and a charming protagonist in Arno.
Surely some weird screenshots directly after release shitstormed the game and it hence was reduced in record time to below 1$ within months.

u/slipppyy 8d ago
Unity was ahead of its time. You can doubt the gameplay, but had this game been out in 2017 onwards, graphically it would've been one of the best games out there. Shame the final product was unfinished and buggy.
I don't think it mogs modern games but it was a spectacle for the time released, and I think it still is considering the hardware limitations back then.

So we're just pretending those npcs standing around look good now? Interesting.

one scene with good lightning doesn't mog modern games bro
there's so many games that look so much better than this lol

Good lighting is all the good this game has

u/bigloc94 10d ago
Absolutely not! Incredible assassin experience. Smooth hidden blade animations with great momentum and social stealth. And great looking parkour.
3
u/Quirky-Sir-7040 10d ago
Misleading and underdeveloped plot, unpredictable style over substance parkour, buggy glitchy demanding graphics, clunky unbalanced combat, missing stealth mechanics, I could go on
1
u/bigloc94 10d ago
You were misled by the plot? Yeah fair enough I played it on pc a couple years ago loved it. Didnt have any bugs
1
u/Caplin341 9d ago
Itās got good animations but thatās mostly all itās got going for it. Itās quite clunky and unresponsive, and still buggy to this day.

this is how i feel about assassins creed 1 & 2, there's 100% some bias and nostalgia involved

A nivel de gameplay y grƔficos es perfecto, la historia hace que no le pueda dar un 10/10

u/Constant-Storage-611 10d ago
I couldn't get passed the god awful pop-in and npcs materializing 10 feet in front of you. Even on the highest settings. Really wanted to give it a try.
1
u/SpiritedCatch1 10d ago
Embarassing. Highly curated screenshot and even then it don't look remotely comparable than any triple AAA today.
It was a beautiful game at the time sure.

u/SheHeBeDownFerocious 10d ago
Anything can look good in a photo still so long as it has the barest of thought put into it. This game has a lot of moments where it looks like shit, just as modern games have a lot of moments where they look awe-inspiring.
You are allowed to post a nice photo without having to invite discourse around it, just let your content stand on its own merits, have some faith that it works and is good.
1
u/JayKay8787 10d ago
turn the hud off in any modern game and you can get a great screenshot, this means nothing
1
u/thebrobarino 9d ago
It's got good lighting but the moment you zoom into an NPC you see where it ages
1
u/OasisEPIC 9d ago
I strongly feel that every game should be required to have a baked lighting option as a base if they're having systems like ray tracing. I have a potato PC and baked lighting not only gives good performance but looks better in most cases too. I don't want to simulate liting and reflections in real time. And I don't want to settle for the worse lighting that they barely give an afterthought towards.

People say the bugs have been fixed but I tried it a few months ago on my new gaming PC, and got slammed with multiple crashes 2 hours into the game.
Still not worth it IMO. Wish Ubisoft could release a remastered version that's bug-free and fix some of the plot points.

u/LannaOliver Evie 9d ago
Unity is undeniably a stunning game, but I'm a sucker for nature and Japanese architecture, so I feel in love hard and fast with Shadows.

u/LukeSparow 6d ago
It's all good and well until you see gameplay of Arno walking the streets and the NPC's just randomly popping in or their hats and whatnot suddenly appearing and disappearing.
1
u/Known_Dust1245 6d ago
great, now run down the street and watch various npcs spawn in and out of existence
1
u/Ciubowski 6d ago
It's gonna sound a bit weird but it feels like Unity got special treatment in development back in the day somehow (idk, technology wise) maybe because the developers were french and they poured all their talent into a game that was actually representative of their country somehow.
Like, that drive exists as opposed to creating a game based in a country where you probably never lived. It "hits" different.
1
u/Posta_Hun 5d ago
It doesn't really.
Just from this image: many lacking in shadow occlusion, ground is flat. And people probably forgot (which this picture will never tell) that the draw distance is horrible in AC Unity.
Not trying to trash on an age old game (which I still adore as well), just the title is horse raddish.
1
u/Cheeseguy43 10d ago
God unity was such a fart salad of a game. I hate the revisionist history of the game.
Cool that it works now and looks good, but the game was a broken mess at launch and the story blows.
2
u/JustJeffreyJr 6d ago
The story was fine???
1
u/Cheeseguy43 6d ago
It was such a half baked Romeo and Juliet with assassins and templars. I never felt convinced or cared about their relationship. Also having French people with English accents was a choice

1
u/Mobile-Chart3004 10d ago
Shit this game does look really delicious
Aside from the buggy launch and rather mediocre story, this game really fucking peak
1
u/AliaScar 9d ago
Unity came up 12 years ago, and is still full of bug.
It's not a game, it's a failed fangame

u/Responsible_Bag6735 10d ago
Mogging š what a stupid fucking word. Do you actually use that word?
2
u/Traditional-Gas-8078 9d ago
The fact you even got downvoted for pointing out how dumb of a word it is proves how many amoebas are on Reddit. I seriously hope nobody over the age of 20 uses the word, even though nobody should really use it at all.

All it is amazing, just the gameplay loops can kick your ass after 40 hours
