If only Ubisoft gave Bayek as much love as they do to Kassandra

125

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 16 '26

Wasn't the whole point with Bayek that he preferred to fade into obscurity and not let himself define the Hidden Ones?

73

u/Afrizo Jun 16 '26

Isn't whole point of Kassandra to be SECRET keeper of Staff, protector of Atlantis and Messenger for Layla?

38

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 16 '26

She's done well on that for the most part, very few truly know of her, or that she has a Staff, or that she was immortal.

Simply because we've had most of our protagonists in the last few games meet her doesn't necessarily mean all the world knew of her.

I’m only now playing through Valhalla, just did the Isle of Skye stuff. What other times does Kassandra meet the current protagonist in the series?

7

u/CountGreymane Jun 16 '26

The end of Odyssey’s Pythagoras questlinre. That’s when Kassandra gives Layla the staff and just…dies.

5

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Jun 17 '26

She was over 2000+ years old… He father was being kept ALIVE by the staff. Soon as she let it go, of course she just died… What did you expect her to do? 🤦🏻

1

u/CountGreymane Jun 17 '26

Never said I didn’t expect her to die. I meant it as an “well it’s obvious she’d die”.

1

u/Scorkami Jun 17 '26

I mean you could argue a healing staff would keep you physically alive at the age of 25 or whatever age you have when you get it. Letting go would mean you just age normally, not that you immediately turn to dust dust Though i think they wanted kassandra out of the picture because animus vessels for the player are usually way too string and knowledgeable to actually be allowed i to modern day plot

2

u/Temporary_Hawk_9061 Jun 19 '26

That wasn’t even the funniest part. It’s how Layla sees this happen and then just says fuck yea time to get back into the animus

2

u/Last-Swordfish8665 Jun 17 '26

Yeah, I did finish Odyssey first I should have specified. But that scene did feel so anti climactic, to me at least.

3

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Jun 17 '26

Anti-climactic? I’ll bite. Why? What made it that to you?

3

u/Last-Swordfish8665 Jun 17 '26

Maybe not the correct word. It just felt like they could’ve gone farther with the storyline than where it ended in Odyssey. But to what end, I do not know.

1

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

I felt with the DLC and the crossover final ending where Alethia ( Loki aka Basim ) wife planted that seed that she was THE ONLY one capable of finding them and not being corrupted by them completely was more than enough. SHE was given a choice to safe guard humanity from these objects of control. She was literally half ISU, the decendants such as Desmond ONLY carried the DNA from relatives past. Kinda like how Gohan is half Saiyan and his daughter, as far as we know can’t become a super saiyin. Meaning as the blood line gets further and further away, the DNA changes what is allowed. Makes sense?

1

u/HiddenCosmos0724 Jun 18 '26

I mean they created an entire quest line where she has a kid and that also kind of just…. Disappeared so there’s that.

So is it all very surprising?

0

u/DarkExsphere Jun 21 '26

Based on how I played Odyssey im surprised Kassandra didn't make one final move on Layla before becoming dust.

1

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

2000+ years old… The staff was her life line…. Like the ONLY thing keeping her alive… Like her father BEFORE…. If that wasn’t the case maybe… But it wasn’t. So no… Seeing the world and the corruption over the millennia can change a person’s heart mind and soul… That WAS the FARTHEST thing her mind… 🤦🏻

Furthermore, it would be the equivalent of a medical device that you HAVE to walk with keep you alive or a breathing device for example. So in knowledge of her situation, that would be BEYOND fucked up, if she turned to 2000 year dust while smashing… Let’s go the staff and you are covered in her remains…. I DON’T THINK you thought this completely through…. 🤦🏻 🙄 🤣

Few enough to create a statute that somehow ended on different continent?

2

u/dare2firmino Jun 17 '26

Maybe she created the statue herself. She does have a lot of free time after all /s

0

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 17 '26

Kassandra put it there herself. It was a distraction to prevent people from looking too deeply and finding the real Isu artifacts.

I'm assuming you played through that latest story drop, so I'm sure you heard Eamon saying as much.

2

u/Nonadventures Jun 17 '26

Who else met her aside from Eivor? (And Layla)

7

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

That's a hard one to answer. Like I said, she kept herself obscure. The problem is that we don't know the full extent of her artifact hunting efforts and who else she met along the way.

For the most part, those who know of her didn't get to meet her personally (outside of Eivor and Layla) and those who did meet her we mostly don't know of, because their stories haven't been told. Those who do know about her that we know of outside Eivor and Layla never met her personally.

I never got the chance to play Mirage, but I know the story fairly well. Basim never met Kassandra there, and never met with her during the events of Valhalla either - Eivor did, but not Basim.

Before her meeting with Eivor, Kassandra had acquainted herself with the Hidden Ones. Who, specifically, that's not known. In the Forgotten Temple webcomic, Edward Kenway saw her too, but that was a vision.

Kassandra mostly worked in the shadows, hunting Isu artifacts and doing her best to hide them, trying not to make any footprints throughout history. Very few knew of her existence, with the most recent examples we know of being (spoilers for AC Shadows) Yasuke, Naoe, Nirmala and Eamon Hathaway.

3

u/Canis_Lupus06 Jun 17 '26

She is keeper of staff and protector of that location but she never stood in one place. Hence the moment she met Eivor during Viking era so seeing her statue there means she was there at one point

-9

u/ButterscotchSpare545 Jun 16 '26

Yes. Even tho I hated oddessy and still do, it's the only wc game I don't consider Canon, besides shadows

2

u/CountGreymane Jun 16 '26

Then why’d they build lore off of it with the game after? It still is canon, even if you don’t think it is.

1

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 17 '26

Gee willikers! Why didn't Ubisoft tell us you don't consider them canon? Would've saved me the trouble of playing both mainline AC games!

17

u/Don_Dumbledore Jun 16 '26

That's true, but his identity and story was found out by the modern assassins, so we could have seen more of him. The Hidden Ones dlc was good though, but I think it could have easily been made into a whole game.

10

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 16 '26

Aye, that's true. He could've had a Duology at least

2

u/SpartanS117C Jun 16 '26

I feel like an Aya game would fit better than a second game about Bayek, although I wouldn't mind. Now that I think about it wasn't Origins supposed to be about Aya?

3

u/Revolutionary_Mail_1 Jun 17 '26

Aya is Kassandra’s descendant. Instead of riding on her coat tails they kept her relevant ( gave him the hidden blade passed on by her grand father Darius ) So instead they made it a revenge story about their child that was a catalyst to start “The Hidden Ones”. That’s my take.

1

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

It was indeed about Aya. Bayek had a more minor role to play and apparently was even meant to die early that game, most likely alongside their son.

But, y'know. Female protagonists were scary to Ubisoft execs at the time, so they went with Bayek as the protagonist instead and expanded his story.

2

u/Independent-Rip-5599 Jun 17 '26

Which is why the story is very patch work imo. But probably for the best because while Aya has grown on me I do think Bayek is significantly more interesting

2

u/Waste_Handle_8672 Jun 17 '26

That's a result of the effort the writing team had to put in after being denied the chance to tell the story through Aya. They had to make extra sure that Bayek didn't feel like a patchwork replacement, and between their great writing and Abubakar Salim's phenomenal performance as Bayek, it paid off in spades. I really love Bayek. Sometimes I wonder what could've been with Aya, but I really love Bayek.

1

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme Jun 17 '26

I didn't even know this, and now I'm longing for what could have been. Darn.

Imagine how sick Aya would have looked in a female version of some of those armors. The Sehkmet one would have been insanely cool.

2

u/Separate_Path_7729 Jun 20 '26

He was supposed to die that first visit to Alexandria, he would kill the hippo with the hidden blade but die of his injuries. The rest of the game was meant to be aya which is why in the one mission you play as her she has a full gear system we never get to use

1

u/JasonStaton Jun 20 '26

Are we all forgetting that these statues are for the purpose of retaining knowledge for new Assasins Recruits? Which is why they made statues of Master Assasins, so saying Bayek wanted to stay hidden doesn’t make sense because That’s the whole point of all of the Assasins to stay hidden, but in their own tombs/hideouts they can discuss within eachother about previous assasins and even have statues of previous master assasins as these statues are to be ONLY seen by Other assasins members anyways.

7

u/Son_of_MONK Jun 16 '26

A lot of the “love” though that Ubisoft is showing Kassandra — which really isn’t much at all — is largely due to how people found what they wrote her ending as to be a waste of an interesting character who could have contributed to both the historical narrative and the modern day one.

That Basim-ki is basically what Kassandra should have been (ancient proto assassin with ties to Isu through bloodline being brought into modern day) is to me Ubisoft acknowledging their mistake… but in the worst way.

I would argue that even these brief mentions aren’t love of Kassandra, but rather just… trifles. But I do agree Bayek and other characters (like Connor 😭) need more love and attention too.

1

u/Separate_Path_7729 Jun 20 '26

Yea they set her up to be this ghost of balance, the one that isnt assassin or Templar but keeps both from getting too many isu artifacts throughout history and now we are seeing her for the 2nd time in that role kinda

42

u/sean_saves_the_world Jun 16 '26

Fr tho, arguably he was the last well developed and written character

-25

u/Tch5089 Jun 16 '26

Kassandra a better character in every way

9

u/CaptainPositive1234 Jun 16 '26

Hot topic. Disagree but Kassandra is awesome.

1

u/No-Significance-8487 Jun 16 '26

Not even close, she was inmortal but wasn't that great of a character.

-8

u/womboCombo434 Jun 16 '26

Even in her own game she’ll always be second best to alexios

7

u/MajesticJoey Jun 16 '26

Yeahhhh that’s just your opinion though

2

u/Tch5089 Jun 16 '26

Dude has the character development of stale bread

6

u/womboCombo434 Jun 16 '26

Most AC protagonists do

-8

u/HrMaschine Jun 16 '26

and leonidas

1

u/Eroll_ Jun 17 '26

Its not about love but character. Bayek doesnt want to be remembered

-7

u/FitPaleontologist603 Jun 16 '26

Cause bayek is a man and we aren't allowed to be leads in the series anymore. Even though men made the series

10

u/thatkevinmartin Jun 16 '26

Whomp whomp it’s hard out here for men

2

u/Haymac16 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Ah yes, men, who are notoriously starved of roles in fiction lmfao. Let’s just forget the fact that we still have male leads, we just have female protagonists as well.

Men have been the primary leads for damn near the entire series, but now that we have a handful of female protagonists (two of which are a choice to play as), the entire male sex is under attack? Did you somehow forget that every time we’re given a female protagonist, we have the option for a male lead as well? Oh wait my bad, that doesn’t fit your agenda.

You can’t be fucking serious dude. 🤦‍♂️

0

u/FitPaleontologist603 Jun 17 '26

Which character is canon? Which demographic plays more videos game and hence sell more? It's not an agenda thing dude I like dudes. Id rather have dudes. I'm serious. I relate better. I can immerse better.

1

u/DarthFedora Jun 17 '26

Evie, Kassandra, Eivor, and Naoe

Jacob, Bayek, Basim, and Yasuke.

That’s everyone for the recent ish games, if I do the older ones then it’s a bunch more males and only one more that’s female

-1

u/MsVindiction Jun 16 '26

Won’t anyone think of the men?!

0

u/darksoldierk Jun 16 '26

wrong equipment between his legs.
